Diagnosis and characterization of duck beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome in Chongqing of China.

Duck beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome (BADS) is a newly emerged disease in China since 2015. In October 2017, an unidentified disease occurred in Cherry Valley ducks, Chongqing municipality, the southwest of China. The affected birds showed short beak and growth retardation clinical signs. The disease caused approximately 20.00% morbidity and serious weight loss due to retarded growth. In order to identify the causative agent of BADS, liver, spleen, lung and heart samples were collected for virus isolation, hemagglutination test, PCR identification, and partial gene sequencing. The isolated

A biochemical and pharmacological examination of Rhamphiophis oxyrhynchus (Rufous beaked snake) venom.

The venom of R. oxyrhynchus, a member of the psammophiine subfamily of the colubrid assemblage, was examined for biological activity using biochemical and pharmacological techniques. Venom displayed a high protein content, a complex electrophorectic profile and PLA2 activity but no detectable proteolytic or haematological activities. In the chick biventer cervicis nerve muscle preparation, venom (1-10 microg/ml) displayed postsynaptic neurotoxic activity as evidenced by inhibition of indirect (0.1 Hz, 0.2 ms, supramaximal V) twitches and responses to exogenous acetylcholine (1 mM) and carbacho

Transsinus Pinning to Correct Lateral Deviation of the Upper Beak in Juvenile Macaws.

Lateral deviation of the upper beak ("scissor beak" or "wry beak") is a common malocclusion in many species of birds but appears to be a common presentation in macaws (Ara species). This article describes transsinus pinning, a procedure in which a pin is passed through the frontal sinuses, turned parallel to the upper beak, and attached to the tip of the beak with an orthodontic rubber band to provide constant tension on the beak as it grows. The tension of the rubber band is maintained until the beak is considered straight. The results of 16 cases in which this beak-straightening procedure wa

Sequential scapholunate and volar beak ligament reconstructions with flexor carpi radialis tendon grafts.

The flexor carpi radialis tendon is considered by many the workhorse tendon in hand and wrist surgery. Some have expressed concerns about altering the mechanics of the wrist by sacrificing part or all of the flexor carpi radialis tendon. We present an interesting case of sequential scapholunate and volar beak ligament reconstructions using a flexor carpi radialis tendon autograft where a slip of tendon was harvested twice within three years, achieving a satisfactory clinical outcome at five years following the initial surgery.

Navigating the unknown: assessing anthropogenic threats to beaked whales, family Ziphiidae.

This review comprehensively evaluates the impacts of anthropogenic threats on beaked whales (Ziphiidae)-a taxonomic group characterized by cryptic biology, deep dives and remote offshore habitat, which have challenged direct scientific observation. By synthesizing information published in peer-reviewed studies and grey literature, we identified available evidence of impacts across 14 threats for each Ziphiidae species. Threats were assessed based on their pathways of effects on individuals, revealing many gaps in scientific understanding of the risks faced by beaked whales. By applying a compr

A case report on the loss of an Iglesias resectoscope beak during hysteroscopic myomectomy.

This case report describes the dynamics of the detachment of the ceramic beak of an Iglesias resectoscope that was lost in the uterine cavity during 'cold loop' hysteroscopic myomectomy. Our aim is to increase awareness of this issue and caution our colleagues against using Iglesias resectoscopes for hysteroscopies. The ceramic beak of an Iglesias resectoscope can detach itself if hard tissue is encountered during operative hysteroscopy.

Observations on the reproductive morphology of the female short-beaked echidna, Tachyglossus aculeatus.

Although monotremes diverged from the therian mammal lineage approximately 187 million years ago, they retain various plesiomorphic and/or reptilian-like anatomical and physiological characteristics. This study examined the morphology of juvenile and adult female reproductive tracts across various stages of the presumptive oestrous cycle, collected opportunistically from cadaver specimens submitted to wildlife hospitals during the breeding season. In adult females, ovaries had a convoluted cortex with follicles protruding from the ovarian surface. While protruding antral follicles were absent

Cutaneous botryomycosis in a free-living short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus).

Botryomycosis is a chronic bacterial infection of the skin and viscera caused by nonbranching bacteria such as Staphylococcus spp. It results in the formation of chronic, suppurative and often granulomatous lesions that may resemble multiple abscesses. It has been diagnosed worldwide in both humans and animals. It is a rare disease, usually requiring surgical excision combined with long-term antibiotics to achieve a good resolution. A wild echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) was presented with a soft tissue mass at the base of the right distal beak with multiple discharging fistulas arising from

Digestibility of a new diet for captive short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus).

Short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus) are myrmecophages, or ant and termite insectivore specialists, and replicating their exact diet in captivity is problematic. Diets for captive animals often incorporate raw meat, eggs and cat food mixed together with water, and vitamin and mineral supplements. These diets have promoted a number of health problems in captive echidnas, such as gastritis, cystitis, gut impaction, obesity, and diarrhea. A manufactured diet was designed and three echidnas from two zoos were transitioned onto this diet to assess the acceptability and digestibility of th

Beak-Like Extension of the Pancreatic Uncinate Process on MDCT: Is It Hyperplasia or Movement?

