Can Decision Making Research Provide a Better Understanding of Chemical and Behavioral Addictions?

We reviewed the cognitive and neurobiological commonalities between chemical and behavioral addictions. Poor impulse control, limited executive function and abnormalities in reward processing are seen in both group of entities. Brain imaging shows consistent abnormalities in frontoparietal regions and the limbic system. In drug addiction, exaggerated risk taking behavior and temporal discounting may reflect an imbalance between a hyperactive mesolimbic and hypoactive executive systems. Several cognitive distortions are found in pathological gambling that seems to harness the brain reward syste

Future directions in behavioral headache research: applications for an evolving health care environment.

Three decades of research has produced effective behavioral treatments for migraine and tension-type headache, yet the full fruition of this research has not been realized. Further development and dissemination of behavioral treatments is needed to impact the large numbers of those with headache who potentially could benefit from these interventions. At the same time, an evolving health care environment challenges researchers and providers to employ greater efficiency and innovation in managing all chronic disorders. Hopefully, the recently published clinical trials guidelines for behavioral h

Ok Google: Using virtual assistants for data collection in psychological and behavioral research.

Because of the increasing popularity of voice-controlled virtual assistants, such as Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant, they should be considered a new medium for psychological and behavioral research. We developed Survey Mate, an extension of Google Assistant, and conducted two studies to analyze the reliability and validity of data collected through this medium. In the first study, we assessed validated procrastination and shyness scales as well as social desirability indicators for both the virtual assistant and an online questionnaire. The results revealed comparable internal consistency

Research on the cognitive-behavioral treatment of school refusal: a review and recommendations.

Cognitive-behavior therapy is frequently used in the treatment of school refusal, a challenging problem for mental health professionals and school authorities. We review the clinical and research support for the efficacy of cognitive-behavior therapy using recently published guidelines for determining the level of evidentiary support for psychosocial interventions. Although cognitive-behavior therapy appears to be a useful treatment for school refusal, further research is needed before it can be considered as having "well-established" empirical status. Several other important methodological an

Male bisexual behavior and HIV risk in the United States: synthesis of research with implications for behavioral interventions.

This paper reviews recent literature on male bisexuality and HIV risk and suggests new directions for intervention and research in the United States. AIDS case reports and behavioral studies based on convenience samples suggest that behaviorally bisexual men use condoms inconsistently with male and female partners, seldom disclose their bisexuality to their female partners, and are more likely than exclusively homosexual men to report multiple HIV risk behaviors. Male bisexuality may present greatest HIV risk in the context of (a) male prostitution, (b) injecting drug use, (c) sexual identity

Panic disorder with agoraphobia from a behavioral neuroscience perspective: Applying the research principles formulated by the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative.

In the current review, we reconceptualize a categorical diagnosis-panic disorder and agoraphobia-in terms of two constructs within the domain "negative valence systems" suggested by the Research Domain Criteria initiative. Panic attacks are considered as abrupt and intense fear responses to acute threat arising from inside the body, while anxious apprehension refers to anxiety responses to potential harm and more distant or uncertain threat. Taking a dimensional view, panic disorder with agoraphobia is defined with the threat-imminence model stating that defensive responses are dynamically org

VRrec: A zero-coding open-source VR body-motion capture tool for behavioral research.

We present VRrec, an open-source, motion-tracking and recording tool for PC-based virtual reality (VR). The tool addresses a persistent gap in VR-based experimental research by enabling real-time capture of head, hand, and optional body-tracking data without the need to code. VRrec runs discreetly in the background, collecting positional and rotational data as researchers engage participants with third-party VR applications. This design lets researchers use flexible paradigms that leverage off-the-shelf VR content, eliminating the need to build or modify custom software. However, because VRrec

Recruitment and Retention of Racially Minoritized Families in a Pediatric Behavioral Diabetes Research Study.

Racially minoritized youth are disproportionately affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D)-related inequities yet remain underrepresented in pediatric behavioral research. This study examined recruitment and retention strategies used in a pilot intervention to increase equitable participation. The Research on Optimizing the Use of Technology with Education for T1D was a telehealth behavioral intervention for youth aged 10-15 years with T1D and their caregivers. This study aimed to recruit a sample comprised of at least 50% youth from racially minoritized backgrounds. Recruitment outcomes, contact att

Personal Genetic Information about HIV: Research Participants' Views of Ethical, Social, and Behavioral Implications.

