The distribution of visceral primary afferents from the pelvic nerve to Lissauer's tract and the spinal gray matter and its relationship to the sacral parasympathetic nucleus.

The central distribution of visceral primary afferent fibers from the pelvic nerve of the cast and the relationship of these fibers to preganglionic neurons of the sacral parasympathetic neurons (SPN) have been studied. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) applied to the cut pelvic nerve was detected ipsilaterally in preganglionic neurons and dorsal root ganglion cells (segments S1-S3), and in central afferent projections to Lissauer's tract (LT), the dorsal columns, the dorsolateral funiculus, and spinal gray matter. The afferent projections were strongest in the region of the SPN (S1-S3) but extende

A shape-adjusted ellipse approach corrects for varied axonal dispersion angles and myelination in primate nerve roots.

Segmentation of axons in light and electron micrographs allows for quantitative high-resolution analysis of nervous tissues, but varied axonal dispersion angles result in over-estimates of fiber sizes. To overcome this technical challenge, we developed a novel shape-adjusted ellipse (SAE) determination of axonal size and myelination as an all-inclusive and non-biased tool to correct for oblique nerve fiber presentations. Our new resource was validated by light and electron microscopy against traditional methods of determining nerve fiber size and myelination in rhesus macaques as a model syste

Nerve stimulation in vivo acutely increases tyrosine hydroxylase activity in the superior cervical ganglion and its end organs.

Previous studies have shown that preganglionic nerve stimulation in vitro increases acutely the activity of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme in catecholamine biosynthesis, in sympathetic neuronal cell bodies in the rat superior cervical ganglion (SCG). In the present study, we have examined whether a similar increase occurs after nerve stimulation in vivo, and whether this enzyme activity also increases in sympathetic nerve terminals in autonomic end organs. Immediately following stimulation at 10 Hz for 15 min in vivo, TH activity was found to have increased 4- to 8-fold in

Parasympathetic schwannoma of the submandibular gland.

Schwannomas of the submandibular gland have only been documented sporadically throughout the medical literature. We describe a case of schwannoma of the submandibular gland originating from the submandibular branch of the lingual nerve, which carries the preganglionic parasympathetic nerve fibers. The clinical aspect of this tumor is discussed, followed by a brief literature review.

Sympathetic neural outflow directly recorded in patients with primary autonomic failure: clinical observations, microneurography, and histopathology.

We evaluated 2 patients with primary autonomic failure, without clinical peripheral neuropathy. One had primary autonomic failure alone (PAF), and the other had autonomic failure and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Direct intraneural recordings demonstrated a marked reduction of sympathetic efferent nerve impulse activity in the PAF patient. The patient with MSA had spontaneous bursts of sympathetic nerve impulses that confirmed the functional integrity of post-ganglionic sympathetic efferent neurons. Neurosecretory activity of these neurons correlated with the electrophysiologic findings. The

Spinal and cranial motor nerve roots in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and X-linked recessive bulbospinal muscular atrophy: morphometric and teased-fiber study.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and adult onset X-linked recessive bulbospinal muscular atrophy (SPMA), constituting the category of adult onset form of motor neuron disease, were analyzed on motor nerve roots. The results of morphometric analysis on ventral spinal roots (VSR) of all spinal segments from ALS and SPMA revealed the following three findings: (1) the large-myelinated alpha-motoneuron fibers were markedly decreased in number throughout all segments; (2) thin-myelinated autonomic preganglionic fibers were almost completely preserved; (3) small-intermediate-myelinated fibers whic

Specific targeting of ganglion cell sprouts provides an additional mechanism for restoring peripheral motor circuits in pelvic ganglia after spinal nerve damage.

The pelvic ganglia contain both sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons and provide an interesting model in which to study the effects of a distributed spinal nerve lesion. Previous animal studies have suggested that after either lumbar or sacral nerve injury, some functional connections are restored between preganglionic and postganglionic neurons. It has been proposed that this is because of intact preganglionic axons sprouting collaterals to supply denervated ganglion cells. However, this has never been demonstrated, and our study has investigated whether the ganglion cells themselves contr

Neurophysiologic changes after preganglionic and postganglionic nerve-root constriction: an experimental study in the rat.

STUDY DESIGN: We investigated changes in spinal somatosensory-evoked potential (SSEP) and nerve action potential (NAP), correlated behavior, and associated pathologic observation in experimental radiculopathy. OBJECTIVES: To create a rat model of sacrococcygeal radiculopathy for determining the validity of SSEP and NAP. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: We examined the diagnostic sensitivity and value of electrophysiologic tests for evaluating lumbosacral root disease conflict. An appropriate animal model can help verify the value of these tests. METHODS: Preganglionic lesion group rats were give

Interaction between picrotoxin and 5-hydroxytryptamine in the superior cervical ganglion of the cat.

1. Electrophysiological techniques were utilized to study the actions of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and picrotoxin on the superior cervical ganglion of the cat.2. The intra-arterial administration of 5-HT to the ganglion elicited both depressant and excitatory actions. In low doses (0.01-0.5 mug) the amine produced a depression of ganglionic transmission. In larger doses (2-50 mug) it produced an excitation of ganglion cells (early discharge) and an initial enhancement of transmission, which was followed by depression. Picrotoxin (25-500 mug, i.a.) blocked the initial excitatory effects of 5-H

Neurodevelopment. Parasympathetic ganglia derive from Schwann cell precursors.

