[Targeted parasite control of arthropod vectors' behavior in mammals, including man].

A broad spectrum of pathogenic species is able to purposefully change the behavior of mammals, intermediate hosts, thus increasing the probability for parasites to transform into a final host and preserving them as a species. For this, pathogens decrease host mobility or inhibit an avoidance reaction in a carnivore, the final host of the parasite. The found similar effects of some pathogens on human behavior are of no selective value as man is not an indispensable link in the ecological chain of parasitic development. However, such an action on behavior may result in negative consequences. For

Sexual behavior that is "out of control": a theoretical conceptual approach.

At this stage of our knowledge, it seems reasonable to assume that out-of-control sexual behavior results from a variety of etiological mechanisms associated with different behavioral patterns that share Goodman's two key features of addictive behavior: (1) a recurrent failure to control the sexual behavior; and (2) continuation of the behavior despite harmful consequences. Any overriding definition relevant to clinical management seems premature until we better understand the various patterns and their likely determinants. The concepts of "compulsivity" and "addiction" may have explanatory va

Hormonal control of birth behavior in the Tasmanian devil Sarcophilus harrisii.

In a number of marsupial species, females exhibit characteristic, stereotyped parturient behavior that facilitates the passage of the neonates to the pouch. In macropodids, this parturient behavior can be induced in non-pregnant females and males by treatment with either prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) or oxytocin (OT). This study investigated the effects of PGF2alpha and OT on behavior of Tasmanian devils. Animals tended to sit or lie down quickly, with little vocalization, after treatment with PGF2alpha or OT, while after saline, the animals remained alert, seldom sat, and frequently vocal

Rigid and flexible control of eating behavior in a college population.

The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between rigid control (RC) and flexible control (FC) of eating behavior and their relationship to traditional weight, eating, and affective measurements in a large heterogeneous population. Participants were 639 underweight to obese male and female college students. Multiple regression analyses (MRA) revealed that high RC was associated with high Body Mass Index (BMI) and high Disinhibition (DIS), and high FC was associated with low BMI and low DIS in women. In men, high RC was associated with high BMI and high DIS, whereas FC was not

[Adolescents living on their own--social control and health related behavior].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social control is an important dimension in the interaction between members of social groups. Such control may contribute to adherence to group norms and prevent health related risk behaviour. Adolescents moving out from home to live on their own may become left to themselves and lose their social network and mechanisms of control. We wanted to examine to what extent high school students living in lodgings were different from students living at home concerning health and health related behaviour. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was based on data from a cross section

Effects of two self-control procedures on modifying Type A behavior.

Two groups of Type A subjects who received either anxiety management training focused on coping with anger and hostility or operant self-control procedures were compared with a control group. Treated subjects compared to controls showed significant reductions in the overall Type A behavior, hard-driving/competitive, and speed/impatience scores. The results supported the hypothesis that both self-control training methods provide the opportunity to adapt more effective coping strategies and to rely less on Type A coping techniques. Self-control procedures such as anxiety management training and

[Behavior therapy self control in chronic compulsive organismic defective habit development].

Patients with chronic compulsive organismic mishabituations, which are rather difficult to treat, can be helped by self-control methods of behavioural therapy combined with suggestive measures. The author currently regards this therapeutic approach to be superior to aversion therapy, which was occasionally used for such cases in the past. The contribution presents a scheme of therapy which can be generalized and is based on the work of Meichenbaum and Leonhard. The scheme consists of two parts containing four phases each. The actual approach and the modification necessary to tailor it to the i

Emerging roles of Fgf14 in behavioral control.

Sexual disturbances, and aggressivity are a major social problem. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in the control of these behaviors are largely unknown. FGF14, which is an intracellular protein controlling neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission, has been implied in neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Mice with Fgf14 deletion show blunted responses to drugs of abuse. By behavioral tests we show that male Fgf14 knockout mice have a marked reduction of several behaviors including aggressivity and sexual behavior. Other behaviors driven by spontaneous initiative like burying

Neural control of sexually dimorphic behaviors.

All sexually reproducing animals exhibit gender differences in behavior. Such sexual dimorphisms in behavior are most obvious in stereotyped displays that enhance reproductive success such as mating, aggression, and parental care. Sexually dimorphic behaviors are a consequence of a sexually differentiated nervous system, and recent studies in fruit flies and mice reveal novel insights into the neural mechanisms that control these behaviors. In the main, these include a diverse array of novel sex differences in the nervous system, surprisingly modular control of various stereotyped dimorphic be

Illusion of control and behavioral control attempts in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The present research used the illusion-of-control paradigm to examine the relationships among obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, behavioral control attempts, and illusory sense of control. Participants were presented with a preprogrammed sequence of aversive and neutral visual stimuli and were encouraged to attempt to control the sequence with keyboard presses. Participants rated their perceived level of control 3 times during the task. In addition, the authors used the repetitiveness of keyboard presses as a measure of rigid, compulsive-like behavior. In Study 1, this procedure was

I've got a friend somewhere: control of social behavior across striatal subregions.

