Intrarenal and extrarenal autonomic nervous system redefined.

PURPOSE: The autonomic nervous supply to the kidneys is involved in the development of several diseases including hypertension. The neural distribution at the segmental vessels and intrarenal vasculature has not been well characterized. Thus, we evaluated the autonomic nerve distribution from the great vessels to the renal cortex in a cadaveric model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a detailed anatomical nerve dissection from the inferior mesenteric artery to the renal operculum in 2 human cadaveric torsos. Autonomic nerve fibers were verified by dissecting the greater splanchnic, sympath

Nutritional stimulation of the autonomic nervous system.

Disturbance of the inflammatory response in the gut is important in several clinical diseases ranging from inflammatory bowel disease to postoperative ileus. Several feedback mechanisms exist that control the inflammatory cascade and avoid collateral damage. In the gastrointestinal tract, it is of particular importance to control the immune response to maintain the balance that allows dietary uptake and utilization of nutrients on one hand, while preventing invasion of bacteria and toxins on the other hand. The process of digestion and absorption of nutrients requires a relative hyporesponsive

Autonomic complications following central nervous system injury.

Severe sympathetic overactivity occurs in several conditions that are recognized as medical emergencies. Following central nervous system injury, a small proportion of individuals develop severe paroxysmal sympathetic and motor overactivity. These individuals have a high attendant risk of unnecessary secondary morbidity. Following acquired brain injury, the syndrome is known by a number of names including dysautonomia and sympathetic storm. Dysautonomia is currently a diagnosis of exclusion and often goes unrecognized. The evidence base for management is almost entirely anecdotal in nature; th

[Autonomic nervous system and sleep apnea syndromes].

Understanding of the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnoea, a common yet relatively newly recognised condition, has advanced rapidly in recent years. This condition produces major acute haemodynamic changes and causal relationships with arterial hypertension and cardiovascular morbidity have been proposed. The role that the autonomic nervous system plays in mediating these cardiovascular changes has been the focus of intensive research activity and the development of new techniques in physiological monitoring, such as spectral analysis of heart rate variability, Finapres blood pressure m

[Atrial fibrillation and the autonomic nervous system].

The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in the genesis of various cardiac rhythm disorders. Experimental studies have indicated that in atrial fibrillation particularly vagal activity may have a decisive influence on the electrophysiologic properties of atrial myocardium. In patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, a carefully taken history and electrocardiographic findings obtained during Holter monitoring can help to distinguish vagally mediated from adrenergically mediated atrial fibrillation. The former is considered to represent a form of lone atrial fibrillation affecti

Vibration stress and the autonomic nervous system.

Raynaud's phenomenon has been considered to be due to activation of the central sympathetic vasoconstrictor reflex, and may represent part of a larger dysfunction of higher autonomic centers. Symptoms, such as sweating disturbances, orthostatic hypotension, insomnia and impotence have been reported to be more common among vibration exposed workers. We studied 217 male forest workers and selected samples of this population for electromyographic (N = 80), autonomic nervous system function, controlled breathing, tilting bed and valsalva manoeuvre (N = 88) tests, and a full clinical neurological e

The autonomic nervous system and perinatal metabolism.

The development of the autonomic nervous system in relation to perinatal metabolism is reviewed with particular attention given to the adipocyte, hepatocyte and the A and B cells of the islets of Langerhans. Adrenergic receptors develop in the B cell independently of normal innervation and by the time of birth, in most species studied, the pancreas, liver and adipose tissue respond appropriately to autonomic signals. Birth is associated with a huge surge in circulating catecholamines which is probably responsible for the early postnatal rise in free fatty acids and glucagon concentrations in p

Evaluating dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system.

Simple bedside measurements of blood pressure and systolic pressure response to the Valsalva maneuver will confirm a clinical impression of orthostatic hypotension. Careful questioning of the patient usually elicits other symptoms of autonomic nervous system dysfunction, such as impotence, urinary and fecal incontinence, constipation or diarrhea, blurred vision, or sweating changes. Drugs are the most common cause of autonomic dysfunction, and their benefits should be weighed against the severity of the dysfunction. In addition, diabetes mellitus, uremia, amyloidosis, acute intermittent porphy

Peripheral nervous system in multiple sclerosis-understanding the involvement via autonomic nervous system.

