Waymo simulated driving behavior in reconstructed fatal crashes within an autonomous vehicle operating domain.

Preventing and mitigating high severity collisions is one of the main opportunities for Automated Driving Systems (ADS) to improve road safety. This study evaluated the Waymo Driver's performance within real-world fatal collision scenarios that occurred in a specific operational design domain (ODD). To address the rare nature of high-severity collisions, this paper describes the addition of novel techniques to established safety impact assessment methodologies. A census of fatal, human-involved collisions was examined for years 2008 through 2017 for Chandler, AZ, which overlaps the current geo

Revealing the behavioral architecture of autonomous vehicle crashes: an interaction-based typology using real-world reports.

Over recent years, hundreds of crashes have been recorded during on-road testing of autonomous vehicles (AVs), underscoring the importance of understanding how these systems behave alongside human drivers in mixed traffic. Most previous research has focused on geometric crash outcomes, offering limited characterization of the paired vehicle motion states preceding impact. This study examines verified California DMV OL-316 crash reports (2024-2025) to construct an Interaction-Based Crash Typology (IBCT) that systematically describes AV-human motion configurations based on paired discrete pre-cr

Spatial observations of low-frequency acoustic propagation near isolated seamounts using an autonomous surface vehicle.

This work demonstrates the feasibility of using autonomous surface vehicles equipped with a shallow towed acoustic module (TAM) to survey the spatial variability of low-frequency acoustic propagation across complex bathymetry, such as the Atlantis II seamounts in the Northwest Atlantic. The abrupt seamount topography is found to significantly influence the TAM's recordings of chirp transmissions (500-600 Hz band) from a bottom-moored source ∼30 km from the seamounts by notably causing blockage of in-plane propagation paths and complex reverberation arrivals displaying three-dimensional effects

Developing a heuristic relationship to predict the spinal injury during vertical impact for autonomous vehicle and bio environment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recent research and tested data suggested that spinal injuries occur more often in a frontal impact. Most of the published information is focused on the lumbar spinal injury with respect to axial compression force by varying the height of drops. Parametric studies on the lumbar spinal injury are very scanty. Therefore, the present investigation aimed to optimize the effects of drop height, torso weight and seat angle on the characterization of lumbar injury criteria METHODS: A detailed finite element model of a spine with multi-segmented spinal columns is developed an

Balancing adversariality and naturalness in autonomous vehicle testing scenario generation via multi-objective reinforcement learning.

Reinforcement learning (RL)-based adversarial scenario generation through dynamic agent-environment interactions has emerged as a promising approach for accelerating autonomous vehicle (AV) testing. However, existing RL approaches struggle to balance adversariality and naturalness because naturalistic driving behaviors avoid risk whereas adversarial behaviors intentionally induce it. The reward-driven nature of RL can further lead to objective polarization under linearly weighted rewards, resulting in scenarios biased toward a limited range of adversariality-naturalness trade-offs. This study

Dynamic variance-aware federated tuning for efficient autonomous vehicle perception under non-IID settings.

INTRODUCTION: Federated learning enables multiple autonomous vehicles (AVs) to collaboratively train machine learning models while preserving data privacy. However, performance degrades significantly under non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data conditions commonly encountered in real-world driving scenarios. Existing aggregation methods, particularly Federated Averaging (FedAvg), struggle to effectively handle client update divergence, leading to inefficient communication, unstable convergence, and increased privacy risks. METHODS: To address these challenges, we propose a

Multi-sensor fusion and segmentation for autonomous vehicle multi-object tracking using deep Q networks.

Autonomous vehicles, often known as self-driving cars, have emerged as a disruptive technology with the promise of safer, more efficient, and convenient transportation. The existing works provide achievable results but lack effective solutions, as accumulation on roads can obscure lane markings and traffic signs, making it difficult for the self-driving car to navigate safely. Heavy rain, snow, fog, or dust storms can severely limit the car's sensors' ability to detect obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles, which pose potential safety risks. So, we have presented a multi-sensor fusion and

Optical flow prompts distractor-aware siamese network for tracking autonomous underwater vehicle with sonar and camera videos.

Underwater moving target tracking with sonar device is very challenging. Due to complex underwater environment, sonar acquired videos have domain-specific challenges like texture-similar backgrounds and variable visual attributes, impairing the performance of existing tracking models. To address these issues, we propose a visual tracking model named OFDTrack to overcome the limitations of existing methods. First, for moving target in sonar videos, a re-capture paradigm is proposed to search potential motion areas from rough prompts of the optical flow field, thus maintaining tracking in the ev

Understanding older adults' needs for and perceptions of shared autonomous vehicle interior features: A focus group and user enactment study.

Shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) can help older adults maintain mobility and independence throughout the later stages of life. However, research is critically needed to assess the design of SAV interior features and quantify potential mobility challenges for older populations. This paper presents a study that adopted a mixed-methods approach to evaluate the needs and perceptions of adults aged 65 years and older regarding interior features of SAVs during user enactment, and offers data-driven insights on task performance to inform design decisions. Thirty participants interacted with an SAV m

Safety-critical trajectory segment generation for autonomous driving testing in vehicle-to-two-wheeler blind-spot emergence scenarios.

OBJECTIVE: Safety validation of autonomous driving systems (ADS) is constrained by the rarity of safety-critical interactions in naturalistic driving and the difficulty of generating realistic multi-agent trajectories from reconstructed crash data. This study focuses on a common urban safety-critical scenario in which two wheelers suddenly emerge from a driver's blind spot into the vehicle's path, putting riders at high risk of severe or fatal injuries. The objective is to generate safety-critical pre-crash trajectory segments for ADS testing in such scenarios. METHODS: A segment-level genera

Autonomous vehicle safety testing acceleration: A new diffusion-reachability framework for high-risk powered two-wheeler interactions.

Safe operation of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) in complex traffic scenarios remains a challenge, particularly in interactions with Powered Two-Wheelers (PTWs), whose riders represent a common and vulnerable group of road users. This study proposes DRIVE (Diffusion-Reachability-based Interaction and Validation for Efficient scenario testing), an integrated framework for risk-oriented accelerated safety testing in car-PTW interactions. The framework combines diffusion-based trajectory generation, backward reachability analysis, and reachability-guided sampling to construct and prioritize safety-cri

QCAE-QOC-SVM: A hybrid quantum machine learning model for DoS and Fuzzy attack detection on autonomous vehicle CAN bus.

In this study, we introduce a hybrid quantum machine learning method to identify Normal signal, DoS, and Fuzzy attacks on the CAN bus utilized in autonomous vehicles. Our approach is a combination of a Quantum Convolutional Autoencoder (QCAE) and a Quantum Orthogonal Classifier based on Support Vector Machines (QOC-SVM). The method effectively extracts patterns from CAN bus traffic with the help of quantum-powered classification for accurate anomaly detection. The model was assessed using a public and custom dataset of 300,000 instances generated through the CARLA simulator and was run on a hi

Scenario-first injury-risk phenotyping of autonomous vehicle crashes: distinguishing pre-crash interaction structures from ODD micro-contexts.

OBJECTIVES: Existing autonomous vehicle (AV) crash-injury studies are predominantly variable-centered and often separate scenario classification from injury modeling. This study developed a scenario-first framework to determine whether injury probability conditional on an observed crash is organized primarily by broad pre-crash interaction structures or by localized operational design domain (ODD) conditions. METHODS: A validated database of 2,946 AV crashes recorded from January 2015 to July 2024 was assembled from regulatory reports and verified public sources. Without using injury outcomes

Virtual reality-induced motion sickness under autonomous vehicle driving conditions: EEG-based recognition and ANOVA analysis of various driving modes.

Motion sickness induced by autonomous driving technology poses a new challenge to the emerging sustainable transportation systems. This study investigates the association between motion sickness in autonomous driving and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals under three laboratory-based simulated scenarios: manual driving, resting, and autonomous driving. EEG data were recorded from participants in each mode, alongside the collection of motion sickness symptoms through questionnaires. Data analysis and exploration were conducted to explore the relationship between autonomous driving-induced motio

Surface Electromyography Study Using a Low-Cost System: Are There Neck Muscles Differences When the Passenger Is Warned during an Emergency Braking Inside an Autonomous Vehicle?

Deaths and serious injuries caused by traffic accidents is a concerning public health problem. However, the problem can be mitigated by the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system, which can avoid the impact. The market penetration of AEB is exponentially growing, and non-impact situations are expected to become more frequent. Thus, new injury patterns must be analysed, and the neck is particularly sensitive to sudden acceleration changes. Abrupt braking would be enough to be a potential risk for cervical spine injury. There is controversy about whether or not there are differences in cervic

Do two-wheeler riders propel towards autonomous driving? A path-based probabilistic study in Indian context.

Regardless of the rational benefits of autonomous vehicle adoption towards mitigating mobility goals in urban and sub-urban areas of middle-income countries, adoption of such technology remains thought-provoking. Two wheeled vehicles are often utilized extensively all over the world for short distance trips in sub-urban areas. The present study investigates perceived risks of using four wheeled autonomous vehicles by captive two-wheeler riders for long and short distance trips in densely populated Indian cities. Theoretical autonomous vehicle technology acceptance models were modified consider

The ideological divide in public perceptions of self-driving cars.

Applications in artificial intelligence such as self-driving cars may profoundly transform our society, yet emerging technologies are frequently faced with suspicion or even hostility. Meanwhile, public opinions about scientific issues are increasingly polarized along the ideological line. By analyzing a nationally representative panel in the United States, we reveal an emerging ideological divide in public reactions to self-driving cars. Compared with liberals and Democrats, conservatives and Republicans express more concern about autonomous vehicles and more support for restrictively regulat