Neural crest cells migrate extensively and give rise to most of the peripheral nervous system, including sympathetic, parasympathetic, enteric, and dorsal root ganglia. We studied how parasympathetic ganglia form close to visceral organs and what their precursors are. We find that many cranial nerve-associated crest cells coexpress the pan-autonomic determinant Paired-like homeodomain 2b (Phox2b) together with markers of Schwann cell precursors. Some give rise to Schwann cells after down-regulation of PHOX2b. Others form parasympathetic ganglia after being guided to the site of ganglion format

Studies upon the mechanism by which acetylcholine releases surplus acetylcholine in a sympathetic ganglion.

1. Acetylcholine (ACh) releases surplus ACh from the superior cervical ganglion of the cat and the experiments described in this paper tested whether this results from exchange of endogenous ACh with exogenous ACh; the experiments also attempted to characterize pharmacologically the mechanism of this action of ACh. 2. The surplus ACh in the ganglion was radioactively labelled by perfusion of the ganglion with [3H]-choline-Krebs solution containing diisopropylphosphofluoridate, and the release of surplus [3H]-ACh by [14C]-ACh injected close arterially to the ganglion measured. The amount of [3H

Chronic idiopathic anhidrosis.

We describe the cases of eight patients with chronic idiopathic anhidrosis. These patients were heat intolerant and became hot, flushed, dizzy, dyspneic, and weak but did not sweat when the ambient temperature was high or when they exercised. Four patients had preganglionic sudomotor lesions and in the remaining 4 the lesion appeared to be postganglionic. The patients did not have orthostatic hypotension, other evidence of generalized autonomic failure, or symptomatic somatic neuropathy. One patient regained thermoregulatory sweat function and no patient's condition progressed to generalized a

An error in interpretation and real extraordinary electrocardiographic changes in patient with acute traumatic spondylolisthesis.

BACKGROUND: Acute cervical spinal trauma may lead to cardiac effects by influencing cardiac sympathetic preganglionic fibers. Some of these effects, which are vital, may occur in ECG. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old female patient admitted to the emergency department with acute traumatic spondylolisthesis at C6-C7 level and paraplegia. Positive QRS complex, ST segment depressions and prolongation of QTc interval were observed on ECG according to sudden autonomic disruption because of sympathetic nerve compression. It was mentioned that changes in QRS complex axis was normal which was depende

Development of sympathetic ganglionic neurotransmission in the neonatal rat. Pre- and postganglionic nerve response to asphyxia and 2-deoxyglucose.

To determine the time course of development of neurotransmission in the sympathetic ganglion of the rat, pre- and postganglionic activity was recorded from the cervical sympathetic trunk in anesthetized neonatal and mature preparations. Tonic activity and responses to two stimuli, cellular hypoglycemia induced by 2-deoxyglucose and asphyxia, which are known to evoke CNS-mediated sympathetic activation in mature rats were measured. In 2-11-day-old neonates, tonic preganglionic activity recorded from the cervical sympathetic nerve and responses to hypoglycemia and asphyxia were comparable to or

Effects of ketamine on the peripheral autonomic nervous system of the rat.

The effects of ketamine (2-(o-chlorophenyl) 2-methylaminocyclohexanone) (2-50 mg/kg) on the responses of the pithed rat arterial pressure, anococcygeus muscle and colon to selective stimulation of the spinal autonomic outflows were examined. Ketamine depressed the vasopressor response produced by stimulation of the lumbar sympathetic outflow in a dose-dependent manner but did not significantly affect the pressor response to intravenous noradrenaline (NA) administration. Ketamine depressed the motor responses of the anococcygeus to stimulation of the pre-ganglionic lumbar sympathetic outflow or

[An experimental study of the effects of ketamine on the central sympathetic system, respiration and circulation (author's transl)].

Cats were given basal anaesthesia (nitrous oxide-oxygen) with artificial ventilation. They were then injected intravenously with 5 mg/kilogram bodyweight of ketamine. The injection was followed by a marked ketamine. The injection was followed by a marked reduction in both the tone of the central sympathetic system and the activity of the phrenic nerve which lasted for 10 minutes and 30 minutes respectively. Doses of 10 mg/kilogram bodyweight caused a longer lasting and more pronounced lowering of sympathetic activity while phrenic activity was approximately the same as with the smaller dosage.

Infravesical nerve resection for detrusor dyssynergia. The Ingelman-Sundberg operation.

In 1959 a paper was published in Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand (38:487, 1959) by Axel Ingelman-Sundberg (1) entitled "Partial Denervation of the Bladder--a new operation for the treatment of Urge Incontinence and similar conditions in women". The basis for the operation was stated in the initial sentence: "The function of an autonomous neurogenic bladder is usually superior to that of a neurogenic bladder, where higher centers are still partially in function." His operation consisted of transection of the preganglionic pelvic nerves near the inferior surface of the bladder and involved division of
