Millon Behavioral Medicine Diagnostic Scales Do Not Predict Long-term Weight Loss Outcomes in Bariatric Surgery Patients.

BACKGROUND: Psychological factors identified during presurgical screening have the potential to identify which patients may respond better to bariatric surgery, and which patients may need additional assistance. Previous research has validated a number of potential instruments for use in presurgical screening. METHOD: This study evaluated archival data for 224 patients for a 60-month period following bariatric surgery to examine how presurgical scores on the Millon Behavioral Medicine Diagnostic predict body mass index (BMI) over time. Follow-up data was available on 96% of these patients at

Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) position statement: restore CDC funding for firearms and gun violence prevention research.

The Society for Behavioral Medicine (SBM) urges restoration of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funding for firearms and gun violence prevention research. Gun violence in the United States is an important and costly public health issue in need of research attention. Unfortunately, there have been no concerted CDC-funded research efforts in this area since 1996, due to the passage of the Dickey Amendment. To remedy the information-gathering restrictions caused by the Dickey Amendment bans, it is recommended that Congress remove 'policy riders' on federal appropriations bills tha

Position statement: The Society of Behavioral Medicine supports federal action to break the cycle of gun violence.

The United States continues to see significant issues with gun violence, resulting in significant public health concerns. Behavioral medicine is often involved in addressing the psychological aftermath of gun violence, as survivors experience higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicidal ideation. Black and Latino communities are disproportionately affected by gun violence due to structural inequities, with gun violence furthering the structural and health inequities experienced in these communities. While the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 helped to improv

"Precision Medicine" and the Failed Search for Binary Brain Sex Differences to Address Gender Behavioral Health Disparities.

Human brain imaging took off in the 1980s and has since flooded the zone in the analysis of gender differences in behavior and mental health. Couched in the aims of "precision medicine," the vast majority of this research has taken a binary approach, dividing participants according to the M/F box at intake and asserting that the sex differences found in neuroimaging will lead to important advances for treating neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the actual findings from this 40-year project have not lived up to its promise, in part because of the over-binarization of sex and general ignorance

Synergistic Neuroprotective Effects of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Levodopa in Parkinson's Disease: A Behavioral and Pharmacokinetic Study.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurological disorder that causes debilitating motor symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia. TCM formulations, such as Zhengan Xifeng Decoction (ZXFD) in combination with Western medicine (Levodopa), are being examined for Parkinson's disease treatment. However, the absence of reliable and interpretable experimental models has hampered mechanism elucidation. This study evaluated the neuroprotective effects of ZXFD in a rat model of PD, assessing its efficacy and safety when combined with Western medicine (WM). 240 mice with MPTP-induced PD-li

Depression screening in pediatric epilepsy: evidence for the benefit of a behavioral medicine service in early detection.

Despite the increased risk and prevalence of depression in youth with epilepsy, only one-third receive mental health services. Untreated depression can contribute to negative outcomes and increased health-care utilization and medical cost. Proactive behavioral medicine screening may facilitate identification of depressive symptoms and necessary interventions in efforts to optimize behavioral health and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Primary study aims included the examination of 1) rates of self-reported depression in youth with epilepsy, 2) differences in depression by demographic an

New possibility of traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine as treatment for behavioral and psychiatric symptoms in dementia.

Yokukansan, one of the Kampo prescriptions, is composed of seven herbaceous plants and was developed in China in the 16th century as a cure for restlessness and agitation in children. Yokukansan has also become a popular drug combination in Japan, especially for the behavioral and psychiatric symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Recent studies have shown that yokukansan might also be quite effective against BPSD occurring in association with other types of dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body disease, Parkinson's disease with dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and vascular dementia. Utility of the Millon Behavioral Medicine Diagnostic to predict medication adherence in patients diagnosed with heart failure.

Medication non-adherence is common and a primary reason for poor medical outcomes among individuals with heart failure (HF). This study's aims were to determine whether depression, hostility, and the personality-based Millon Behavioral Medicine Diagnostic (MBMD) Medication Abuse scale were associated with medication adherence (e.g., beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, statins) beyond contributions of demographic, medical, and psychosocial variables in an ethnically-diverse sample of 105 men and women diagnosed with HF. In hierarchical regression, greater MBMD Medication Abuse scale score

[Application of motor behavior evaluation method of zebrafish model in traditional Chinese medicine research].

The zebrafish model has attracted much attention due to its strong reproductive ability, short research cycle, and ease of maintenance. It has always been an important vertebrate model system, often used to carry out human disease research. Its motor behavior features have the advantages of being simpler, more intuitive, and quantifiable. In recent years, it has received widespread attention in the study of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)for the treatment of sleep disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, fatigue, epilepsy, and other diseases. This paper reviews the characteristics of zebrafish
