Jasenovac was a camp run by the Ustaše Supervisory Service (UNS) of the Independent State of Croatia during World War II. It was located approximately 100 km south-east of Zagreb on the banks of the Sava River. Sylvatic rabies has been eradicated from most of Central Europe, but cases still occur in the Balkans. Oral rabies vaccination of foxes is an effective method for controlling the disease. Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is a form of interstitial nephritis seen only in certain geographical areas in the Balkan peninsula. Since ochratoxin A (OTA) was discovered, it has been ubiquitous as a natural contaminant of moldy food and feed. BACKGROUND: Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is seen in certain regions of the Balkan Peninsula. The patients are predisposed to epithelial cell tumors of the urinary tract. These tumors have not been genetically investigated so far.
METHODS: We studied the loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in three BEN-associated tumors at seven microsatellite loci at 3q21.3 - 3q27.3. Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) was also done and one of the tumors was investigated by 24-color FISH as well.
