Automated acute pain prediction in domestic goats using deep learning-based models on video-recordings.

Facial expressions are essential in animal communication, and facial expression-based pain scales have been developed for different species. Automated pain recognition offers a valid alternative to manual annotation with growing evidence across species. This study applied machine learning (ML) methods, using a pre-trained VGG-16 base and a Support Vector Machine classifier to automate pain recognition in caprine patients in hospital settings, evaluating different frame extraction rates and validation techniques. The study included goats of different breed, age, sex, and varying medical conditi

Automated craniofacial landmarks detection on 3D image using geometry characteristics information.

BACKGROUND: Indirect anthropometry (IA) is one of the craniofacial anthropometry methods to perform the measurements on the digital facial images. In order to get the linear measurements, a few definable points on the structures of individual facial images have to be plotted as landmark points. Currently, most anthropometric studies use landmark points that are manually plotted on a 3D facial image by the examiner. This method is time-consuming and leads to human biases, which will vary from intra-examiners to inter-examiners when involving large data sets. Biased judgment also leads to a wide

The impact of analgesic on EMG and other biosignals in a postoperative setting.

BACKGROUND: In the clinical context, the assessment of pain in patients with inadequate communication skills is standardly performed externally by trained medical staff. Automated pain recognition (APR) could make a significant contribution here. Hereby, pain responses are captured using mainly video cams and biosignal sensors. Primary, the automated monitoring of pain during the onset of analgesic sedation has the highest relevance in intensive care medicine. In this context, facial electromyography (EMG) represents an alternative to recording facial expressions via video in terms of data sec

Facial analysis technology for the detection of Down syndrome in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Down syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal anomalies affecting the world's population, with an estimated frequency of 1 in 700 live births. Despite its relatively high prevalence, diagnostic rates based on clinical features have remained under 70% for most of the developed world and even lower in countries with limited resources. While genetic and cytogenetic confirmation greatly increases the diagnostic rate, such resources are often non-existent in many low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. To address the needs of countries with limited resources, the

Fabrication of 3D Models for Microtia Reconstruction Using Smartphone-Based Technology.

OBJECTIVE: Microtia reconstruction is technically challenging due to the intricate contours of the ear. It is common practice to use a two-dimensional tracing of the patient's normal ear as a template for the reconstruction of the affected side. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) surface scanning and printing have expanded the ability to create surgical models preoperatively. This study aims to describe a simple and affordable process to fabricate patient-specific 3D ear models for use in the operating room. STUDY DESIGN: Applied basic research on a novel 3D optical scanning and fabric

The point-of-care use of a facial phenotyping tool in the genetics clinic: Enhancing diagnosis and education with machine learning.

Computer-assisted pattern recognition platforms, such as Face2Gene® (F2G), can facilitate the diagnosis of children with rare genetic syndromes by comparing a patient's features to known genetic diagnoses. Our work designed, implemented, and evaluated an innovative model of care in clinical genetics in a heterogeneous and multicultural patient population that utilized this facial phenotyping software at the point-of-care. We assessed the performance of F2G by comparing the suggested diagnoses to the patient's confirmed molecular diagnosis. Providers' overall experiences with the technology and

Automated video-based facial expression analysis of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Deficits in emotional expression are prominent in several neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Available clinical facial expression evaluations provide subjective and qualitative measurements, which are based on static 2D images that do not capture the temporal dynamics and subtleties of expression changes. Therefore, there is a need for automated, objective and quantitative measurements of facial expressions captured using videos. This paper presents a computational framework that creates probabilistic expression profiles for video data and can potentially help to automaticall

Processing Real-Life Recordings of Facial Expressions of Polish Sign Language Using Action Units.

