In this study, we investigated the relation between global and domain-specific self-esteem and psychiatric disorders. A sample of 577 children aged 8-14 years was recruited via psychiatric hospitals and from the general population. Parents were given a diagnostic interview to assess children's psychiatric diagnoses (current/past). Parents and children completed questionnaires on child symptoms. Children completed a questionnaire on global and domain-specific self-esteem (scales: scholastic competence, social acceptance, athletic performance and physical appearance, global self-esteem). Self-es

Eye tracking and gaze pattern studies have been used to evaluate human behavior for decades. This is because of its ability to reveal conscious and subconscious behaviors when subjects are tasked with observation, decision making, and surgical performance. Many have popularized the use of this technology for radiographic assessment while evaluating radiologist behaviors, but little has been described for surgeon behavior patterns when evaluating preoperative deformities by radiograph. Because the radiographic assessment strongly influences surgical selection, the present study was designed to

Huntington's disease (HD) is a monogenic, autosomal dominant inherited fatal disease that affects 1 in 10,000 people worldwide. Given its unique genetic characteristics, HD would appear as one of the most straightforward neurodegenerative diseases to replicate in animal models. Indeed, mutations in the HTT gene have been used to generate a variety of animal models that display differential pathologies and have significantly increased our understanding of the pathological mechanisms of HD. However, decades of efforts have also shown the complexity of recapitulating the human condition in other

Instinctive defensive behaviors, consisting of stereotyped sequences of movements and postures, are an essential component of the mouse behavioral repertoire. Since defensive behaviors can be reliably triggered by threatening sensory stimuli, the selection of the most appropriate action depends on the stimulus property. However, since the mouse has a wide repertoire of motor actions, it is not clear which set of movements and postures represent the relevant action. So far, this has been empirically identified as a change in locomotion state. However, the extent to which locomotion alone captur

Since the second half of the twentieth century, many important discoveries in the field of behavioral psychopharmacology have been made using operant conditioning cages. These cages provide objective data collection and have revolutionized behavioral research. Unfortunately, in the rush towards automation, many mistakes may have been made that could have been avoided by observing experimental animals. The study described in this paper is an excellent example of how important additional behavioral observation can be for interpreting instrumental data. In this study, we evaluated the effects of

When learning a new motor skill, we benefit from watching others. It has been suggested that observation of others' actions can build a motor representation in the observer, and as such, physical and observational learning might share a similar neural basis. If physical and observational learning share a similar neural basis, then motor cortex stimulation during observational practice should similarly enhance learning by observation as it does through physical practice. Here, we used transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) to address whether anodal stimulation to M1 during observational

The limitations of using small-brained rodents to model diseases that affect large-brain humans are becoming increasingly obvious as novel therapies emerge. Huntington's disease (HD) is one such disease. In recent years, the desirability of a large-brained, long-lived animal model of HD for preclinical testing has changed into a necessity. Treatment involving gene therapy in particular presents delivery challenges that are currently unsolved. Models using long-lived, large-brained animals would be useful, not only for refining methods of delivery (particularly for gene and other therapies that

Introduction: The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an endogenous regulatory system involved in a wide range of physiologic and disease processes. Study of ECS regulation provides novel drug targets for disease treatment. Intravital microscopy (IVM), a microscopy-based imaging method that allows the observation of cells and cell-cell interactions within various tissues and organs in vivo, has been utilized to study tissues and cells in their physiologic microenvironment. This article reviews the current state of the IVM techniques used in ECS-related inflammation research. Methodological Aspects

This study reviews the behavioral techniques that control visual stimuli to systematically modulate visual processing in an observer's brain. These techniques are indirect but more affordable than more-direct techniques for stimulating the brain. The limitations of these techniques and the calibrations necessary for them are also discussed. Some of the behavioral techniques can be also used in field studies by making use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology and a head-mounted display (HMD). The AR HMDs for the behavioral techniques was assembled by combining a smartphone and a wearable stereos

Hands-on training is a crucial part of education in neuroendovascular treatment to ensure safe and rapid acquisition of techniques. However, there is a significant gap between training and actual clinical practice. This study will introduce innovations for more practical thrombus retrieval training that was developed in this process. A Smart Vascular Model 3 in 1 was used. A pink pseudothrombus was inserted into the M1 (horizontal segment of the middle cerebral artery) section of the model. Then, a "red underlay" purchased at a stationery store was placed to cover the proximal part of M1 and b

Objective: Depression is a common psychological and physiological disease in the world, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients and families. Exercise is an economic and noninvasive antidepressant measure, which has been widely recognized and applied in daily life and clinical practice, and the related mechanism research has also been paid attention to. In recent years, a new research report pointed out that peripheral administration of L-lactate can reverse depression-like behavior in mice, which suggesting that the lactic acid produced during exercise may be one of the factor

Quantifying behavior and relating it to underlying biological states is of paramount importance in many life science fields. Although barriers to recording postural data have been reduced by progress in deep-learning-based computer vision tools for keypoint tracking, extracting specific behaviors from this data remains challenging. Manual behavior coding, the present gold standard, is labor-intensive and subject to intra- and inter-observer variability. Automatic methods are stymied by the difficulty of explicitly defining complex behaviors, even ones which appear obvious to the human eye. Her

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Over the last decade, the application of computer vision techniques to the analysis of behavioural patterns has seen a considerable increase in research interest. One such interesting and recent application is the visual behavioural analysis of mental disorders. Despite the very recent surge in interest in this area, relatively little has been done thus far to assist individuals living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The work proposed herein represents a proof of concept system designed to demonstrate the efficacy of such an approach, from the computational persp
