BACKGROUND: High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) enables visualization of erosions and vascular channels (VCs); however, precise characterization of VCs remains challenging. Barium sulfate, an established contrast agent for microvascular imaging, may enhance VC detection on HR-pQCT. However, no study has systematically investigated barium-filled vessels in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using both histology and HR-pQCT.
METHODS: We examined the 2nd and 3rd metacarpophalangeal joints from a deceased patient with RA, which were perfused with barium sulfate, scanned u

Barium studies are essential to the diagnostic work-up, especially in dysphagia, heartburn (dyspepsia), or gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). The barium swallow test, or esophagram, is essential in investigating patients with abnormalities within the esophagus. The barium sulfate used is inert to the gastrointestinal tract and causes no harm. However, problems begin when the contrast agent enters the trachea and then into the lungs. The author herein presents a case of barium aspiration in a 60 years old Indian male being investigated for the cause of dysphagia. In this case, the paradox was the

Radiographic studies are used within healthcare on a routine basis to aid in the diagnosis and management of patients with a variety of health conditions. Barium sulfate is a contrast agent that may be used to enhance certain imaging studies. Although barium-contrasted studies are generally safe, they are not without risk for complications. Barium impactions, and their management, are infrequently reported in scientific literature. We present a case of a patient with barium impaction who presented at the emergency room after a fall from standing with associated symptoms of abdominal pain, weak

The Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS) is a videofluoroscopic examination of the anatomy and physiology involved in swallowing. Like other fluoroscopic examinations, the MBSS uses ionizing radiation with related radiation risks. Thus, the procedures and protocols related to MBSSs must balance the benefit of the diagnostic information gained with the risk of radiation exposure. This requires complex decision-making for any given clinician but becomes complicated due to the interprofessional nature of conducting MBSSs, namely the direct involvement of both the speech-language pathologist and r

Barium sulfate is widely used for gastroenterology imaging. Retention of barium in the appendix, where it acts as an appendicolith, thereby leading to obstruction and inflammation. Barium-associated appendicitis is a very rare complication of upper gastrointestinal imaging (UGI), especially in children. We present a case involving an 8-year-old girl who was diagnosed with acute appendicitis due to a barolith and required a laparoscopic appendectomy 6 weeks after UGI. After UGI, patients should be informed regarding possible retention of barium in the appendix, which can cause acute appendiciti

Barium peritonitis is a rare but serious complication caused by leakage of barium sulfate into the peritoneal cavity during gastrointestinal contrast studies. It carries high mortality and often necessitates surgical intervention. A 33-year-old female developed chemical peritonitis following a barium loopogram performed during her ileostomy reversal workup. Imaging revealed pneumoperitoneum and intra-abdominal collections due to barium spillage. Despite radiological findings, she remained clinically stable with only localized symptoms. Conservative management was pursued with intravenous antib

"Bariolith" is defined as the concretion of barium sulfate in the intestine after performing a radiological study with said contrast. Complications derived from the use of barium are exceptional, but appendicitis, intussusception, volvulus, ulceration, ischemia and perforation have been described. We present the case of a 62 years old woman, who underwent a EGD exploration on the 15th of January 2021 as a part of her study for suspected GERD.

Water desalination using membrane technology is one of the main technologies to resolve water pollution and scarcity issues. In the membrane treatment process, mineral scale deposition and fouling is a severe challenge that can lead to filtration efficiency decrease, permeate quality compromise, and even membrane damage. Multiple methods have been developed to resolve this problem, such as scale inhibitor addition, product recovery ratio adjustment, periodic membrane surface flushing. The performance of these methods largely depends on the ability to accurately predict the kinetics of mineral

A study of the communicating veins between the venous plexuses of the pelvic organs was performed on 21 female cadavers. Thirteen cadavers were studied radiologically after being injected with barium sulfate and 8 were examined after injection of a plastic material. Two groups of communicating veins could be recognized: rectovaginal and vaginovesical; their anatomic features are described. The communicating veins were unidirectional; they transmitted the dye from the rectal to the vaginovesical plexuses, but not in the reverse direction. A new concept was proposed to explain the high Escherich

The administration to albino rats of tannic acid as a retention enema (in doses of 0.2 g./kg. body weight and over) prolonged the duration of anesthesia induced by thiopental given immediately before, or 72 hours after, the tannic acid. This dose of tannic acid corresponds, on the basis of body weight, to a radiodiagnostic enema of 2 1. of 0.25% tannic acid in barium sulfate suspension given to a child weighing 25 kg. By excluding certain hypothermic effects of tannic acid, it was concluded that thiopental potentiation was probably due to impairment by the tannic acid of the liver's ability to

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of barium-rice administration for a standardized diagnosis of dysphagia and esophageal motility disorders.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty healthy volunteers and 218 patients with various esophageal disorders (achalasia, scleroderma and other connective tissue diseases, neurologic diseases, esophagitis and others) were examined both by a conventional barium study and by a barium-rice study. The barium-rice meal consisted of barium sulfate and boiled rice, mixed half and half. The time required for esophageal clearance of one sip was measured.
RESULTS: Normal esopha

Barium sulfate is widely used as a radiographic contrast medium in upper gastrointestinal barium X-ray radiography for cancer screening in Japan. Although generally considered safe, rare complications such as bowel obstruction due to impacted barium stools can occur. We report the case of a healthy 41-year-old woman who developed colonic obstruction following upper gastrointestinal barium X-ray radiography. Endoscopic treatment was attempted using a snare and a long hood to fragment and remove the barium mass. The impacted stools were successfully removed endoscopically, and there were no seri

Soluble barium salts including barium carbonate, nitrate, acetate, and chloride are commonly used in the manufacture of ceramics, insecticides, and rodenticides. Soluble barium salts are highly toxic to humans if ingested. Acute soluble barium poisoning is an uncommon but life-threatening problem. The fatal dose of barium chloride for man has been reported to be only 0.8 to 0.9 gram. Currently, there have been no systematic studies on acute soluble barium poisoning. Based on the retrospective analysis of 55 global cases, toxicological characteristics, clinical features and management of acute

We sought to develop a biodegradable pancreatic stent that could be easily placed at operation into the human pancreatic duct and the degradation of which could be easily followed up. Spiral-shaped, gamma-sterilized stents were manufactured of 0.4-mm polylactide wire in which there was added 23 weight-% barium sulfate. The biodegradability of the stents was studied in vitro at two different pH values, the first resembling that of pancreatic juice and the other that of bile. The effects of enzymoactivity in the test solution and the composition of the stents (with or without barium addition) al

The anatomy of the nasolacrimal duct of the horse was studied grossly and radiographically, using barium contrast dacryocystorhinography and methyl methacrylate casts. Radiographic contrast studies were performed on 4 specimens and gross dissections were performed on 6 specimens. Dacryocystorhinography accurately delineated the course of the nasolacrimal duct, as was subsequently demonstrated by gross dissection. A 60% barium sulfate suspension produced good radiographic contrast, allowing critical assessment of the anatomic features of the nasolacrimal duct.

INTRODUCTION: Barium intoxication presents initially with vague gastrointestinal symptoms and paresthesia but can quickly progress to life-threatening hypokalemia and resultant paralysis, cardiac dysrhythmias, and death.
CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old male presented to the emergency department after ingestion of barium chloride/barium sulfate powder. The patient required intubation and aggressive potassium replacement at rates up to 60 mEq/h. Continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF) was initiated utilizing 4 mEq/L K (potassium) replacement fluid and was transitioned to 0 mEq/L K dialysat
