BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatic diseases are serious problems worldwide, which may lead to the development of fibrosis and eventually cirrhosis. Despite the significant number of people affected by hepatic fibrosis, no effective treatment is available. In the liver, hepatic stellate cells are the major fibrogenic cell type that play a relevant function in chronic liver diseases. Thus, the characterization of components that control the fibrogenesis in the hepatic stellate cells is relevant in supporting the development of innovative therapies to treat and/or control liver fibrosis. The present stu

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic granulomatous disease caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis Almeida (Onygenales) that requires 1-2 years of treatment. In the absence of drug therapy, the disease is usually fatal, highlighting the need for the identification of safer, novel, and more effective antifungal compounds. With this need in mind, several plants employed in Brazilian traditional medicine were assayed on P. brasiliensis and murine macrophages. Extracts were prepared from 10 plant species: Inga spp. Mill. (Leguminosae), Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (Anacardiaceae), Punica g

Many plant-derived compounds, mostly of mid-to-high molecular weight, exert alexiteric properties. However, some small phenolic molecules, such as 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoic acid, are also known to be alexiteric by their ability to bind to snake venom proteins. This study presents the in vitro alexiteric activity of 2-isopropenyl-3-methylphenol [carquejiphenol, CARP; a minor compound of Baccharis trimera (Less.) DC. essential oil, BtEO] against Bothrops diporus Cope snake venom through the evaluation of proteolysis inhibition, haemolysis and coagulation and alteration of the venom proteins ban

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ultraviolet A (UVA) irradiation is the major cause of human skin aging. Suppression of UVA irradiation-induced skin fibroblast cell damage protects the skin against aging. An oxidative stress response transcription factor nuclear factor-(erythroid-derived 2)-related factor 2 (Nrf2) has an important role as a cytoprotective system against oxidative stress in the human skin and other organs. Propolis has been commonly used as a traditional medicine since ancient times. The water extract of propolis (WEP) mainly contains caffeoylquinic acids. In our previous study, we repo

We describe and illustrate lesions in an outbreak of lead arsenate poisoning in beef cattle that ingested pesticide residues stored in an abandoned building of a former orange orchard. Of 70 exposed cattle, 14 had diarrhea, paresis, ataxia, recumbency, and/or seizures. Ten of the affected animals died after a clinical course of 12-18 h. Pathologic findings in 3 steers included extensive necrohemorrhagic, ulcerative rumenitis, omasitis, and abomasitis; lymphocytolysis in lymphoid organs; and nephrosis. Hepatic arsenic and lead levels in cases 1-3 were 20, 24, and 31 ppm, and 8.3, 25, and 9.4 pp

One manner in which plant-derived compounds exert their antibiotic potential is the synergism, a positive interaction between two compounds. Studies indicate that the use of plant extracts combined with antimicrobials may promote a significant reduction of the minimum inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics for bacterial strains. This study aimed to evaluate the activity of plant extracts and antibiotics as well as their combination on Staphylococcus aureus. The activity of 15 plant extracts was evaluated using diffusion assay. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and the interactions

The increasing prohibition of animal testing for cosmetic products has driven the development of alternative approaches to ensure consumer safety. Skin sensitization is one of the most critical toxicological endpoints to evaluate, requiring rigorous assessment to ensure the safety of cosmetic ingredients. This study proposes an Integrated Testing Strategy (ITS) that combines in chemico (Direct Peptide Reactivity Assay-DPRA) and in silico approaches (a six-platform computational panel) to evaluate the sensitization potential of substances. Initially, the in chemico methodology was validated thr

A natural product isolated from Brazilian plant species Baccharis retusa (Asteraceae), 15β-senecioyloxi-ent-kaurenoic acid (1), demonstrated activity against trypomastigotes of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi but it was inactive against intracellular forms. In the present work, compound 1a, a methyl ester derivative of 1, exhibited activity against intracellular amastigotes (EC50 = 11.8 μM), similar to that determined by the standard drug benznidazol (EC50 = 16.2 μM) and no toxicity against NCTC cells (CC50 > 200 μM). Based on this selectivity, compound 1a was incorporated into Langmuir monolay
