Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis caused severe, nonhemorrhagic, watery diarrhea when 10(9) CFU of a porcine or human isolate was administered orogastrically to 3-day-old rabbits. The bacterium colonized the intestinal tract with a predilection for the large intestine (10(9) CFU/g of cecal contents). Diarrhea occurred at an average of 4.6 days postinoculation, and 84% of rabbits were dead or moribund at an average of 8.8 days postinoculation. The disease was characterized by watery diarrhea and dehydration. Severe histologic lesions including inflammation, exfoliation of epithelial cells, a

The antimicrobial capacity of amniotic fluid (AF) against B. fragilis, group B streptococci and Escherichia coli, the latter as a reference indicator, was investigated in samples from 30 patients. In order to study trimester as well as individual variations in the antibacterial activity, 10 individual samples from each trimester of pregnancy (AF1, AF2, AF3), were separately tested. With B. fragilis all trimester samples showed initial inhibition lasting for 8 h, the bacteria then regaining growth capacity in all AF1, and the majority of AF2 and AF3 specimens. However, 4 AF2 and 3 AF3 samples s

The present study aimed to determine the carbapenem resistance among Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) isolated from patients candidates to colonoscopy in Shiraz, Iran. A total of 201 stool samples were gathered from 201 patients. The detection of B. fragilis group, B. fragilis, and ETBF was performed using a PCR assay targeting bfg, 16S rRNA, and bft genes, respectively. The enterotoxin isotype-encoding genes (bft-1, bft-2, and bft-3) were detected in ETBF using a PCR assay. Antimicrobial susceptibility profile of ETBF against imipenem and meropenem was determined using the Liofilch

Bartonella henselae is able to internalize endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), which are resistant to the infection of other common pathogens. Bacteroides fragilis is a gram-negative anaerobe belonging to the gut microflora. It protects from experimental colitis induced by Helicobacter hepaticus through the polysaccharide A (PSA). The aim of our study was to establish: 1) whether B. fragilis colonization could protect from B. henselae infection; if this event may have beneficial effects on EPCs, vascular system and tissues. Our in vitro results establish for the first time that B. fragilis ca

A case is reported of Bacteroides fragilis bacteremia from an obstructed upper urinary tract. Although anaerobic bacteria rarely cause significatn urinary tract infection it may occur, particularly in the presence of obstruction. The urinary tract must be considered a possible site for anaerobic infections.

Resistance to clindamycin, erythromycin, streptogramins, and tetracycline was shown to be transferable from a clinical isolate of Bacteroides fragilis subspecies distasonis to a sensitive strain of B. fragilis subspecies fragilis. Resistance to clindamycin, erythromycin, and streptogramins was transferable from a clinical isolate of B. fragilis subspecies fragilis to the sensitive strain of B. fragilis subspecies fragilis. Except for tetracycline, resistance to all of these antibiotics was spontaneously curable en bloc at a frequency of approximately 10(-2). These results suggest that resistan

Bacteroides fragilis, a prominent commensal of the human gut microbiota, plays a vital role in immune system regulation through its capsular polysaccharide A (PSA), which requires a glycolipid anchor structurally reminiscent of lipid A. While canonical Escherichia coli lipid A acts as a potent TLR4 agonist contributing to septic shock and inflammatory disorders, certain B. fragilis-derived glycolipids demonstrate antagonistic effects, offering potential as anti-inflammatory agents. In this study, we report the synthesis and preliminary computational evaluation of a library of glycolipids inspi

BACKGROUND Bacteroides fragilis (B. fragilis) is an uncommon cause of native joint septic arthritis (NJSA). It is an anaerobic gram-negative rod that is normally found in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary system, and skin, and thus is rarely isolated from the musculoskeletal system. Risk factors for B. fragilis NJSA include inflammatory arthritis, malignancy, sickle cell disease, and ischemic heart disease. CASE REPORT We discuss a case of a 65-year-old man with coronary artery disease, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and gout, who presented with 5 days of right kne

The Bacteroides fragilis (B. fragilis) produce biofilm for colonisation in the intestinal tract can cause a series of inflammatory reactions due to B. fragilis toxin (BFT) which can lead to chronic intestinal inflammation and tissue injury and play a crucial role leading to colorectal cancer (CRC). The enterotoxigenic B. fragilis (ETBF) forms biofilm and produce toxin and play a role in CRC, whereas the non-toxigenic B. fragilis (NTBF) does not produce toxin. The ETBF triggers the expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 that releases PGE2 for inducing inflammation and control cell proliferation.

