Profile of pediatric Crohn's disease in Belgium.

AIM: A Belgian registry for pediatric Crohn's disease, BELCRO, was created. This first report aims at describing disease presentation and phenotype and determining associations between variables at diagnosis and registration in the database. METHODS: Through a collaborative network, children with previously established Crohn's disease and newly diagnosed children and adolescents (under 18 y of age) were recruited over a 2 year period. Data were collected by 23 centers and entered in a database. Statistical association tests analyzed relationships between variables of interest at diagnosis. R

A monitoring network on acidification in Flanders, Belgium.

This paper presents the monitoring of acid deposition in Flanders (Belgium) and the change of the measurement objectives, recently towards measurement of ammonia. The monitoring network on acidification has provided results for 10 years. Analysis of acidifying pollutants between 2005 and 2010 shows decreasing concentrations throughout the whole period. NO(2) has no significant trend, although the average total deposition in 2010 (2027 Eq/ha.y) is still higher than the objectives of the Flemish environmental policy plan for 2015 (1800 Eq/ha.y). Given the contribution of ammonia, the Flemish Env

A paradise for LGBT rights? The paradox of Belgium.

How is it that a small country such as Belgium, with its reputation of relative conservatism, has jumped to the forefront of LGBT-friendly nations when it comes to the extension of rights to, and implementation of government policies for, its LGBT population? The analysis offered here focuses on a combination of six causes: the impact of wider secularization processes; the political history and culture of the country; the organization of especially the Flemish LGBT movement and reasons for its political effectiveness; mainstream social trends in national scapegoating hierarchies; the overall m

Antibiotic prescribing in dental practice in Belgium.

AIM: To assess the types and frequency of antibiotic prescriptions by Belgian dentists, the indications for antibiotic prescription, and dentists' knowledge about recommended practice in antibiotic use. METHODOLOGY: In this cross-sectional survey, dental practitioners were asked to record information about all antibiotics prescribed to their patients during a 2-week period. The dental practitioners were also asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire regarding demographic data, prescribing practices, and knowledge about antibiotic use. A random sample of 268 Belgian dentists particip

Epilepsy and driving in Belgium: proposals and justification.

Proposals about the regulations and medical criteria concerning epilepsy and driving, originally drawn up by the Commission on Epilepsy and Risk from the Belgian League against Epilepsy were discussed and amended by a panel of representatives of several scientific societies and of all Belgian universities in order to establish a broad consensus among Belgian epileptologists. The history of driving licencing in Belgium is discussed and some background information given to put the regulations in perspective. A proposal is made for an acceptable level of risk. Subsequently, a quantification of ri

[Female patient with cutaneous anthrax in Belgium].

A 23-year-old Turkish woman was admitted with an infection of the left thumb. The clinical picture was typical for cutaneous anthrax. Microbiological tests confirmed the diagnosis 'infection by Bacillus anthracis'. She recovered when treated with penicillin, although later tests revealed that the bacteria were resistant to this antibiotic. The patient became infected in Belgium as a result of wounding herself on the teeth of an illegally slaughtered sheep, which had possibly become infected in the pasture. Recognising the characteristic clinical picture of cutaneous anthrax is essential for pr

Indigenous malaria in a suburb of Ghent, Belgium.

We report here details of a patient with Plasmodium falciparum malaria which was acquired in the vicinity of Ghent (Evergem) in July 1997. Indigenous malaria disappeared from Belgium in 1938. Due to an increase in international travel, the influx of migrant labor and the changing environmental conditions, there has been an upsurge of imported malaria. Airport- and port-malaria is acquired through the bite of a tropical anophelline mosquito by people whose geographical history excludes exposure to this vector in its natural habitat. As far as we know, only two cases of port-malaria have been re

[Clinical epidemiology of Basedow's disease in Belgium].

UNLABELLED: Graves' disease (GD) patients treated with antithyroid drugs (ATD) have overall relapse rates of 30-50% after ATD discontinuation. Conflicting data have been reported with regard to the usefulness of adding thyroxine (I-T4) during and after ATD treatment. Also, clinicians are still in search of useful factors to predict remission/recurrence after ATD withdrawal. Eighty two consecutive patients were treated with ATD for 15 months, combined with 12 months of I-T4. Then, patients were randomized (placebo-controlled double blind protocol) to continuing I-T4 versus a placebo for one yea

A rare cause of biliary pain in Belgium.

Ascaris lumbricoides is the most frequent human helminthic parasite. Usually human ascariasis is poorly symptomatic but complications can arise due to worm migration. Erratic worm migration into the biliary tree is a rare but threatening condition regarding the associated complications: cholecystitis, pancreatitis, obstruction of bile ducts, liver abcesses and recurrent pyogenic cholangitis. We describe a case of a young belgian women suffering from recurrent biliary colics over a period of eight months with repeated normal ultrasound findings. ERCP proved being the only effective diagnostic p

The problem of entry to the medical course in Belgium.

