Host Diversity and Origin of Zoonoses: The Ancient and the New.

Bacterial, viral, and parasitic zoonotic diseases are transmitted to humans from a wide variety of animal species that act as reservoir hosts for the causative organisms. Zoonoses contribute an estimated 75% of new or reemerging infectious diseases in humans. All groups of mammals have been shown to act as hosts for transmission of different organisms that cause zoonoses, followed in importance by birds; with both wild and domestic species identified as hosts in specific cases. There has been considerable research progress leading to a better understanding of the host range, animal origin, evo

[Direct detection of the brucellosis-causing pathogen--a case report].

Bacterial zoonoses still represent a serious medical problem. One of the less frequent but severe zoonoses is brucellosis caused by the bacterium Brucella melitensis. The presented case report describes relapsing imported brucellosis in a young male. In addition to four serological tests, the diagnosis was confirmed by direct detection of the pathogen in blood culture. The isolate of Brucella melitensis was identified using the MALDI-TOF BioTyper method and subsequently also by PCR.

Travel-associated zoonotic bacterial diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Bacterial zoonoses are increasingly described in association with travel. Some bacterial zoonoses constitute important causes of post-travel illness. We focus on leptospirosis and rickettsiosis - the most common travel-associated bacterial zoonoses. RECENT FINDINGS: Leptospirosis is regarded to be the most common zoonotic disease worldwide. In industrialized countries recreational exposures, both domestic and overseas, are increasingly becoming a major source of infection. Asymptomatic infection is rare among travelers. Rickettsial diseases account for approximately 1.5-3.5

Zoonotic pathogens and diseases detected in Vietnam, 2020-2021.

Vietnam has been identified as a country at high-risk for emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic diseases. The government of Vietnam recognized five priority zoonoses, including highly pathogenic avian influenza, rabies, leptospirosis, anthrax, and Streptococcus suis, and established a framework for One Health investigation and response to these diseases. From July 2020 to February 2021, quantitative data of zoonoses were collected from an online survey in 61 of 63 provinces based on either clinical diagnosis or laboratory confirmation. The responses were followed up by using in-depth intervie

Zoonotic infections as causes of hospitalization among febrile Bedouin patients in southern Israel.

A prospective 12-month study was conducted throughout 1998 to determine the frequency of selected bacterial zoonoses as causes of fever among hospitalized Bedouins in southern Israel. One or more zoonoses were diagnosed in 30 (27%) of 110 patients admitted with fever. Brucellosis was diagnosed in 9 (8%), rickettsial infections in 20 (18%), and ehrlichiosis in 2 (2%), one of whom had also evidence of rickettsial spotted fever infection. None of the patients was diagnosed with Q fever. Compared with patients without zoonoses, patients with zoonoses were younger (P = 0.01), fewer of them had unde

[Estimates of the spatial distribution of the relative risk of mortality of the main zoonoses in Chile: Chagas disease, hydatidosis, Hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome and leptospirosis].

BACKGROUND: Zoonoses are infections caused by all types of etiological transmissible agents from vertebrate animals to humans. During the last decades, the risk to health caused by different zoonoses has been a consequence of the natural distribution of the different etiological agents and by the emergence and reemergence of these diseases. AIM: To study the distribution of the risk of mortality of the four main zoonoses in continental Chile, based on national mortality data, with the objective of visualizing geographically where to focus the control efforts of these diseases. METHODS: Relat

[Infections transmitted from cats and dogs].

The risk of zoonose transmitted from cats and dogs has increased as these animals have been more and more included in family life to become real household members. This paper reviews the main bacterial, parasitic, viral and fungal infections that could be transmitted to humans by these pet animals in different situations. Although the risk of human disease is relatively low for most of the presented infections, its recognition is important to prevent some exposures, to apply correct prophylactic measures after bites, and to include these zoonoses in the differential diagnosis in case of illnes

Emerging zoonoses: the "one health approach".

Zoonoses represent a public health risk recently pointed out by the spreading of previously unknown human infectious diseases emerging from animal reservoirs such as severe acute respiratory syndrome and avian influenza caused by H5N1-virus. These outbreaks have shown that animal breeding activities can pose a significant public health risk. Until now, the risk of zoonoses has probably been underestimated, particularly in occupational settings. The emergence or re-emergence of bacterial (Mycobacterium bovis and Brucella spp) or viral (hepatitis E virus) infections shows that zoonoses should be

Crossing institutional boundaries: mapping the policy process for improved control of endemic and neglected zoonoses in sub-Saharan Africa.

