Neuronal Avalanches to Study the Coordination of Large-Scale Brain Activity: Application to Rett Syndrome.

Many complex systems, such as the brain, display large-scale coordinated interactions that create ordered patterns. Classically, such patterns have been studied using the framework of criticality, i.e., at a transition point between two qualitatively distinct patterns. This kind of system is generally characterized by a scale-invariant organization, in space and time, optimally described by a power-law distribution whose slope is quantified by an exponent α. The dynamics of these systems is characterized by alternating periods of activations, called avalanches, with quiescent periods. To maxim

Identification of Criticality in Neuronal Avalanches: I. A Theoretical Investigation of the Non-driven Case.

In this paper, we study a simple model of a purely excitatory neural network that, by construction, operates at a critical point. This model allows us to consider various markers of criticality and illustrate how they should perform in a finite-size system. By calculating the exact distribution of avalanche sizes, we are able to show that, over a limited range of avalanche sizes which we precisely identify, the distribution has scale free properties but is not a power law. This suggests that it would be inappropriate to dismiss a system as not being critical purely based on an inability to rig

Avalanche burial pathophysiology - a unique combination of hypoxia, hypercapnia and hypothermia.

For often unclear reasons, the survival times of critically buried avalanche victims vary widely from minutes to hours. Individuals can survive and sustain organ function if they can breathe under the snow and maintain sufficient delivery of oxygen and efflux of carbon dioxide. We review the physiological responses of humans to critical avalanche burial, a model which shares similarities and differences with apnoea and accidental hypothermia. Within a few minutes of burial, an avalanche victim is exposed to hypoxaemia and hypercapnia, which have important effects on the respiratory and cardiov

Avalanche fatalities in Czech Republic: a 23-years retrospective study.

Avalanche fatalities are quite rare in the Czech Republic. Due to the presence of avalanche fields in the two Czech mountains, forensic pathologists at some forensic medicine departments may encounter this specific mechanism of accidental death. The authors summarize medicolegal aspects of deaths in avalanches in the territory of the Czech Republic for the twenty-three-year period between 1993-2015. Ten avalanche fatalities were recorded during study period. The studied group consisted of nine male and one female victims. The average age of the deceased was 27.9 years. Skiers or ski-alpinists

Behavior in Avalanche Terrain: An Exploratory Study of Illegal Snowmobiling in Norway.

Snowmobilers make a grim and significant contribution to avalanche fatality statistics in Norway. However, there is limited knowledge on the behavior of this group in avalanche terrain and the factors influencing this behavior. Our study documents what snowmobilers do and not do in avalanche terrain, how their behavior relates to managing complex avalanche conditions and if there is a mismatch between avalanche competence, education and riding preferences. This ethnographic study observed snowmobiler tracks and thus avalanche terrain usage in Northern Norway during 2018 and 2019, supported by

Thermal activation drives a finite-size crossover from scale-free to runaway avalanches in amorphous solids.

We investigate thermal avalanche dynamics in amorphous solids using elastoplastic models with local activation rules and no external driving. Dynamical heterogeneities, quantified through persistence measurements and the associated four-point susceptibility χ_{4}, reveal the emergence of correlated spatiotemporal rearrangements as temperature is varied. As temperature increases, avalanche statistics evolve from scale-free behavior with exponential cutoffs to regimes dominated by system-spanning runaway events. We identify a system-size-dependent critical temperature T_{c}(L) that separates int

Neuronal avalanches in temporal lobe epilepsy as a noninvasive diagnostic tool investigating large scale brain dynamics.

The epilepsy diagnosis still represents a complex process, with misdiagnosis reaching 40%. We aimed at building an automatable workflow, helping the clinicians in the diagnosis of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). We hypothesized that neuronal avalanches (NA) represent a feature better encapsulating the rich brain dynamics compared to classically used functional connectivity measures (Imaginary Coherence; ImCoh). We analyzed large-scale activation bursts (NA) from source estimation of resting-state electroencephalography. Using a support vector machine, we reached a classification accuracy of TLE

Effectiveness and use of avalanche airbags in mortality reduction among winter-recreationists.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The number of backcountry skiers and snowboarder surged in the last years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as ski resorts shut down. Inevitably, this led to an increase in avalanche-related injuries and death. As avalanche rescue device, avalanche airbags are increasingly becoming part of the standard winter mountaineering equipment. This study provides a review of the available data and an updated perspective on avalanche airbags, discussing their function and efficacy to reduce mortality and their limitations. RESULTS: Causes of death in individuals caught by

Survival in a Collapsed Stable for 37 Days After Avalanche Burial in 1755.

