Can oral anaerobic bacteria cause adverse pregnancy outcomes?

AIM: Maternal periodontal infection has been recognized as a risk factor for premature and low birthweight infants. It is suspected that pathogens causing periodontal disease may translocate to the amniotic cavity and so contribute to triggering an adverse pregnancy outcome. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the presence of specific periodontal pathogens may influence the incidence of preterm labor and premature birth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was designed as a hospital-based case-control study. A total of 70 pregnant women, aged 18-40 with single live pregnancy were recru

Adhesion of biodegradative anaerobic bacteria to solid surfaces.

In order to exploit the ability of anaerobic bacteria to degrade certain contaminants for bioremediation of polluted subsurface environments, we need to understand the mechanisms by which such bacteria partition between aqueous and solid phases, as well as the environmental conditions that influence partitioning. We studied four strictly anaerobic bacteria, Desulfomonile tiedjei, Syntrophomonas wolfei, Syntrophobacter wolinii, and Desulfovibrio sp. strain G11, which theoretically together can constitute a tetrachloroethylene- and trichloroethylene-dechlorinating consortium. Adhesion of these o

Beta-lactam resistance in anaerobic bacteria: a review.

The majority of the human microflora consists of anaerobic bacteria. Normally these bacteria have low pathogenicity, but under certain conditions, such as destruction of tissues and poor circulation or impaired host defense, they may cause serious infections. Bacteroides species are the most frequently isolated microorganisms from suppurative anaerobic infections and they have the broadest spectrum of resistance to the commonly used antimicrobial agents. Resistance to antimicrobial agents is an increasing problem, especially to beta-lactam compounds. Multiresistant clinical isolates, resistant

Role of anaerobic bacteria in aortofemoral graft infection.

A 10-year review of specimens of aortofemoral graft infection sent to the microbiology laboratory for cultures of anaerobic bacteria revealed the presence of these organisms in 13 of 16 specimens. Nineteen organisms (1.5 per patient) were isolated: 16 anaerobes and 3 aerobes. The predominant bacteria were anaerobic gram-positive cocci (six isolates), Propionibacterium acnes (five), and Bacteroides fragilis group (four). Polymicrobial infection was present in three patients, all with decubitus ulcers. Conditions predisposing to the infections were present in nine patients and included the prese

In vitro activity of imipenem against anaerobic bacteria.

The in vitro activity of imipenem, metronidazole, clindamycin, moxalactam, and cefoxitin against 203 strains of anaerobic bacteria isolated from patients at the Veterans Administration Wadsworth Medical Center in Los Angeles was studied. Imipenem and metronidazole were the most active agents overall, inhibiting 98% and 99%, respectively, of all anaerobes tested. At breakpoint levels all of the agents tested were very active against anaerobic cocci. Clostridium perfringens, and Bacteroides species other than those of the Bacteroides fragilis group. Imipenem, metronidazole, and clindamycin were

Gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobic bacteria in genital disease.

In a study of Gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobic bacteria in non-specific vaginitis (NSV) and other genital disease 89 patients attending a genital medicine clinic had vaginal samples examined for conventional pathogens and for quantitative analysis of G vaginalis and aerobic and anaerobic bacterial flora. The overall incidence of G vaginalis was 20%; G vaginalis (mean concentration 7.0 log10/g of secretion) occurred predominantly in patients with NSV (57%) but also in sexual contacts of non-specific urethritis (NSU) (37.5%) and in patients with other conditions (11.8%). G vaginalis is theref

Black-pigmented anaerobic bacteria associated with ovine periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a polymicrobial infectious disease that causes occlusion change, tooth loss, difficulty in rumination, and premature culling of animals. This study aimed to detect species of the genera Porphyromonas and Prevotella present in the periodontal pocket of sheep with lesions deeper than 5mm (n=14) and in the gingival sulcus of animals considered periodontally healthy (n=20). The presence of microorganisms was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using specific primers for Porphyromonas asaccharolytica, Porphyromonas endodontalis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Porphyromonas gula

Nitrite-driven anaerobic methane oxidation by oxygenic bacteria.

Only three biological pathways are known to produce oxygen: photosynthesis, chlorate respiration and the detoxification of reactive oxygen species. Here we present evidence for a fourth pathway, possibly of considerable geochemical and evolutionary importance. The pathway was discovered after metagenomic sequencing of an enrichment culture that couples anaerobic oxidation of methane with the reduction of nitrite to dinitrogen. The complete genome of the dominant bacterium, named 'Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera', was assembled. This apparently anaerobic, denitrifying bacterium encoded, tra

[Diffuse spontaneous cervical cellulitis caused by anaerobic bacteria].

Nine cases of diffusal cervical cellulitis due to anaerobes were analysed. Some of them had right away extensions (to the inferior mediastinum or to the face). From these cases, the authors argue their treatment protocol. Surgery was performed immediately after diagnosis, and associated with intensive management. The excision of the necrotic tissue and the aperture of all cervical spaces (particularly the floor to the buccal cavity and the prevertebral space) were made. The source of infection was looked for (most often this being the teeth) and treated at the same time. Bacteriologic aero and

Role of encapsulated anaerobic bacteria in synergistic infections.

The effect of encapsulation on the virulence, survival, and protection of anaerobic bacteria from phagocytosis is reviewed. Support for the importance of encapsulated Bacteroides sp. and anaerobic and facultative Gram-positive cocci (AFGPC) was provided by their higher recovery rate in oropharyngeal infections, compared to their number in the normal oral flora. Studies of the pathogenicity of anaerobic bacteria of the Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, and Clostridium genera and AFGPC are also presented. The organisms were inoculated into mice and their ability to induce subcutaneous abscesses was de

Isolation of capsulate anaerobic bacteria from orofacial abscesses.

The presence of capsulate Bacteroides spp. and anaerobic gram-positive cocci was investigated in pus specimens from 182 children with chronic orofacial infections or abscesses and in pharyngeal swabs from 26 children without inflammation. Of 216 Bacteroides spp. and anaerobic cocci isolated from clinical infections, 170 (79%) were capsulate, compared with 34 (35%) of 96 isolates from normal pharyngeal flora (p less than 0.001). The commonest organisms found to be capsulate more often from infected patients than from controls belonged to the B. melaninogenicus group. The possible evolution of e

Infective endocarditis due to anaerobic and microaerophilic bacteria.

Seven cases of infective endocarditis (IE) due to anaerobic or microaerophilic bacteria were seen in a period of 42 months at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital (Downey, California), representing 10.6 percent of the total number of 66 cases that carried the diagnosis of IE. Five of the 66 patients had polymicrobial endocarditis. Three of five patients with polymicrobial endocarditis had at least one anaerobic or microaerophilic microorganism isolated from the blood, and all five patients practiced intravenous drug abuse. Six of the seven patients with anaerobic or microaerophilic IE were women. The th

The possible role of anaerobic bacteria in chronic prostatitis.

Prostatis, the most common urological disease in men, afflicts between 25 and 50% of all adult men. Four clinical categories are recognized: acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis, non-bacterial prostatitis and prostatodynia. The role of Gram-positive aerobic bacteria and the different anaerobes in chronic bacterial prostatitis is still a matter of debate. During this study, the urethral discharge and the prostatic fluid obtained after prostatic massage of 50 patients with chronic prostatitis, confirmed by clinical examination and resistant to empirical quinolone therapy, were cultured under