Automatic translation between the national language and sign language is a complex process similar to translation between two different foreign languages. A very important aspect is the precision of not only manual gestures but also facial expressions, which are extremely important in the overall context of a sentence. In this article, we present the problem of including facial expressions in the automation of Polish-to-Polish Sign Language (PJM) translation-this is part of an ongoing project related to a comprehensive solution allowing for the animation of manual gestures, body movements and

Frequency study of facial electromyography signals with respect to emotion recognition.

Emotional intelligence is one of the key research areas in human-computer interaction. This paper reports the development of an emotion recognition system using facial electromyogram (EMG) signals focusing the ambiguity on the frequency ranges used by different research works. The six emotional states (happiness, sadness, fear, surprise, disgust, and neutral) were elicited in 60 subjects using audio visual stimuli. Statistical features were extracted from the signals at high, medium, low, and very low frequency levels. They were then classified using four classifiers - naïve Bayes, regression

BACKGROUND: Facial erythema is a common but morbid condition caused by several inflammatory disorders. Since most of the current severity indexes lack objectivity and global assessment, the computer-aided image analysis (CAIA) has been suggested. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to compare the validity and efficacy of novel CAIA erythema index - erythema dose (ED) with two other CAIA indexes. METHODS: For mild, moderated and severe erytherotelangiectatic rosacea patients, their photographs of right cheek were assessed with red-blue difference index in image (RBI), a*, and ED. For each

Microstate Analyses to Study face Processing in Healthy Individuals and Psychiatric Disorders: A Review of ERP Findings.

Microstates represent brief periods of quasi-stable electroencephalography (EEG) scalp topography, offering insights into dynamic fluctuations in event-related potential (ERP) topographies. Despite this, there is a lack of a comprehensive systematic overview of microstate findings concerning cognitive face processing. This review aims to summarize ERP findings on face processing using microstate analyses and assess their effectiveness in characterizing face-related neural representations. A literature search was conducted for microstate ERP studies involving healthy individuals and psychiatric

Projected gradients for subclass discriminant nonnegative subspace learning.

Current discriminant nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) methods either do not guarantee convergence to a stationary limit point or assume a compact data distribution inside classes, thus ignoring intra class variance in extracting discriminant data samples representations. To address both limitations, we regard that data inside each class has a multimodal distribution, forming various subclasses and perform optimization using a projected gradients framework to ensure limit point stationarity. The proposed method combines appropriate clustering-based discriminant criteria in the NMF decompo

Computer-based facial recognition as an assisting diagnostic tool to identify children with Noonan syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Noonan syndrome (NS) is a rare genetic disease, and patients who suffer from it exhibit a facial morphology that is characterized by a high forehead, hypertelorism, ptosis, inner epicanthal folds, down-slanting palpebral fissures, a highly arched palate, a round nasal tip, and posteriorly rotated ears. Facial analysis technology has recently been applied to identify many genetic syndromes (GSs). However, few studies have investigated the identification of NS based on the facial features of the subjects. OBJECTIVES: This study develops advanced models to enhance the accuracy of dia

An automated approach to enhance the thermographic evaluation on orofacial regions in lateral facial thermograms.

Segmentation of characteristic facial regions has often been an initial step of thermographic analysis in face recognition and clinical diagnosis. Moreover, fast and accurate thermographic analysis on characteristic areas is highly reliant on segmentation approach. Usually, frontal and lateral projections are used to capture the facial thermograms. The significant role of lateral facial thermography to diagnose the various problems associated with orofacial regions has been remarkable in many studies. So far, no study has presented an automatic approach for the segmentation of characteristic a

Facial Expression Metrics as Digital Biomarkers of Neurologic Disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Facial movements can be key indicators of neurological health and emotional state, offering insights into motor and neuropsychiatric functions that are disrupted in neurologic disorders. Neurological disease can present with characteristic differences in facial movements, like the masked facies of parkinsonism. Automated digital facial expression recognition could assist in asynchronous, remote and objective diagnostic processes. We hypothesized that facial movements relating to smiling, frowning, and blinking could be extracted from brief video-taped encounters in a