In 1755 in Bergemoletto, Italy, an avalanche buried 4 people (2 women, a girl, and a boy) and several animals in a stable. After 37 d in a pitch-dark confined space, 3 of the 4 people were rescued alive. The 3 survivors had only goat milk, a few chestnuts, a few kg of raw kid meat, and meltwater for nutrition. We describe the longest-known survival in an avalanche burial and discuss the medical and psychological problems of the survivors. The boy died. When they were extricated, all 3 survivors were exhausted, cachectic, and unable to stand or walk. They were severely malnourished and were exp

Survival probability in avalanche victims with long burial (≥60 min): A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The survival of completely buried victims in an avalanche mainly depends on burial duration. Knowledge is limited about survival probability after 60 min of complete burial. AIM: We aimed to study the survival probability and prehospital characteristics of avalanche victims with long burial durations. METHODS: We retrospectively included all completely buried avalanche victims with a burial duration of ≥60 min between 1997 and 2018 in Switzerland. Data were extracted from the registry of the Swiss Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research and the prehospital medical records of th

Development of a dual approach to assess powder flow from avalanching behavior.

The purposes of this investigation were to develop a method to evaluate flow properties of powders from avalanching tests and to detect similarities and relationships between these data and conventional powder flow properties. The API AeroFlow automated flowability analyzer was tested using 6 pharmaceutical excipients. Data were presented as mean time to avalanche (MTA), scatter, and a classification based on the type of motion of the powder bed. Powders were also characterized in terms of particle size, particle shape, loss of weight on drying, Carr's compressibility index, and critical orifi

Simulated Avalanche vs Tree-Well Burial Effects on Human Physiology.

IntroductionAvalanches and tree-wells (TW) are causes of snow immersion death in skiers and snowboarders. TW burials may have different victim physiology profiles and rescue considerations than avalanche-related burials due to snow density, burial position, and compensatory physiologic responses. This study aimed to compare the physiological responses between avalanche and TW burials through a prospective controlled trial of simulated avalanche burial to simulated TW burial.MethodsEleven volunteers participated in two paired 60-min snow burials: Avalanche and TW simulations, controlling for po

Physiological effects of providing supplemental air for avalanche victims. A randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Survival from avalanche burial is dependent on time to extraction, breathing ability, air pocket oxygen content, and avoiding rebreathing of carbon dioxide (CO2). Mortality from asphyxia increases rapidly after burial. Rescue services often arrive too late. Our objective was to evaluate the physiological effects of providing personal air supply in a simulated avalanche scenario as a possible concept to delay asphyxia. We hypothesize that supplemental air toward victim's face into the air pocket will prolong the window of potential survival. METHODS: A prospective randomized crosso

Causes of Death Among Avalanche Fatalities in Colorado: A 21-Year Review.

INTRODUCTION: A better understanding of the nature of morbidity and mortality in avalanche accidents helps direct both rescue efforts as well as preventive strategies to reduce fatalities. METHODS: We reviewed all avalanche fatalities from the avalanche years beginning in 1994 to 2015 in the state of Colorado, United States, using the database maintained by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. For each fatality, we obtained the coroner's official determination of cause of death, and autopsy records if one was performed. We used these records to determine cause of death. Injury severity

An Avalanche Effect Nanomodulator Triggers Cascade Ferroptosis/Cuproptosis for Immunosuppressive Microenvironment Remodeling.

The tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment severely impedes the efficacy of immunotherapy. An avalanche effect nanomodulator, L-Arginine/lificiguat@Copper-hollow Prussian blue@Calcium phosphate nanoparticles, activates immunotherapy and remodels the immunosuppressive microenvironment through cascade-triggered ferroptosis and cuproptosis. Within the tumor microacidic environment, calcium ions released by the nanomodulator induce mitochondrial calcium overload and membrane potential collapse. Concurrently, the nanomodulator alleviates tumor hypoxia through synergistic nitric oxide production a
