Enhancing Surgical Precision in Autonomous Robotic Incisions via Physics-Based Tissue Cutting Simulation.

In soft tissue surgeries, such as tumor resections, achieving precision is of utmost importance. Surgeons conventionally achieve this precision through intraoperative adjustments to the cutting plan, responding to deformations from tool-tissue interactions. This study examines the integration of physics-based tissue cutting simulations into autonomous robotic surgery to preoperatively predict and compensate for such deformations, aiming to improve surgical precision and reduce the necessity for dynamic adjustments during autonomous surgeries. This study adapts a real-to-sim-to-real workflow. I

A semi-autonomous robot control based on bone layer transition detection for a safe pedicle tapping.

PURPOSE: Automatic robotic platforms for robot-aided spinal surgery are mostly employed for drilling the pedicle screw path and do not adapt the tool rotational speed depending on the variation of the bone density. This feature is highly desirable in control strategies for robot-aided pedicle tapping, which may result in a poor quality thread if the surgical tool speed is not adequately tuned depending on the bone density to be threaded. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to propose a novel semi-autonomous control for robot-aided pedicle tapping that is able to (i) identify the bone lay

Towards Autonomous Robotic Minimally Invasive Ultrasound Scanning and Vessel Reconstruction on Non-Planar Surfaces.

Autonomous robotic Ultrasound (US) scanning has been the subject of research for more than 2 decades. However, little work has been done to apply this concept into a minimally invasive setting, in which accurate force sensing is generally not available and robot kinematics are unreliable due to the tendon-driven, compliant robot structure. As a result, the adequate orientation of the probe towards the tissue surface remains unknown and the anatomy reconstructed from scan may become highly inaccurate. In this work we present solutions to both of these challenges: an attitude sensor fusion schem

Projection surface detection and pose selection for autonomously displaying multimedia on walls using mobile robots.

Mobile robots equipped with projectors enable versatile applications such as multimedia display, interactive communication, and environmental augmentation. However, wall projection, which is required for displaying multimedia content on walls, remains challenging, because it is difficult to autonomously locate a projection space that is both flat and unobstructed. Some existing approaches address wall projection using 2D maps or by considering only large continuous surfaces, but these methods fail to capture the full potential of detailed 3D information of the operation area and often overlook

Autonomously Motile Nano-PROTACs Act as Protein-Sweeping Robots to Enhance Targeted Protein Degradation.

Although nanoparticle-based PROTACs (nPROs) provide a modular strategy to improve the biological fate of PROTACs, their degradation performance was fundamentally limited by restricted intracellular diffusivity. Here, we introduced an unconventional solution: Imparting autonomous motility to nPROs to transform them from passive carriers into active protein-seeking degraders. We engineered nano-motoring PROTACs (nMPROs) through asymmetric modification of gold nanoparticles, displaying POI ligands and E3 recruiters on one hemisphere while anchoring catalase on the opposite hemisphere. Within the

Use of an autonomous robotic system for removal of fiber posts during endodontic retreatment: A clinical report.

The removal of fiber posts for the retreatment of root canals can be challenging. An autonomous robotic (ATR) system was used for accurate and minimally invasive endodontic retreatment in a patient who presented with symptomatic apical periodontitis and pain emanating from the mandibular left first molar, which had been previously restored with 3 fiber posts. Intraoral scanning data, radiographic data, and bur sizes were integrated into preoperative software program to design a treatment plan. The ATR system enabled precise and efficient post removal. The remnant filling material was removed be

Willingness to undergo autonomous robotic surgery in Jordanian medical students: a national multicenter cross-sectional survey.

Surgical robots in clinical use operate under continuous human control, yet research systems now perform surgical tasks on their own. Patient willingness may limit adoption, and to our knowledge no study has measured willingness across defined levels of autonomy while holding performance constant. To estimate the willingness of Jordanian medical students to undergo high-autonomy robotic surgery with immediate surgeon oversight and to quantify how willingness changes as autonomy increases. We conducted a national, multicenter, cross-sectional online survey of a convenience sample of undergradua

Autonomous robotic alignment and dynamic illumination control of an ophthalmic slit lamp for in vivo anterior segment imaging.