Belgium already has a very high ratio of doctors to population. The output of new graduates is higher than can be justified by employment prospects. Applicants to university must be admitted if they have passed the school 'maturity examination'. The standard of this is set by the individual school, and the pass rate is unrelated to university requirements. Consequently the rate of entry to medical studies is very high and there is a very high failure rate (nearly half). The climate of opinion is against radical reform of this system. The author believes that under present circumstances a stron

Increasing trend of scabies in Belgium, 2000-2023.

BACKGROUND: Several European countries have reported an increasing trend of human scabies in the past twenty years. In Belgium, scabies' clusters hinted at a similar trend despite individual cases not being notifiable. We aimed to describe scabies' trends between 2000 and 2023 in Belgium. METHODS: We described the evolution of scabies during 2000-2023 in Belgium using a variety of available data sources. Using generalized linear models, we analysed yearly trends and seasonality of scabies diagnoses at general practitioners (GPs) in Flanders, occupational health services in Belgium, nationwide

Human psittacosis: a review with emphasis on surveillance in Belgium.

Chlamydia psittaci causes psittacosis in humans, mainly in persons in contact with birds in either the setting of occupational or companion bird exposure. Infection is associated with a range of clinical manifestations from asymptomatic infection to severe atypical pneumonia and systemic disease. This paper reviews new knowledge on psittacosis, its legal and regulatory aspects and presents epidemiological data on psittacosis in Belgium. In Belgium, the number of reported positive laboratory results increased slowly since 2010, and in 2017, the number almost doubled compared to the two previous

Microbiological Load of Edible Insects Found in Belgium.

Edible insects are gaining more and more attention as a sustainable source of animal protein for food and feed in the future. In Belgium, some insect products can be found on the market, and consumers are sourcing fresh insects from fishing stores or towards traditional markets to find exotic insects that are illegal and not sanitarily controlled. From this perspective, this study aims to characterize the microbial load of edible insects found in Belgium (i.e., fresh mealworms and house crickets from European farms and smoked termites and caterpillars from a traditional Congolese market) and t

Early effects of human papillomavirus vaccination in Belgium.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination has been reimbursed in Belgium since 2007 for girls (12-15 years), extended to girls up to 18 years in 2008. This study assesses the trend of HPV 16/18 infections in women less than 25 years of age participating in opportunistic cervical cancer screening. A significant reduction in the prevalence of HPV 16 [relative risk (RR)=0.61, 95% confidence interval=0.39-0.95] and a nonsignificant reduction in HPV 18 (RR=0.65, 95% confidence interval=0.29-1.48) was found in the youngest group (15-19 years). The prevalences in the older age group did not change signi

Prehospital paediatric emergencies in Belgium: an epidemiologic study.

OBJECTIVES: In Belgium, emergency medical services (EMS) are staffed with a medical team if mandatory according to the regulation authority procedures. Children are involved in interventions, but no extensive data are available in the country. We analysed the characteristics of the children involved in EMS to gain better knowledge of the pathologies and the needs of these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients under 16 years of age dealt with by our EMS team during a 2-year period. RESULTS: During the 2010-2011 period, our EMS performed 229 paediatric mission

The evolution of hypertension treatment in Belgium, a pharmacoepidemiological study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to study the number of patients treated for hypertension and the evolution in usage of different classes of antihypertensive medication. METHODS: Data from 1997 to 2009 was extracted from Pharmanet, a nation-wide database of prescriptions of reimbursed medication in Belgium. RESULTS: In 2009, 25% of women and 20% of men were prescribed at least one antihypertensive drug. Prescription rates rose with age but already 25% of the population aged between 41 and 60 years were treated. More than 50% of the Belgians above 60 years took antihypertensive medication

[Guidelines for surgical treatment of chronic periodontitis in Belgium].

Periodontal surgery is the most effective procedure to reduce pocket depth and to gain clinical attachment at deep sites. This is not surprising as surgery provides the best access and enables the clinician to extensively alter hard and soft tissues if necessary. Still, nonsurgical debridement is usually adopted as an initial measure of treatment for all sites. This reflects the conventional scheme of periodontal therapy; that is, overall non-surgical debridement followed by re-evaluation and surgery if and wherever necessary. The underlying reasons for organizing periodontal care as such are

Seroprevalence of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis infection in Belgium.

In order to determine the prevalence of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) in Belgium, the sera of 216 patients previously diagnosed with Borrelia burgdorferi infection were analysed for possible coinfection with the agent of HGE. For this purpose, an indirect immunofluorescence assay was applied, and positive results were confirmed by Western blot using a 44-kilodalton recombinant protein (rP44) specific for the agent of HGE. Sixteen of the 216 (7.4%) sera tested were positive for the HGE agent using indirect immunofluorescence assay, and seven (3%) of them were confirmed positive by Weste
