Bereavement in the context of homelessness: A rapid review.

It is common for the bereaved who are experiencing homelessness to be unrecognized grievers, who are then not adequately supported in their bereavement. This rapid review gathered published information from 17 references on how bereavement is experienced within the context of homelessness (from 509 references imported for screening). Four themes identified for understanding the bereavement experience were bereavement as a risk factor for homelessness, anticipatory grief, increased frequency of death, and ways of processing grief. Current practices used for support were themed into memorials, a

[The mental health of persons bereaved by suicide].

This paper aims to describe the care for persons bereaved by suicide from the perspective of mental health. Those bereaved by suicide experience three types of difficulties. The first encompasses difficulties in daily life, including death notifications, dealing with the funeral, cancellation of bank accounts, legal issues such as disagreements related to inheritance, and so on. The second type involves difficulties with health. Bereaved persons will sometimes experience psychological responses, such as feelings of sadness, guilt, anger, fear, embarrassment; these may be accompanied by somatic

Surveying the quality of bereavement support within a service setting: A pilot study using cognitive interviewing with bereaved people.

BACKGROUND: Provision of bereavement care is not standard practice in palliative care, meaning routinely collected data to understand support quality at a service level is scarce. Survey research can fill this gap. AIM: To pilot and refine a survey and the survey method to measure the quality and variations in bereavement support at a service level. DESIGN: Cognitive interview study. In analysis we used a combination of reparative and descriptive cognitive interview approaches to ascertain measurement errors and any participation distress. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: People bereaved due to cancer

Performance of DSM-5 Persistent Complex Bereavement Disorder Criteria in a Community Sample of Bereaved Military Family Members.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article was to examine the accuracy of DSM-5 proposed criteria for persistent complex bereavement disorder in identifying putative cases of clinically impairing grief and in excluding nonclinical cases. Performance of criteria sets for prolonged grief disorder and complicated grief were similarly assessed. METHOD: Participants were family members of U.S. military service members who died of any cause since September 11, 2001 (N=1,732). Putative clinical and nonclinical samples were derived from this community sample using cutoff scores from the Inventory of Comp

Parents' mental health after the birth of an extremely preterm child: a comparison between bereaved and non-bereaved parents.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of extremely preterm birth (24-26 weeks of gestation) on the mental health of parents two to six years after delivery, and to examine potential differences in post-traumatic growth between parents whose newborn infant died and those whose child survived. METHOD: A total of 54 parents who had lost their newborn and 38 parents whose preterm child survived were assessed by questionnaires with regard to depression and anxiety (HADS) and post-traumatic growth (PTGI). RESULTS: Neither group of parents had clinically relevant levels of depression and anxiety. Mothers

[An interactive guidance therapy for traumatic perinatal bereavement].

The Early Childhood and Parenting Unit within the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Department at the Reims University Hospital offers an early parent-child care program, notably through Interactive Guidance Therapy (IGT). This intervention is based on a highly structured framework, which makes it very reassuring and supportive for both the child and the parent. This approach allows the therapist to more easily access the intimacy of the parent-child relationship. The microanalysis of interactions filmed with the parent-recognized as the expert on their child-enables a different perspective o

Trajectories of grief following bereavement: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Following bereavement, a minority experiences severe, persistent, and disabling grief, termed prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Establishing individual differences in how grief develops over time can guide clinical decision-making, yet has only recently received empirical scrutiny. The present review synthesizes results from grief trajectory studies. DESIGN: Systematic review (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42024601883). METHOD: We included peer-reviewed, longitudinal, quantitative studies that identify grief trajectories in bereaved adults. Searches of Web of Scie

Bereavement and Dermatologic Disease: An Underrecognized Clinical Consideration.

Bereavement is a biologically active stress state and disease modifier that influences atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and melanoma detection and prognosis. Dermatologists should consider bereavement in patients with atopic dermatitis or psoriasis flares, reinforce skin cancer surveillance in bereaved patients, and consider recent bereavement when initiating or escalating therapy.

Narrative review of cancer bereavement care before loss.

Contrary to sudden death, cancer death allows families to have a certain period to be ready for death and receive some support from health care providers. This review aims to picture a family's experience of cancer trajectory that is associated with bereavement outcomes and health care provider's care provided before loss. We reviewed pre-loss factors associated with grief and indicated that preparedness for death may contribute to alleviating grief. Simultaneously, families are afraid of confronting bereavement and under pressure to prepare for death by making decisions about death-related tr

The many faces of depression following spousal bereavement.

While it is becoming increasingly clear that mood disorders tend to be chronic, intermittent and/or recurrent conditions with different manifestations over time, little is known of the variability or course of mood disorders that are associated with severe psychosocial stress. This paper reports on the prevalence and course of major, minor, and subsyndromal depressions in 328 widows and widowers followed prospectively from 2 to 25 months following one of the most disruptive of all naturally occurring stressors, spousal bereavement. The results are consistent with the following conclusions: (1)

The effect of living alone on bereavement symptoms.

The author reports on a study of widows and widowers who were followed for one year after the deaths of their spouses. The study shows that bereavement itself rather than the effects of living alone influences the occurrence of depressive symptoms in widows and widowers at one month. The data gathered also support the idea that younger people who have lost a spouse tend to show more physical depressive symptoms and to require hospitalization more often than either matched married controls or older widows and widowers at one year.

Care of Bereaved Persons : A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement after the death of someone close is universal, and clinicians may be uncertain if or what interventions may be beneficial. PURPOSE: To synthesize effects of health care interventions for bereaved children and adults. DATA SOURCES: Eight databases were searched from inception in September 2025, supplemented with screening reviews, guidelines, federal register entries, and expert input. STUDY SELECTION: Dual independent reviewers selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing interventions for bereaved or soon-to-be bereaved persons with usual care, no interven

Bereavement and mental health factors associated with seeking and receiving support following loss among Canadian bereaved adults.

PURPOSE: The death of a loved one is one of life's most ubiquitous events that can increase risk of mental health difficulties. Bereavement support is one of the few factors influencing grief-related mental health outcomes that can be modified after bereavement. This study sought to determine the proportion of bereaved people that want and receive support from different sources following a bereavement, and the bereavement and mental health-related factors associated with wanting and receiving bereavement support. METHODS: Data was derived from a cross-sectional survey of bereaved adults (n =

Psychological Distress among Japanese University Students after Parental Bereavement.

Although parental bereavement during childhood or adolescence increases the risk of depression, few studies focus on young adult Japanese who have lost a parent. This study investigates the risk of psychological distress among Japanese young adults who experienced parental bereavement during childhood or adolescence (bereavement group), comparing their mental health with non-bereaved students (control group). A questionnaire survey was performed on 6385 students at A University, following the Japanese version of Kessler 6 (K6) to assess psychological distress. In total, 1508 students (42 in th

Examining the Associations Between Substance Misuse and Suicide Bereavement.

Focusing on the understudied question of substance misuse among suicide bereaved adults we investigated patterns of binge drinking and non-prescribed drug use among a recently bereaved sample (n = 1,132). Comparing our respondents to the non-bereaved, those in the 2022 National Survey of Drug Use and Health (n = 71,369), we did not find heightened problematical substance misuses among our respondents. With t-tests and multiple regression analyses we examined whether binge drinkers and non-prescribed drug users had heightened levels of grief difficulties, PTSD, self-blaming and depression compa
