Assessment of Autonomic Nervous System in Children with Celiac Disease: A Heart Rate Variability Study.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the activity of autonomic nervous system in children with celiac disease by using heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. METHODS: HRV parameters of 37 children with celiac disease were compared to 36 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. None of the participants had a systemic, central or peripheral neurological disease. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were present in two parameters; standard deviation of all RR intervals (SDNN) and standard deviation of 5-minute RR interval means (SDANN). Age was negatively correlated with mean, minimum and maximum he

Disturbances of autonomic nervous system activity and diminished response to stress in patients with celiac disease.

Celiac disease (CED) is immune-mediated enteropathy caused by gluten intolerance affecting genetically predisposed individuals. CED may exert a number of various symptoms, including extra intestinal manifestations. Neurological symptoms can be the first sign of gluten intolerance. However, affected autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity may be linked to other symptoms. We evaluated the frequency of ANS impairment and resting ANS response to several stimuli in CED patients without neurological manifestations. Twenty five neurologically asymptomatic patients with CED were studied. The medical h

Parkinson's disease and metabolic disorders, understanding their shared co-morbidity through the autonomic nervous system.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and nonmotor dysfunctions. Its pathological hallmark is the aggregation of ɑ-synuclein in the central nervous system (CNS), leading to widespread loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Interestingly, metabolic disorders localized in the periphery, such as diabetes mellitus, frequently co-occur with PD. Emerging evidence highlights a bidirectional relationship: metabolic diseases may accelerate PD progression, while PD can exacerbate metabolic dysfunction. Beyond these associations, a

Effects of physical exercise on the autonomic nervous system in patients with coronary artery disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Imbalance in autonomic modulation can occur after a cardiac event, which can lead to deleterious consequences. Exercise has proven to be a therapy which affects this modulation and can be assessed through heart rate variability (HRV). AREAS COVERED: The objective of this systematic review was to investigate the effects of physical exercise on heart rate variability in individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD). The PubMed, PEDro, Scielo, Lilacs and Cochrane databases were systematically searched, for articles which performed supervised exercises in phase II of cardiac rehabili

Autonomic nervous system and cardiac neuro-signaling pathway modulation in cardiovascular disorders and Alzheimer's disease.

The heart is a functional syncytium controlled by a delicate and sophisticated balance ensured by the tight coordination of its several cell subpopulations. Accordingly, cardiomyocytes together with the surrounding microenvironment participate in the heart tissue homeostasis. In the right atrium, the sinoatrial nodal cells regulate the cardiac impulse propagation through cardiomyocytes, thus ensuring the maintenance of the electric network in the heart tissue. Notably, the central nervous system (CNS) modulates the cardiac rhythm through the two limbs of the autonomic nervous system (ANS): the

Analysis of the adrenal gland is useful for evaluating pathology of the peripheral autonomic nervous system in lewy body disease.

Lewy body disease is defined as Lewy body-related neuronal degeneration involving the nigrostriatal system, limbic-neocortical system, and peripheral autonomic nervous system (PANS). We investigated whether the adrenal gland, which is evolutionarily related to sympathetic ganglia and is routinely examined in general autopsy, could be used to assess pathology of the PANS in Lewy body disease. Brains, spinal cords, and adrenal glands from 783 consecutive autopsy cases from a general geriatric hospital were examined immunohistochemically with antiphosphorylated alpha-synuclein antibodies and rout

Evaluation of the autonomic nervous system in autochthonous patients from Amazon with acute Chagas disease treated with benznidazole.

Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease, is endemic in the Amazon region, where oral transmission predominates. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) impairment is a recognized pathophysiological mechanism contributing to disease progression, including Chagas cardiomyopathy. This study aimed to assess ANS function in patients with acute Chagas disease from the Amazon, evaluating responses pre- and post-benznidazole treatment. We included 28 acute-phase patients and 20 healthy controls. Participants underwent comprehensive cardiac evaluations, including 12-lead ECG, echocardiogram, 24-hour Holter

Does autonomic nervous system dysfunction influence cardiovascular disease risk in young adults with intellectual disability?

People with intellectual disability (ID) experience cardiometabolic-related morbidity and mortality. However, it has been suggested that this population presents and lives with underestimated cardiovascular risk factors at a younger age, hence affecting their overall health and quality of life and contributing to early mortality. We assessed autonomic nervous system function in subjects with ID (n = 39), aged 18-45 yr, through measures of sudomotor function, heart rate and systolic blood pressure variability, and cardiac baroreflex function. Traditional clinical cardiovascular measurements and

Autonomic Nervous System Function After a Skin-to-Skin Contact Intervention in Infants With Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: Infants with complex congenital heart disease (CCHD) demonstrate impaired autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation, which may contribute to commonly observed impairments in feeding, growth, and development. Close mother-infant physical contact improves ANS function in other high-risk infant populations. OBJECTIVE: Our purposes were to examine feasibility of a 2-week daily skin-to-skin contact (SSC) intervention and to describe change in ANS function in response to the intervention. METHODS: Feasibility was assessed by recruitment and retention rates, safety, and acceptability. A

Autonomic nervous system tone measured by baroreflex sensitivity is depressed in patients with end-stage liver disease.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic liver disease is often associated with impairment of autonomic nervous system (ANS) reflexes. Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) testing is an inexpensive, relatively noninvasive test that can be used to assess ANS tone. The aims of the present study were to determine the prevalence of ANS dysfunction in cirrhotics who are being considered for liver transplantation and to explore the potential use of BRS as a prognostic tool in identifying patients awaiting transplantation who are at increased risk for death. METHODS: We studied nine cirrhotics who were awaiting liver transplant