AIM: The aim of this review is to summarize the clinical and paraclinical findings that demonstrate that multiple sclerosis (MS) affects the peripheral nervous system (PNS) as well as the central nervous system (CNS). Methods: Narrative review. RESULTS: MS is traditionally defined as a chronic demyelinating immune-mediated disease of the CNS. However, there is emerging evidence that MS is a disease that does not solely affect the CNS but can manifest with PNS involvement as well. Several pathology studies have reported on signs of demyelination in the PNS, as well as on structural and functio

Central nervous system plus autonomic nervous system disorders responsible for gastrointestinal and pancreatobiliary diseases.

Clinical digestive disorders depend on the non-adequate coupling of functioning of the gastrointestinal tract with that of its affluent systems, namely, the pancreatic exocrine and the hepato-biliary secretions. The secretion of gastrointestinal hormones is monitored by the peripheral autonomic nervous system. However, the latter is regulated by the central nervous system (CNS) circuitry localized at the medullary pontine segment of the CNS. In turn, both parasympathetic and adrenergic medullary circuitries are regulated by the pontine A5 noradrenergic (NA) and the dorsal raphe serotonergic nu

[The interface between the immune system and autonomic nervous system].

The nervous system and the immune system are two major systems in human body. Although it was revealed these two systems correlated, the control of immune cell dynamics by the nervous system has come to draw a lot of attention at the present time. Recent advances in basic and preclinical science reveal that reflex neural circuits inhibit the production of cytokines and inflammation in several animal models. One well-characterized cytokine-inhibiting mechanism, termed the "inflammatory reflex", is dependent upon vagus nerve stimulation that inhibits cytokine production and attenuates the inflam

Role of the autonomic nervous system in osteoarthritis.

Joint homeostasis is affected by local and systemic processes. Catecholaminergic and cholinergic fibers innervate the synovium, trabecular bone, and periosteum. Several studies have investigated the involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in joint homeostasis and the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA). Various resident cells of osteoarticular tissues express receptors for sympathetic and parasympathetic neurotransmitters (norepinephrine/epinephrine and acetylcholine, respectively), which enables them to respond to autonomic stimuli. Furthermore, some of these cells are also able

ATP as a cotransmitter in the autonomic nervous system.

The role of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) as a major intracellular energy source is well-established. In addition, ATP and related nucleotides have widespread extracellular actions via the ionotropic P2X (ligand-gated cation channels) and metabotropic P2Y (G protein-coupled) receptors. Numerous experimental techniques, including myography, electrophysiology and biochemical measurement of neurotransmitter release, have been used to show that ATP has several major roles as a neurotransmitter in peripheral nerves. When released from enteric nerves of the gastrointestinal tract it acts as an inh

Examination of the autonomic nervous system at the bedside.

Autonomic function is an integral part of the assessment of neurological disorders. However, pragmatically, it is often the most neglected part of neurological examination and is often limited to testing for orthostatic hypotension. Testing the autonomic nervous system may aid in the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders, thereby enabling the initiation of neuroprotective strategies and resulting in improved quality of life in this group of patients. It may also enable differentiation between certain atypical parkinsonisms, such as Multiple System Atrophy and Dementia with Lewy Bodies

The autonomic nervous system and the origins of neurocardiology.

Following new concepts by Bichat in the early 19th century, of organic and animal life centered around the ganglionic nervous system, over 100 years of anatomic studies and physiologic experimentation eventually resulted in Gaskell's 1916 book entitled "The Involuntary Nervous System" and Langley's 1921 book entitled "The Autonomic Nervous System." Neurology and cardiology emerged as specialties of medicine in the early 20th century. Although neurology made several prominent discoveries in neurophysiology during the first half of the 20th century, cardiology developed coronary care units and c

Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Autonomic Nervous System.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: This article reviews the anatomic, functional, and neurochemical organization of the sympathetic and parasympathetic outputs; the effects on target organs; the central mechanisms controlling autonomic function; and the pathophysiologic basis for core symptoms of autonomic failure. RECENT FINDINGS: Functional neuroimaging studies have elucidated the areas involved in central control of autonomic function in humans. Optogenetic and other novel approaches in animal experiments have provided new insights into the role of these areas in autonomic control across behavioral st
