Lessons from a Danish study on neuropsychological impairment related to lead exposure.

Serious problems emerge when evaluating evidence on lead neurotoxicity in children. The extent of these problems and ways to control them were explored in a study of 1291 children from the first class in the schools of Aarhus municipality, Denmark. The lead retention in circumpulpal dentin in shed deciduous teeth was used as an indicator of cumulated lead exposure; it correlated most strongly with traffic density at the residence of each family and at the day-care institutions. In a nested case-control group selected on the basis of dentin lead concentrations, 29 of 200 children had encountere

Intellectual impairment in adolescent psychosis. A controlled psychometric study.

The relationship of cognitive impairment to the course of schizophrenia remains uncertain. By studying psychotic adolescents, 90% of whom were hospitalized for the first time, we hoped to reduce the influence of such confounding variables as lengthy disease process, neuroleptic treatment, and institutionalization. 39 psychotic adolescent subjects who fulfilled DSM-III criteria for schizophrenia, schizophreniform psychosis, paranoid schizophrenia, or atypical psychosis were compared to 41 non-psychotic adolescent psychiatric controls. Subjects were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale f

Auditory processing disorder evaluations and cognitive profiles of children with specific learning disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the auditory sensory-perceptual level of specific learning disorder (SLD) and explored relationships among neuropsychological assessments for SLD, auditory processing, and short and long latencies of auditory event-related potentials (ERPs). METHODS: Fifteen children (7-14 years old) comprised the control group; 34 children comprised the SLD group. Audiologic assessments included tone audiometry, acoustic immittance measurements, acoustic reflex, central auditory processing, brainstem evoked response audiometry, and long latency potentials (P3 and N2). Effect of metabolic control on cognitive functions in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVES: Neurocognitive functions of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) are reported to be poorer than those of healthy peers. The aim was to investigate the effects of age of onset of diabetes, metabolic control, and type of insulin regimen on neurocognitive functions in children and adolescents with T1D. METHODS: Forty-seven children aged 6-18 years, with T1D for at least five years, were included. Children with a known psychiatric disorder or chronic diseases other than T1D were excluded. Intelligence via the Wechsler children's intelligence scale (WISC-R), short-term memory v

Constructional apraxia in patients with discrete missile wounds of the brain.

Sixty patients with missile wounds confined to one of the four quadrants of the brain were investigated. All patients had neurosurgical verification of the limits of their lesions. The incidence and severity of constructional apraxia was studied using the WAIS Block Design and Object Assembly subtests, and the Bender Gestalt Test. A uniformly significant caudality effect was obtained with more posteriorly localized lesions resulting in more severe constructional apraxia. A significant laterality effect was obtained on two of three criterion measures with uniformly inferior performance by patie

Impact of refractive amblyopia on neuromotor and cognitive development in children aged 6-11 years.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of refractive amblyopia on neuromotor and cognitive development in children aged 6-11 years. METHODS: Twenty-five children diagnosed with refractive amblyopia at the Ophthalmology Clinic of Mersin University were retrospectively evaluated. The age distribution was 6 years (n=4), 7 years (n=5), 8 years (n=6), 9 years (n=4), 10 years (n=3) and 11 years (n=3). Spherical equivalent refractive error ranged from -4.00 to +7.50 diopters in the right eye and -1.50 to +7.25 diopters in the left eye. Binocular visual acuity was 1.0 in 23 children, while two children

Psychological assessment of catatonic schizophrenia.

Probably due to the rarity of the disorder and the general inability of catatonic patients to cooperate with standardized assessment, no data exist documenting the psychological features associated with catatonic schizophrenia that may appear on psychological tests. This study utilized standard assessment techniques to examine clinical hypotheses regarding the psychogenic correlates of catatonic conditions from the performance of one man on psychological tests. In accordance with previous theory, test findings indicated frequent constriction, rigidity, and negativism in conjunction with compul

The incidence of cognitive dysfunction in an encopretic population in children.

Cognitive testing was conducted in a clinical population of encopretic patients. Testing included the Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) and the Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test (BVMGT). Although Full Scale, Verbal and Performance Intelligence Quotients on the WISC-R were not statistically different from general population means, subtests in Arithmetic (p less than 0.001), Digit Span (p less than 0.001) and Coding (p less than 0.05) were. The Boston Teacher Questionnaire. 2. Assessments of validity.

We assessed the validity of the Boston Teacher Questionnaire in a sample of 3451 9-year-old children. Those identified by the questionnaire as having a learning difficulty syndrome were compared to those without any characteristic of that syndrome. The validity reference measures were individually administered neuropsychological assessments at age 7 years and a group-administered reading achievement test at age 9 years. Girls and boys with the reading syndrome had much lower reading scores at age 9 years than did their peers. Boys, but not girls, with the arithmetic syndrome were much more lik

Impaired visual information processing in alcohol-dependent subjects: a proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study of the primary visual cortex.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic alcoholism is associated with impaired cognitive abilities, with a more severe deficit in visual than in verbal functions. The visual processing deficits have classically been associated with impaired function of the visual cortex, located in the occipital lobe. The present study sought to increase current understanding of the impaired visual processing abilities in alcohol-dependent subjects and their correlation with metabolic aberrations in the occipital lobe using in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H MRS). METHOD: To that end, ¹H MRS was carried out in the

Immediate and long-term posttherapy neuropsychologic performance in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated without central nervous system radiation.

Intellectual and neuropsychologic test performance was studied in 41 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia within one year of completing multidrug therapy in which intrathecal methotrexate was the sole agent of central nervous system prophylaxis. To control for possible effects of intensive systemic chemotherapy and the disruptive psychosocial effects of treatment on psychometric test function, 33 children with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma who had no CNS disease or treatment were similarly studied. All patients studied had been in continuous complete remission since diagnosis. Within each d