Most animals and humans are inherently social, enabling group dynamics to promote survival. Despite their importance, how the brain calibrates appropriate social behaviors to maximize survival and benefits remains incompletely understood. Distributed networks of neural circuits mediate complex behavioral states, including social behaviors. The striatum has long-known to be a structure essential for motivation and goal-directed behavior. The striatum is massive: it extends far along the anterior-posterior axis and can be divided into ventral, dorsal, and posterior domains. While it is well-appr

Cell surface engineering via self-assembly DNA networks for cell behavior control.

Synthesis of the extracellular matrix provides a novel opportunity to cell behavior control. However, exploration of the application of nucleic acid materials for cell surface engineering to achieve physical regulation of migration remains relatively limited. In this study, a self-assembled DNA network anchored to the cell membrane was constructed as a synthetic matrix mimic, which has been shown to inhibit cancer cell migration and invasion through physical confinement. The DNA network forms a dense and uniform engineering on the surface of tumor cells through a process of self-assembly. This

The cerebellum implements structured representation of valence to support adaptive behavior control.

Animals are thought to form internal models in the brain representing safety and danger, enabling avoidance through learned associations. Although the cerebellum has been implicated in active avoidance, its role in constructing internal models remains unclear. Here, we combined calcium imaging and closed-loop virtual reality in adult zebrafish to examine cerebellar circuits underlying avoidance learning. Fish learned to associate visual cues with safety or danger in a cerebellum-dependent manner using electric shocks as instructive signals. Cerebellar output neurons and Purkinje cells in the d

Force control deficits in rapid eye movement behavior disorder and Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine if there are deficits in force variability, force increase, force decrease and force errors in rapid eye movement behavior disorder (RBD) using established force control paradigms. METHODS: A cohort of 27 controls, 37 RBD and 37 early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) were investigated. Individuals completed constant force and ballistic force control for the finger and ankle. RESULTS: There was greater force variability in RBD compared with controls and PD during the constant force tasks (p < 0.05). Additionally, we split the RBD group into those with mi

Assessment of eating behavior in patients with migraine: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Altered eating behaviors may precede the onset of full-scale eating disorders. Given the link between eating disorders and migraine, it is critical to identify individuals with migraine with altered eating behaviors. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate eating behaviors in a sample of migraine patients and to examine their potential associations with migraine frequency and related disability. METHODS: Adult patients diagnosed with migraine (n = 531) were asked to report their monthly migraine days (MMDs), complete the Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6), and answer the Adult Eati

Carbon Spacer Strategy: Control the Photoswitching Behavior of Donor-Acceptor Stenhouse Adducts.

Understanding the relationship between chemical structure and photoswitching property of donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) is necessary for developments and applications of the novel photoresponsive molecule. In the current work, we demonstrated a close relationship between the length of carbon spacer and photoswitching property of DASAs. A series of DASAs with barbituric acid substituted electron-withdrawing part and N-methylaniline substituted electron-donating part were synthesized. With shortening the carbon spacer between the phenyl and amine groups in the electron-donating part, t

Voiding behavior in awake unrestrained untethered spontaneously hypertensive and Wistar control rats.

The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR), a genetic model of high blood pressure, has also been studied as a potential model of overactive bladder. In vivo studies have confirmed the presence of surrogate markers of overactive bladder, including detrusor overactivity, increased urinary frequency, decreased bladder capacity and voided volume (VV), and afferent hypersensitivity to bladder irritation. However, these observations were during awake cystometry using implanted bladder catheters tethered to an infusion pump and artificially filled. We conducted experiments in awake unrestrained unteth

Precise Motor Control Enables Rapid Flexibility in Vocal Behavior of Marmoset Monkeys.

Investigating the evolution of human speech is difficult and controversial because human speech surpasses nonhuman primate vocal communication in scope and flexibility [1-3]. Monkey vocalizations have been assumed to be largely innate, highly affective, and stereotyped for over 50 years [4, 5]. Recently, this perception has dramatically changed. Current studies have revealed distinct learning mechanisms during vocal development [6-8] and vocal flexibility, allowing monkeys to cognitively control when [9, 10], where [11], and what to vocalize [10, 12, 13]. However, specific call features (e.g.,