Bacterial infection is a rare cause of pericarditis especially in the post-antibiotic era. When compared to viral or idiopathic etiologies, purulent pericarditis carries a higher risk for complications. While most cases are due to Staphylococcus aureus, we present a rare case of pericarditis due to Bacteroides fragilis originating from a liver abscess and leading to pericardial effusion. Our case highlights the need to maintain a high clinical suspicion of bacterial infection when patients present with sepsis and have evidence of pericarditis.

Bacteroides fragilis, an intestinal flora commensal microorganism, is frequently isolated from abscesses and soft tissue infections. This study aimed to identify pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) involved in B. fragilis recognition and to characterize the induced cytokine profile. Human PBMCs were stimulated with heat-killed B. fragilis and cytokine levels were determined by ELISA. Roles of individual PRRs were assessed using specific blockers of receptor signaling pathways and PBMCs carrying single nucleotide polymorphisms of PRR genes. Cell lines expressing human TLR2 or TLR4 were employe

Bacteroides species and Enterobacteriaceae are known to cause synergistic infections. However, the mechanisms behind this synergy are not completely understood. Several authors have shown that Bacteroides species may inhibit the phagocytosis of Enterobacteriaceae by polymorphonuclear leukocytes as well as by macrophages. With the present study we have addressed the question of whether Bacteroides fragilis (BF) is also capable of suppressing specific immune functions. When incubated together with murine lymphocytes, BF significantly inhibited the blastogenic transformation of these cells stimul

A nationwide susceptibility survey of the Bacteroides fragilis group was continued at New England Medical Center in 1983. A total of 555 strains were obtained from eight centers in the United States. In addition to the nine antimicrobial agents studied in the two previous years, three other agents were added to the evaluation: cefamandole, cefuroxime, and cefonicid. The results for the strains tested with the original nine drugs in 1983 were compared with those for 1,292 isolates tested in 1981 and 1982. The most active beta-lactam drug was piperacillin, which had an 8% resistance rate. Cefoxi

A neonate monitored with scalp electrodes during delivery presented with a scalp abscess, osteomyelitis and bacteremia. Bacteroides fragilis was recovered from the blood culture, and polymicrobial aerobic and anaerobic flora were isolated from the aspirated purulent material. Attention should be paid to the possibility of such complications in infants requiring fetal monitoring.

A mixed infection of Bacteroides fragilis and Fusobacterium necrophorum was resistant to treatment with penicillin even though a pure F. necrophorum infection could be successfully treated with penicillin. Since B. fragilis alone did not produce infection, these results indicate that B. fragilis can protect F. necrophorum from penicillin in vivo. The extent of protection afforded by a strain of B. fragilis was related to its level of resistance to penicillin. Only a few cells of B. fragilis were required in the initial bacterial injection. Moreover, protection was demonstrated when B. fragilis

Several factors affect the composition of species that inhabit our intestinal tract, including mode of delivery, genetics and nutrition. Antimicrobial peptides and proteins secreted in the gastrointestinal tract are powerful tools against bacteria. Lactoferrin (LF) inhibits the growth of several bacterial species, such as Enterobacteriaceae, but may stimulate probiotic bacteria. Activity of LF against gut symbiotic species of the Bacteroides genus could give us insights on how these species colonize the gut. We investigated the effects of the antimicrobial protein lactoferrin and its derived p

Gut dysbiosis has been implicated in epilepsy, yet probiotic efficacy and mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we identify that Bacteroides fragilis (B. fragilis) is markedly reduced in children with epilepsy and show that oral B. fragilis administration suppresses seizures in both pentylenetetrazole- and kainic-acid-induced mouse models. Mechanistically, B. fragilis activates colonic choline acetyltransferase-positive (ChAT+) cells and enhances gut-vagus-brain cholinergic signaling, as demonstrated by vagal recordings, pharmacological blockade, and chemogenetic manipulation, identifying a colonic

Bacteriodes fragilis is an anaerobic bacterium found in the human intestinal flora. In this study, BfEno was targeted with a structure-based drug design approach because inhibition of this enzyme may prevent both the aerobic and anaerobic pathways due to its role in the glycolytic pathway. First, the gene encoding BfEno was cloned, expressed and the protein produced over 95% purity. The Km and Vmax values of BfEno were determined as 314.9 µM and 256.2 µmol/min.mg, respectively. Drug-like chemicals were retrieved from the ZINC database for high-throughput virtual screening analyses. As a result
