Successful non-surgical treatment of brain abscess and necrotizing fasciitis caused by Bacillus cereus.

Musculoskeletal and central nervous system infections caused by Bacillus cereus are very rare. Only a few cases have been reported, whose clinical courses strongly suggested that surgical procedures combined with appropriate antimicrobial therapy are necessary to cure these infections. A 60-year-old man with severe neutropenia due to myelodysplastic syndrome, developing necrotizing fasciitis and brain abscess caused by Bacillus cereus is reported. Without performing any surgical procedures, the patient was successfully treated with systemic antimicrobial therapy combined with granulocyte colon

Identification of nasopharyngeal microbial dysbiosis in COVID-19 patients by 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has prompted extensive research into factors influencing the onset and severity of the disease. Among these factors, the role of the nasopharyngeal microbiome, a vital ecosystem critical for respiratory health and immune modulation, remains incompletely understood. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between the composition of nasopharyngeal microbiota and the clinical presentation of COVID-19 during the initial phase of infection. Characterization of Bacillus cereus isolates associated with fatal pneumonias: strains are closely related to Bacillus anthracis and harbor B. anthracis virulence genes.

Bacillus cereus is ubiquitous in nature, and while most isolates appear to be harmless, some are associated with food-borne illnesses, periodontal diseases, and other more serious infections. In one such infection, B. cereus G9241 was identified as the causative agent of a severe pneumonia in a Louisiana welder in 1994. This isolate was found to harbor most of the B. anthracis virulence plasmid pXO1 (13). Here we report the characterization of two clinical and one environmental B. cereus isolate collected during an investigation of two fatal pneumonia cases in Texas metal workers. Molecular su

Bacillus cereus G9241 S-layer assembly contributes to the pathogenesis of anthrax-like disease in mice.

Bacillus cereus G9241, the causative agent of anthrax-like disease, harbors virulence plasmids encoding anthrax toxins as well as hyaluronic acid (HA) and B. cereus exopolysaccharide (BPS) capsules. B. cereus G9241 also harbors S-layer genes, including homologs of Bacillus anthracis surface array protein (Sap), extractable antigen 1 (EA1), and the S-layer-associated proteins (BSLs). In B. anthracis, S-layer proteins and BSLs attach via their S-layer homology domains (SLH) to the secondary cell wall polysaccharide (SCWP) in a manner requiring csaB, a predicted ketalpyruvate transferase. Here we

A multi-omics case-control study identifying oropharyngeal microbiome-metabolite patterns that characterize secondary bacterial pneumonia among influenza patients.

Secondary bacterial pneumonia is a severe complication of influenza;howeve the biological determinants that distinguish progression from uncomplicated infection remain poorly understood. We investigated the oropharyngeal microbiome and plasma metabolome as potential discriminators of pneumonia development. In this study, we report a cross-sectional case-control study conducted during the 2022-2023 influenza season to identify and internally validate a microbiome-metabolite profile that characterizes pneumonia cases from uncomplicated influenza. We enrolled 236 consecutive influenza patients fr

Identification and in-depth characterization of clinical isolates of Peribacillus frigoritolerans.

UNLABELLED: Peribacillus frigoritolerans is a bacterial species commonly found in the environment and used as a plant-growth promoter and biocontrol agent in agriculture. Recent evidence has proven that Peribacillus spp. are also able to cause severe infections in humans, thus emerging as new human pathogens. In this study, for the first time, 10 P. frigoritolerans strains were isolated from human samples (both superficial and sterile deep body sites) and characterized in terms of morphology, lifestyle, genetics, and virulence. The molecular identification by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and 16

Management of Bacillus bacteremia: the need for catheter removal.

Bacillus species are biofilm-forming organisms that are associated with Bacillus catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). The optimal treatment of Bacillus CRBSIs is not known. Therefore, in the current study, we determined the role of long-term central venous catheter (CVC) removal and treatment with vancomycin compared with other agents in Bacillus CRBSIs by retrospectively reviewing the medical records of cancer patients with Bacillus bacteremia who had been treated at our institution from December 1990 to March 2008. True bacteremia was defined as a positive blood culture (>15 col

Microbiota of periapical lesions refractory to endodontic therapy.

