Orbital abscess secondary to acute dacryocystitis: case report.

Acute dacryocystitis usually induces preseptal infection. In rare instances the infection that is confined to the lacrimal sac can extend to the orbital contents resulting in orbital cellulitis. We present a case of intraconal abscess secondary to acute dacryocystitis and review the literature of orbital cellulitis resulting from acute lacrimal sac infection.

Soft-tissue abscess involving Actinomyces odontolyticus and two Prevotella species in an intravenous drug abuser.

Skin and soft-tissue infections in intravenous users comprise a variety of microorganisms and anaerobic bacteria are frequently involved in these suppurative infections. A case of subcutaneous abscess into anterior femoral muscles involving Actinomyces odontolyticus and two Prevotella species (Prevotella buccae and Prevotella melaninogenica) in an intravenous drug abuser is presented. This combination of microorganisms has not previously been described in soft-tissue infections. The patient volunteering that he licked his hypodermic needle prior to cocaine injection supports that the implicati

[Clinical and bacteriological features of six cases with intracranial abscess in childhood].

From October 1988 to March 2001, 5 patients with 6 episodes of intracranial abscesses were admitted to Chiba-Children's Hospital. Average age when they were admitted was 10 years and 1 month. Initial clinical symptoms were fever in 5 cases, and headache in 1 case. It took 21 days from the appearance of the initial symptoms to diagnose the intracranial abscess. Four out of 5 patients had underlying diseases that were prone to cause intracranial abscess. Two patients of these were cyanotic congenital heart diseases (tetralogy of Fallot and asplenic heart), and the other 2 were sinusitis. Compute

Endobronchial ultrasound guided transbronchial needle aspiration leading to cardiac empyema and tamponade by Prevotella oris.

Endobronchial ultrasound guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TNBA) is widely recommended for the diagnosis of mediastinal lymphadenopathy of malignant and non-malignant aetiology. EBUS-TBNA is preferred over mediastinoscopy as it has a better diagnostic accuracy and safety, is cost-effective and less invasive. Major complications of EBUS-TBNA include bleeding, mediastinitis, pneumonia, mediastinal abscess, empyema, lung abscess, pericarditis, pneumothorax, and rarely pericardial tamponade. We report a patient who developed pericardial empyema and tamponade due to Prevotella oris foll

Suppurative otitis and ascending meningoencephalitis associated with Bacteroides tectus and Porphyromonas gulae in a captive Parma wallaby (Macropus parma) with toxoplasmosis.

A 6-year-old female Parma wallaby (Macropus parma) at a zoo in California developed acute ataxia and left-sided circling. Despite intensive care, clinical signs progressed to incoordination and prostration, and the animal was euthanized. At necropsy, the left tympanic cavity was filled with homogeneous suppurative exudate that extended into the cranium expanding the meninges and neuroparenchyma in the lateral and ventral aspect of the caudal ipsilateral brainstem and medulla oblongata. Microscopically, the brainstem showed regional severe suppurative meningoencephalitis with large numbers of n

[Laboratory diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis].

Microbiological analysis of discharge from the genitals in passenger car conductors (5787 women and 1496 men aged 20 to 40) showed Gardnerella vaginalis to be the most frequent agent of urogenital infection. It was isolated in 26% cases, whereas Trichomonas were isolated in 2.5%, fungi in 1.5%, and gonococci in 0.27% cases. The diagnosis of gardnerellosis is reliable if the key cells are found. Monoinfection with G. vaginalis was diagnosed in 80% patients, the overwhelming majority (74%) of carriers of this bacterium had no inflammatory symptoms, and in only 26% the carrier state was associate

Gastrointestinal microbial population of turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) affected by hemorrhagic enteritis virus.

Hemorrhagic enteritis (HE) is an acute viral disease that affects avian species, particularly turkeys, compromising their commercial production and having a negative effect on animal welfare. Turkey adenovirus 3 (TAdV-3), is the main causal agent of the disease. In this study, we considered 3 groups of turkeys to achieve 2 purposes: 1) A preliminary investigation on the microbiota content in the 4 parts of healthy turkey's intestine (group A), namely duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and ceca was done; 2) an investigation on the relationship between natural infections with TAdV-3 and the intestinal mi

Impact of dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis on the metabolic profiles and microbial ecology of weanling pigs experimentally infected with a pathogenic Escherichia coli.

BACKGROUND: Our previous study demonstrated that dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis enhanced growth performance and intestinal integrity in weaned pigs challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). Therefore, this study aimed to explore the impact of Bacillus subtilis on gut health and its role in modulating host-microbe interactions in post-weaning pigs. RESULTS: ETEC infection disrupted key metabolic pathways in distal colon, including glutathione, beta-alanine, and pyrimidine metabolism, indicating increased oxidative stress, impaired nucleotide balance, and amino acid

Deciphering the toxicological role of Porphyromonas gingivalis derived endotoxins in liver diseases.

Periodontitis is a most prevalent and infectious multifactorial inflammatory disease and is characterized by the progressive destruction of the tooth-supporting tissues. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a Gram‑negative oral anaerobe, mainly causes periodontitis and it is one of the most important risk factors responsible for aggravation of existing systemic diseases. Several experimental and clinical studies have shown the positive association between periodontitis and different forms of liver disease. Periodontal diseases increase the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases and cirrhosis. I

Invasion of Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells by Porphyromonas gingivalis leading to Vacuolar/Cytosolic localization and Autophagy dysfunction In-Vitro.

