Five cases of nosocomial meningitis are described that occurred within 5 years in a national cancer center in neutropenic cancer patients after cytotoxic chemotherapy: one caused by the yeast Aureobasidium mansoni and four caused by bacteria (two by Enterococcus faecalis and one by Salmonella enteritis and Arcanobacterium haemolyticus. Despite the severe symptoms, all cases were cured with appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Five hundred and fifty six dematiaceous hyphomycetes, the great majority referred from other laboratories, were identified by us over a five year period. Infections caused by the black yeasts (leveduras pretas) are reviewed with respect to their clinical manifestations, classification under the umbrella term, phaeohyphomycosis, and differentiation from chromoblastomycosis. Data on the prevalence of black yeasts submitted to a national reference diagnostic center are provided. Cases of phaeohyphomycosis caused by Aureobasidium pullulans, Exophiala jeanselmei, E. moniliae, E. spinifera, Phaeoannelomyces werneckii, Phaeosclera dematioides, Sarcinomyces phaeomuriformis, and Wangiella dermatitidis are described.

Within last 25 years we have observed 20 cases of fungal meningitis and/or cerebral abscesses. Commonest etiologic agens was Candida spp. (C. albicans 9 of 20). Molds were responsible for 4 cases of brain abscess. Mortality was 50% what seems to be very high. Extremely high mortality is caused by delayed onset of therapy, severe underlying disease and multiresistant fungal organisms such as Mucorales, Fusarium solani and Aureobasidium.

In winter, condensation often causes fungal contamination on glazing beads inside the lower frames of windows. In this study, live and dead fungi present on 12 windows were examined during different seasons. Cladosporium halotolerans was predominantly detected, followed by Aureobasidium pullulans, both of which are common dark fungi. The total fungal including both live and dead fungi was quantified by real-time PCR. A significant correlation was noted between the counts of live and total fungi on different beads. Phaeohyphomycosis comprises a spectrum of mycotic infectious diseases caused by heterogeneous group of phaeoid fungi. A subcutaneous cystic swelling with histological hallmark of pigmented hyphae in tissues accompanied by pyogenic granuloma is diagnostic of phaeohyphomycosis. We present two cases of phaeohyphomycosis in 65- and 55-year-old male agriculturalists, who presented with multiple, cystic soft-tissue masses involving extremities. Culture was done in one case and the specific organism was identified as Aureobasidium pullulans.

Snakes may harbor clinically relevant yeasts, yet the culturable yeast mycobiota of temperate snake species remains poorly characterized. In the present study, siderophore produced by the marine yeast Aureobasidium pullulans was characterized as hydroxamate by chemical and bioassays. The hydroxamate assignment was supported by the appearance of peaks at 1,647.21-1,625.99 cm(-1) and at 1,435.04 cm(-1) in the infrared spectrum. Childhood hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is often associated with exposure to antigens in the home environment. We describe a case of HP associated with indoor hydroponics in a 14-year-old girl. Infectious keratitis is a leading cause of corneal blindness worldwide with little information known about causative etiologies in Malawi, Africa. This area is resource-limited with ophthalmologist and microbiology services. The Department of Ophthalmology at the Kamuzu College of Health Sciences in Blantyre, Malawi, is a participating site of an international corneal ulcer consortium, capriCORN (Comprehensive Analysis of Pathogens, Resistomes, and Inflammatory-markers in the CORNea).