The periapical microbiota of 36 teeth with refractory apical periodontitis was investigated. None of the teeth had responded to conventional endodontic or long-term (> 6 months), calcium-hydroxide treatment. Eight patients had received antibiotics systemically. After anaerobic culture, a total of 148 microbial strains were detected among 67 microbial species. One of the 36 lesions was culture-negative. Approximately half (51.0%) of the bacterial strains were anaerobic. Gram-positive species constituted 79.5% of the flora. Facultative organisms, such as Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Enterobacte

Outbreak of Bacillus cereus infections in a neonatal intensive care unit traced to balloons used in manual ventilation.

In 1998, an outbreak of systemic infections caused by Bacillus cereus occurred in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Three neonates developed sepsis with positive blood cultures. One neonate died, and the other two neonates recovered. An environmental survey, a prospective surveillance study of neonates, and a case control study were performed, in combination with molecular typing, in order to identify potential sources and transmission routes of infection. [Bacillary endophthalmitis. Four case reports].

PURPOSE: Bacillary endophthalmitis occurring after penetrating ocular trauma with an intraocular foreign body is always associated with poor visual outcome. Bacilli cause fulminant infection associated with tissue damage in the intraocular structures. CASE REPORTS: Our series consisted of four patients with penetrating ocular trauma and endophthalmitis caused by B. cereus or B. licheniformis. Three eyes ultimately developed phtisis. Only on eye recovered good vision (2.5/10 P4). DISCUSSION: Recommended early treatment includes topical, subconjunctival, parenteral antibiotics. A review of the

A patient with acute myeloid leukemia who developed fatal pneumonia caused by carbapenem-resistant Bacillus cereus.

Bacillus cereus is known as a serious bacterial pathogen in neutropenic patients. B. cereus is often resistant to beta-lactams, including penicillins and cephalosporins. We report a case of fatal pneumonia caused by B. cereus in a patient with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) during remission induction therapy. Cefepime was started for febrile neutropenia (FN) initially and was switched to panipem/betamipron, when fulminant pneumonia supervened. The isolated strain was resistant not only to cefepime but also to panipenem/betamipron. This is the first report of fulminant infection c

Food poisoning associated with emetic-type of Bacillus cereus in Korea.

Bacillus cereus can cause diarrheal and emetic types of food poisoning but little study has been done on emetic type of food poisoning in Korea. The objective of this study was to report on the emetic type of food poisoning associated with B. cereus in Korea. The toxin gene profile, toxin production, and antibiotic resistance of B. cereus isolates were investigated in this study. B. cereus was detected in three out of four samples, while the other food poisoning bacteria were not detected. All isolates (KUGH 10, 11, and 12) presented nhe A, B, and C diarrheal toxin genes (755, 743, and 683 bp)

Intestinal perforations in a premature infant caused by Bacillus cereus.

Although Bacillus cereus is a ubiquitous bacterium, the incidence of neonatal infections is very low with only a few cases of B. cereus infections in neonates reported in the literature. We report the case of a premature infant with multiple intestinal perforations and an abdominal B. cereus infection. The initial course was characterized by severe cardiovascular shock, anemia, thrombocytopenia and disseminated intravascular coagulation, leading to periventricular leukomalacia, alopecia capitis and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Expression and secretion of the protective antigen of Bacillus anthracis in Bacillus brevis.

We used the Bacillus brevis-pNU212 system to develop a mass production system for the protective antigen (PA) of Bacillus anthracis. A moderately efficient expression-secretion system for PA was constructed by fusing the PA gene from B. anthracis with the B. brevis cell-wall protein signal-peptide encoding region of pNU212, and by introducing the recombinant plasmid, pNU212-mPA, into B. brevis 47-5Q. The clone producing PA secreted about 300 microg of recombinant PA (rPA) per ml of 5PY-erythromycin medium after 4 days incubation at 30 degrees C. The rPA was fractionated from the culture supern