Recent epidemiological  studies link Periodontal disease(PD) to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We documented earlier that Porphyromonas gingivalis(Pg), keystone oral-pathobiont, causative of PD, efficiently invades human gingival epithelial and blood-dendritic cells. Here, we investigated the ability of dysbiotic Pg-strains to invade human-retinal pigment epithelial cells(ARPE-19), their survival, intracellular localization, and the pathological effects, as dysfunction of RPEs leads to AMD. We show that live, but not heat-killed Pg-strains adhere to and invade ARPEs. This involves ear

A rare case of pleural effusion due to Prevotella dentalis.

Prevotella dentalis is a Gram-negative anaerobic rod involved in various human diseases, especially oral infections. We report a rare case of a pleural effusion due to this microorganism in an elderly patient. An 88-year-old man with chronic respiratory disease presented with a left pleural effusion for more than 1 month. Culture of drained pleural fluid resulted in isolation of P. dentalis. Resistance to penicillin and moxifloxacin was documented. Treatment with drainage and clindamycin was established, but the patient developed cognitive impairment and died after a worsening of his general c

Detrimental effects of specific Periodontopathic bacterial infection on tachyarrhythmia compared to Bradyarrhythmia.

BACKGROUND: Tachyarrhythmia (TA) and bradyarrhythmia (BA) are cardiac rhythm disorders that result in the decline of quality of life. While patients with periodontitis are at a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), little causal information between TA and BA has been provided to date. To assess the relationship, periodontal bacterial infection in patients with TA or BA was evaluated. METHODS: The subjects were patients with TA (n = 98) or BA (n = 40) who attended Tokyo Medical and Dental University hospital. Periodontal and blood examinations were performed. Role of Porphyromonas gingivalis HmuY in Immunopathogenesis of Chronic Periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease, with participation of bacterial, environmental, and host factors. It results from synergistic and dysbiotic multispecies microorganisms, critical "keystone pathogens," affecting the whole bacterial community. The purpose of this study was to review the role of Porphyromonas gingivalis in the immunopathogenesis of chronic periodontitis, with special attention paid to HmuY. The host response during periodontitis involves the innate and adaptive immune system, leading to chronic inflammation and progressive destruction of tooth-supporting tissues. In thi

Ecology of genus Porphyromonas in canine periodontal disease.

Asaccharolytic pigmented Porphyromonas species, including P. endodontalis, P. gingivalis, P. circumdentaria and unclassified species, were isolated from the plaque of adult dogs, but not from any oral sites of puppies and adolescent dogs. With age-dependency, the proportion of Porphyromonas species in the flora of plaque increased. Isolation of the genus Porphyromonas was clearly associated with the progress of periodontol disease. We suggested that Porphyromonas is the exogenous organism and obligate pathogen for canine periodontal diseases.

Severe sepsis caused by Mobiluncus curtisii subsp. curtisii in a previously healthy female: case report and review.

We present the case of a 54-year-old female with life-threatening septicaemia due to Mobiluncus curtisii subsp. curtisii. Her admission was complicated by septic shock, renal failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, the adult respiratory distress syndrome and spontaneous splenic rupture. The patient survived with full intensive care support and intravenous ceftriaxone. Extra-genital infection with Mobiluncus species is rarely diagnosed and has been confined to breast abscesses and non-life-threatening bacteraemia. A review of extra-genital infections with Mobiluncus species is presente

Diagnosis and therapy of anaerobic infections in childhood.

There are two main periods of manifestation of anaerobic infections in childhood. In the neonatal period anaerobic septicaemia is usually mild with a lower mortality rate, but has essentially the same causes as aerobic septicaemia (premature rupture of the membranes, amniotic infection syndrome after ascending infection). The latter cases comprise about 10% of aerobic septicaemias. Later in childhood, the pathogenesis of anaerobic infections is similar to that in adulthood. Anaerobic infections occur after surgery, particularly of the abdominal region, in malignancies, immunodeficiency and asp

From Periodontal Pocket to Systemic Diseases: Mechanistic Insights Into the Role of Porphyromonas gingivalis in Host Pathology.

Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), a keystone pathogen in periodontitis, has been increasingly recognised as a mechanistic bridge linking periodontal infection to pathological destruction in distant organs. P. gingivalis virulence factors, including gingipains, lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), mediate complex host-pathogen interactions. In this review, we critically evaluated recent experimental studies which demonstrate the effects of P. gingivalis oral infection on systemic diseases, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes mellitus (DM), adverse

Intraluminal gas in deep vein thrombosis associated with Rhodotorula mucilaginosa fungemia and Prevotella intermedia bacteremia: a unique clinical case report and literature overview.

Intravenous drug use (IVDU) is associated with multiple complications, including thrombus and infection with rare pathogens. Here, we present a unique case of septic thrombophlebitis with gas present within the lumen of the thrombus that was identified from an otherwise unassuming wound via point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). In conjunction with past literature, this finding raises the possibility of POCUS detection of intraluminal gas as a sensitive indicator of septic thrombophlebitis. Furthermore, the patient's polymicrobial infection with Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Prevotella intermedia ex

From a better knowledge of periodontal disease to Porphyromonas gingivalis target for rheumatoid arthritis disease activity.

Periodontal disease (PD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are both inflammatory diseases affecting the tooth and joint, with local inflammation associated with bone loss. Bacterial infections by oral bacteria are involved in periodontal inflammation, and the best known to be associated with PD is Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg). A large body of recent data suggests a strong involvement of this specific bacteria, Pg, in PD outcomes, but also in RA. The aim of this review is to discuss the association between PD and Pg, RA and its mechanisms, and to determine whether targeting Pg bacteria could impro
