Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is an autoimmune disease which is a type of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis that frequently affects the lungs and kidneys. However, GPA limited to a single organ has also been reported. A 71-year-old man was admitted for back pain and fever. We detected elevated levels of inflammatory markers and myeloperoxidase-ANCA. Magnetic resonance imaging indicated diffuse inflammation of the back and psoas muscles. Histology showed degenerated muscle fibers and granulomatosis vasculitis with mixed lymphoplasma cell infiltration. Hig

We investigated the extent to which an un-motorized, low-profile, elastic exosuit reduced the rate of fatigue for six lumbar extensor muscles during leaning. Six healthy subjects participated in an A-B-A (withdrawal design) study protocol, which involved leaning at 45º for up to 90 s without exosuit assistance (A1), then with assistance (B), then again without assistance (A2). The exosuit provided approximately 12-16 Nm of lumbar extension torque. We measured lumbar muscle activity (via surface electromyography) and assessed fatigue rate via median frequency slope. We found that five of the si

BACKGROUND: Low-back pain (LBP) is responsible for considerable personal suffering due to pain and reduced function, as well as the societal burden due to costs of health care and lost work productivity. For the vast majority of people with LBP, no specific anatomical cause can be reliably identified. For these people with non-specific LBP there are numerous treatment options, few of which have been shown to be effective in reducing pain and disability. The muscle energy technique (MET) is a treatment technique used predominantly by osteopaths, physiotherapists and chiropractors which involves

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of pelvic floor muscle exercise in patients with chronic low back pain.
METHODS: Adults (aged ≥ 18 years) with chronic low back pain (with or without radiculopathy) were randomized to undergo either routine treatment (ultrasonography, short wave diathermy and lumbar strengthening exercises; control group) or routine treatment with pelvic floor exercises (intervention group) for 24 weeks. Pain, disability (Oswestry Disability Index [ODI] score) and trunk muscle function were assessed at baseline and after completion of treatment.
RESULTS: The study included 47

There are conflicting findings in the literature regarding erector spinae activation imbalance in people with low-back pain (LBP). Some studies have found asymmetric recruitment between muscle pairs in people with LBP, whilst other studies have not; some reported people with LBP recruit more lumbar muscles whilst other have reported greater thoracic activity. Using 242 varsity athletes, EMG activity of thoracic and lumbar erector spinae pairs was recorded during an isometric trunk extension. Activation imbalance among muscle pairs and levels was compared between athletes with and without a his

The Authors take into consideration the telethermography of the soles of the feet in fifty-four patients suffering from troubles of the rachis and document the thermic asymmetries of the foot at rest: a static and dynamic load. We can find the above mentioned asymmetries also in patients with normal feet and traditional and normal podographies. If we assume a reflex arch parting from the propioceptors of the muscles of the plantar arch, we can make a type of sole that applied to the patients, normalize the muscular tensions of the back. We illustrate two cases treated with different methods bu

Back and leg complaints were studied by using a questionnaire and medical examination in 183 male conscripts and relating the results to background variables, anthropometry, the isometric strength of large muscle groups, and endurance running. A history of sciatica was reported by 8%, lumbago by 13%, back injury by 13% and low back insufficiency by 63%. Weak trunk extensors were associated with a history of sciatica, weak trunk flexors with back injuries and with current backache at work/exercise. Weak leg extensors showed associations with a history of low back insufficiency and of sick leave

Exploring the back muscle activity in chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients is crucial for the quantitative assessment of their neuromuscular function. However, hindered by the lack of stretchable, large-area electrode arrays capable of spanning the entire back, existing studies have primarily focused on the erector spinae and multifidus muscles in the lower back. Here, we report a large-area, stretchable high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) electrode array designed to cover both lower and upper back regions, enabling comprehensive characterization of back muscle activity in CLBP pa

Epidural abscesses are rare suppurative abscesses of the central nervous system that can expand and lead to severe neurologic complications and even death. Here we describe the case of a 68-year-old female who developed a spinal epidural abscess one month following cervical spinal decompression and fusion. The patient presented with decreased grip strength, flaccid paralysis of the lower extremities with hyporeflexia, urinary incontinence, and decreased sensation in the bilateral lower extremities. A cervical spine MRI revealed a large cervical spinal epidural abscess causing multilevel spinal

Yoga is effective for the management of chronic low back pain as it improves muscle strength and endurance. The objective of the current study was to assess trunk and hip muscle activation during Yoga poses usually prescribed for patients with chronic LBP. The study included 22 healthy Yoga trained subjects (mean age: 24.4 ± 2.6 years; 16 females, 6 males). The testing involved collecting surface electromyography data from Rectus Abdominis (RA) and Transverse Abdominis (TA), Gluteus Medius (GM), and Erector Spinae (ES) as subjects attained and held 16 different Yoga poses in standing, kneeling

In the past, in the study of special sports quality of heavy antagonistic sports events, the study of strength quality training was emphasized. The transformation of athletes' strength quality to special strength was highlighted, and the special exercises which tended to be consistent with the characteristics of wrestling events were added. However, in competition and training, athletes' spine bears a heavy load. Long-term static contraction of lumbar muscles can lead to excessive local load and injury of lumbar muscles. In this paper, the test results of athletes' joints are analyzed, and the