BACKGROUND: Personal genetic information (PGI) about HIV is produced in research and entering the clinic and direct-to-consumer market, but little consideration has been given to ethical and social issues, public perspectives, and potential behavioral implications. OBJECTIVES: This research queried the views of research participants at risk for or infected with HIV, exploring their perspectives on HIV-related PGI and its ethical, social, and behavioral implications. METHODS: We used focus groups to collect rich information about participants' perspectives on the ethical, social, and behavior

Commentary on: Are we overpathologizing everyday life? A tenable blueprint for behavioral addiction research.

This commentary supports the argument that there is an increasing tendency to subsume a range of excessive daily behaviors under the rubric of non-substance related behavioral addictions. The concept of behavioral addictions gained momentum in the 1990s with the recent reclassification of pathological gambling as a non-substance behavioral addiction in DSM-5 accelerating this process. The propensity to label a host of normal behaviors carried out to excess as pathological based simply on phenomenological similarities to addictive disorders will ultimately undermine the credibility of behaviora

Excitatory amino acids and memory: evidence from research on Alzheimer's disease and behavioral pharmacology.

The excitatory amino acid transmitter (EAA) system is believed to play a crucial role in a variety of physiological processes related to neuronal plasticity. Substantial neurophysiological evidence suggests that, under normal physiological conditions. EAAs may be involved in mechanisms underlying learning and memory. However, overactivity of this system produces excitotoxic damage to neurons which is believed to be an etiological factor in various neurological conditions, such as epilepsy, and stroke-induced impairments. The fact that EAAs have been implicated in both, normal cognitive functio

Toward Sham Interventions for Behavioral Voice Treatment Outcome Research in Female Students Without Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To develop sham voice treatment techniques to be used in voice treatment outcome research, and to investigate their effectiveness as sham. This entails that the techniques induce no changes in voice or voice physiology, yet still lead to a perception of efficacy. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective randomized blinded controlled study. METHODS: Three distinct sham intervention protocols (SIPs) were conceptualized as placebic comparators for three common voice treatment approaches with focus on vocalization (SIP1), respiration (SIP2), and manipulation (SIP3). Behavioral Economic Strategies to Improve Enrollment Rates in Clinical Research: Embedded Recruitment Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 1 in 3 clinical trials end prematurely due to underenrollment. Strategies to enhance recruitment are often implemented without scientific rigor to evaluate efficacy. Evidence-based, cost-effective behavioral economic strategies designed to influence decision-making may be useful to promote clinical trial enrollment. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated 2 behavioral economic strategies to improve enrollment and retention rates across 4 clinical trials: information provision (IP) and contingency management (CM; ie, lottery). A Research-Informed Approach to Providing Behavioral Healthcare to Women with Extensive Trauma Histories.

Translating research to behavioral healthcare practice is vital for improving treatment impact but can be challenging. Current and lifetime histories of trauma need to be considered in behavioral healthcare provision as they can significantly affect an individual's treatment experience. This article provides guidance on how to utilize research findings regarding trauma prevalence and experiences of women who have substance use disorder and who are homeless or near homeless to help guide responsive healthcare and treatment in practice.

Multimodal approaches to visual experimental research: Imaging, electrophysiology, and behavior.

Although vision is one of the primary senses in humans, direct mechanistic research in patients is challenging both technically and ethically because of its multiscale complexity-spanning phototransduction, neural processing, and perception. The foundation of visual science is animal models, which offer controlled, systematic assess to every stage of the visual pathway. Animal models' visual phenotyping methods are highly significant for vision-related research. However, the selection of various experimental methods and critical differences between them are frequently disregarded in study desi

Research on recognition and intervention of behavior sequences in virtual museum learning.

Learning in virtual museum can transcend the limits of time and space. The virtual museum that combines expertise in different disciplines provides a virtual learning environment for college students, but how to intervene in museum learning has been unclear. Targeted at this question, this study selected 2030 majors in clinical medicine from a certain university and the final results exhibited four types of learners who are of high, medium, low and absent museum immersion, respectively. When the learners visited the virtual museum, their behavior data were collected backstage and later used as

Research progress in rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by abnormal dream acting behavior such as vocalization and twitching related to dream content during REM sleep. The diagnosis requires polysomnography demonstrating a loss of normal skeletal muscle atonia during REM sleep. Both idiopathic RBD and secondary RBD are highly related to synucleinopathy including Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. Almost all idiopathic RBD patients will develop synucleinopathy after a few years. Therefore, RBD may be an early marker in the progression of