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the pancreatic uncinate process with a beak-like extension (BLE) beyond the left border of the superior mesenteric artery, to define the cause of BLE, and to differentiate BLE from hyperplasia. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 1042 triple-phase contrast-enhanced multidetector-row computed tomography (3P-CE-MDCT) examinations of 500 patients. Finally, 38 patients (28 men, 10 women; mean age, 66 years) with 140 3P-CE-MDCT images showing BLE were studied regarding BLE size, contour, and cause. The superior mesenteric artery position was also evaluated. RESULT

Inside the parrot beak-and-tongue apparatus: Unlocking a model system for dexterity research.

Dexterity, the flexible and precise control of objects, requires the integration of cognitive abilities, motor coordination, and anatomical specializations. Due to the evolutionary significance of the opposable thumb, dexterity research has traditionally focused on primate species. However, based on a review of current knowledge in parrot morphology, cognition, and neurobiology, we propose that parrots represent a highly promising model system for dexterity research. We highlight lineage-specific morphological novelties that turn the parrot beak-and-tongue apparatus into a multifunctional tool

Novel goose parvovirus in domestic Linwu sheldrakes with short beak and dwarfism syndrome, China.

Recently, short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) had a sudden outbreak in Cherry Valley duck flocks, followed by Pekin ducks and mule ducks in various regions of mainland China. This widely spreading infectious disease was characterized by growth retardation, smaller beak and tarsus with high morbidity and low mortality rate. In this study, we identified and characterized virus from domestic Linwu sheldrakes (namely as HuN18) with SBDS. HuN18 isolates shared high nucleotide identity with novel goose parvovirus (N-GPV). A 5110-nucleotide full-length genome sequence of HuN18 was found with no d

Metastatic melanoma appearing to originate from the beak of a racing pigeon (Columba livia).

A 12-year-old male pigeon (Columba livia) was reported to have a small lesion on the lower beak, which was diagnosed as malignant melanoma. After surgery to remove it, the general condition of the bird worsened and the bird died. Post mortem examination revealed gross, black-colored lesions in the liver, kidney, spleen, and femur bone marrow. Lesions were not found in the adrenals. Histopathologically, the neoplastic cells had a large amount of melanin pigment and showed severe anisokaryosis and prominent nucleoli. Mitotic activity was infrequent but varied considerably where it was observed.

Beak and feather disease virus variant-dependent antibody reactivity in naturally infected psittacine birds.

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV, species Circovirus parrot) is the causative agent of psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), characterised primary by death of nestlings, feather loss and presumed immunosuppression in parrots worldwide. BFDV shows marked genetic heterogeneity, particularly in the open reading frame 2 (ORF2) encoding the capsid protein (Cap), but the impact of this diversity on antibody recognition has not been systematically assessed. In this study, we used seven recombinant Cap proteins derived from ORF2 variants selected to reflect the diversity of BFDV genotypes ci

Engineering in vitro-assembled beak and feather disease virus-like particles loaded with biomolecules.

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) is a member of the Circoviridae family and causes psittacine beak and feather diseases (PBFD) in birds. Abnormal feathers, brittle claws and beaks, and susceptibility to secondary infections are typical sympotoms of the BFDV-infected birds. The BFDV virion possesses a single-stranded DNA genome encapsidated within a 17-22 nm non-enveloped icosahedral virions. This study evaluated the loading capacity of BFDV virus-like particles (VLPs) with different biomolecules, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. The reassembled BFDV (ReBFDV) VLPs successfully encapsidated

LncRNA CA13/EFTUD2/CA13 caused crossed beak by regulating the mandibular calcification in chicken.

Crossed beak is a beak deformity that reduces feeding and drinking in affected chickens, thereby diminishing chicken production performance. Previous studies have shown that long non-coding RNA CA13 (lncRNA CA13), as an upstream regulator of carbonic anhydrase 13 (CA13), exhibited down-regulated expression in the lateral mandibular condyles of the short bone branch in cross-beaked chickens along with CA13. The study investigated the expression characteristics of lncRNA CA13 and its regulatory relationship with CA13 and elongation factor Tu GTP-binding domain-containing protein 2 (EFTUD2), layi

Hybrid Bio-Inspired Structure Based on Nacre and Woodpecker Beak for Enhanced Mechanical Performance.

Materials with high strength and toughness have always been pursued by academic and industrial communities. This work presented a novel hybrid brick-and-mortar-like structure by introducing the wavy structure of the woodpecker beak for enhanced mechanical performance. The effects of tablet waviness and tablet wave number on the mechanical performance of the bio-inspired composites were analyzed. Compared with nacre-like composites with a flat tablet, the strength, stiffness and toughness of the novel hybrid nacre-like composite with tablet wave surface increased by up to 191.3%, 46.6% and 811.

Short Beak and Dwarfism Syndrome in Ducks in Poland Caused by Novel Goose Parvovirus.

Short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS), which was previously identified only in mule ducks, is now an emerging disease of Pekin ducks in China and Egypt. The disease is caused by the infection of ducks with a genetic variant of goose parvovirus-novel goose parvovirus (nGPV). In 2019, SBDS was observed for the first time in Poland in eight farms of Pekin ducks. Birds in the affected flock were found to show growth retardation and beak atrophy with tongue protrusions. Morbidity ranged between 15% and 40% (in one flock), while the mortality rate was 4-6%. Co-infection with duck circovirus, a kno