The recent adoption of the World Health Assembly Resolution 66.12 for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in May 2013 is an important turning point for advocacy regarding a number of endemic zoonotic infections, defined by the World Health Organization as the neglected zoonotic diseases (NZDs). In addition to NTD-listed zoonoses such as rabies, echinococcosis (hydatid disease), leishmaniasis, Human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) and Taenia solium cysticercosis, the NZDs also include important bacterial zoonoses such as anthrax, bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis. To date, analysis

An Update in Knowledge of Pigs as the Source of Zoonotic Pathogens.

The available data indicate that the human world population will constantly grow in the subsequent decades. This constant increase in the number of people on the Earth will lead to growth in food demand, especially in food of high nutritional value. Therefore, it is expected that the world livestock population will also increase. Such a phenomenon enhances the risk of transmitting pathogens to humans. As pig production is one of the most significant branches of the world's livestock production, zoonoses of porcine origins seem to be of particular importance. Therefore, in this review, we aim t

Zoonoses acquired from pet birds.

The diagnosis, treatment, pathology, and epidemiology of psittacosis, the principal zoonotic disease contractible from birds, in human beings and in birds is discussed at length. Salmonellosis, toxoplasmosis, and allergic alveolitis are also considered. Several bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic organisms are mentioned as potential zoonoses.

First report of multiple Rickettsia sp., Anaplasma sp., and Ehrlichia sp. in the San Miguel Department of El Salvador from zoonotic tick vectors.

Neglected bacterial zoonoses are a group of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) that are commonly underdiagnosed and underreported due to their undifferentiated febrile illness symptomology. Spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFGR), a subset of tick-borne bacterial zoonoses, belong in this group. There is a dichotomy in the reporting and recognition of these pathogens in Central America: countries with reduced human development scores-like El Salvador-have little to no research or surveillance dedicated to these pathogens and the diseases they cause. This was the third-ever tick survey in El Sa

Etiology of severe non-malaria febrile illness in Northern Tanzania: a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The syndrome of fever is a commonly presenting complaint among persons seeking healthcare in low-resource areas, yet the public health community has not approached fever in a comprehensive manner. In many areas, malaria is over-diagnosed, and patients without malaria have poor outcomes. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We prospectively studied a cohort of 870 pediatric and adult febrile admissions to two hospitals in northern Tanzania over the period of one year using conventional standard diagnostic tests to establish fever etiology. Malaria was the clinical diagnosis for 528 (60.7%), but

Transmission of flea-borne zoonotic agents.

Flea-borne zoonoses such as plague (Yersinia pestis) and murine typhus (Rickettsia typhi) caused significant numbers of human cases in the past and remain a public health concern. Other flea-borne human pathogens have emerged recently (e.g., Bartonella henselae, Rickettsia felis), and their mechanisms of transmission and impact on human health are not fully understood. Our review focuses on the ecology and epidemiology of the flea-borne bacterial zoonoses mentioned above with an emphasis on recent advancements in our understanding of how these organisms are transmitted by fleas, maintained in

Feline-Human Zoonosis Transmission in North Africa: A Systematic Review.

Throughout human history, domestic animal species have represented a unique zoonotic disease risk for the transmission of pathogens ranging from viral, bacterial, parasitic, and fungal. In North Africa, cats have a particularly long record and occupy a specialized niche within many communities. This systematic review was conducted to analyze the current and historical literature documenting the breadth and variety of zoonoses in North Africa, specifically relating to the domesticated feline. Multiple electronic databases were searched on January 16, 2019, for published reports on feline zoonos

Emerging and Re-Emerging Zoonoses of Dogs and Cats.

Since the middle of the 20th century, pets are more frequently considered as "family members" within households. However, cats and dogs still can be a source of human infection by various zoonotic pathogens. Among emerging or re-emerging zoonoses, viral diseases, such as rabies (mainly from dog pet trade or travel abroad), but also feline cowpox and newly recognized noroviruses or rotaviruses or influenza viruses can sicken our pets and be transmitted to humans. Bacterial zoonoses include bacteria transmitted by bites or scratches, such as pasteurellosis or cat scratch disease, leading to seve

Crop protection practices and risks associated with infectious tropical parasitic diseases.

Two recent literature reviews have shown that: i) agroecological crop protection (ACP) practices generally reduce risks of viral zoonoses, unlike conventional (agrochemical-based) practices which tend to increase them; ii) substitution-based crop protection (CP) practices (mainly biocontrol-based) could result in fewer health risks from bacterial infectious diseases. Here, we present an analysis of the scientific literature to determine to what extent the conclusions regarding viruses or bacteria can be extended to infectious diseases caused by protozoan or helminthic parasites. This analysis