SIGNIFICANCE: The slit lamp is the gold standard ophthalmic instrument for examining the anterior segment of the eye. Slit lamps require the mechanical stabilization of patients to facilitate alignment and a specialized technician to operate. The growing demand for ophthalmic care and shortages of specialists highlight the need for alternative diagnostic technologies. AIM: We demonstrate an autonomously aligning, contactless slit lamp enabled by a vision-guided robot to acquire anterior segment images without mechanical patient stabilization. APPROACH: We integrate three subsystems mounted t

ResNet-18 based multi-task visual inference and adaptive control for an edge-deployed autonomous robot.

Current industrial robots deployed in small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) are too complex, expensive, or dependent on external computing resources. In order to bridge this gap, we introduce an autonomous logistics robot that combines adaptive control and visual perception on a small edge computing platform. The NVIDIA Jetson Nano was equipped with a modified ResNet-18 model that allowed it to concurrently execute three tasks: object-handling zone recognition, obstacle detection, and path tracking. A lightweight rack-and-pinion mechanism enables payload lifting of up to 2 kg without extern

Autonomous Closed-Loop Control for Robotic Soft Tissue Electrosurgery Using RGB-D Image Guidance.

Oral cavity cancer, a common head and neck cancer, is typically treated through precise tumor excision via electrosurgery. Autonomous robotic electrosurgery has demonstrated the potential to achieve more accurate and consistent resection margins compared to manual methods, thereby improving surgical outcomes. However, current autonomous systems face challenges in tracking tissue deformation during electrosurgical cutting due to unpredictable and complex soft tissue dynamics. Failure to monitor and adapt to tissue deformation can significantly compromise resection precision. This paper presents

Accuracy Evaluation of a Novel Spinal Robotic System for Autonomous Laminectomy in Thoracic and Lumbar Vertebrae: A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: The main function of robots in spine surgery is to assist with pedicle screw placement. Laminectomy, which is as important as pedicle screw placement, lacks a mature robot-assisted system. The aims of this study were to introduce the first autonomous laminectomy robot, to explore the feasibility of autonomous robotic laminectomy, and to validate its accuracy using a cadaveric model. METHODS: Forty vertebrae from 4 cadavers were included in the study; 7 thoracic and 3 lumbar vertebrae were randomly selected in each cadaver. The surgeon was able to plan the laminectomy path based on

High-accuracy drilling with an image guided light weight robot: autonomous versus intuitive feed control.

PURPOSE: Assistance of robotic systems in the operating room promises higher accuracy and, hence, demanding surgical interventions become realisable (e.g. the direct cochlear access). Additionally, an intuitive user interface is crucial for the use of robots in surgery. Torque sensors in the joints can be employed for intuitive interaction concepts. Regarding the accuracy, they lead to a lower structural stiffness and, thus, to an additional error source. The aim of this contribution is to examine, if an accuracy needed for demanding interventions can be achieved by such a system or not. METH

Autonomous Marine Robotic Technology Reveals an Expansive Benthic Bacterial Community Relevant to Regional Nitrogen Biogeochemistry.

Benthic accumulations of filamentous, mat-forming bacteria occur throughout the oceans where bisulfide mingles with oxygen or nitrate, providing key but poorly quantified linkages between elemental cycles of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur. Here we used the autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry to conduct a contiguous, 12.5 km photoimaging survey of sea-floor colonies of filamentous bacteria between 80 and 579 m water depth, spanning the continental shelf to the deep suboxic waters of the Santa Barbara Basin (SBB). The survey provided >31 000 images and revealed contiguous, white-colored bacterial

Movement speed of an autonomous prosthetic limb shapes embodiment, usability and robotic social attributes in virtual reality.

Autonomous robotic prostheses can aid individuals with limb loss regain functionality and near-normal appearance. However, to psychologically integrate such limbs into one's body image, it is necessary to understand how movement characteristics, such as movement speed, affect the sense of embodiment. Using a VR simulation, we investigated how the speed of autonomous lower-arm movements affects embodiment and user-perception. Nineteen healthy participants embodied an amputated virtual avatar with a prosthetic lower left-arm moving autonomously at six different speeds following minimum-jerk traj
