Recently, ultra-thin bronchoscopy has made it possible to observe smaller bronchi not visualized using standard techniques. We describe a case of pulmonary mucormycosis with cavitation, diagnosed using an ultra-thin bronchoscope. A 15-year-old girl with acute myeloid leukaemia had taken oral prednisolone, 60 mg/day, for graft versus host disease after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. She was admitted to our hospital with fever and a large cavitary lesion in the right hilum. Using an ultra-thin bronchoscope, the interior of the cavity in the superior segment of the right lower lobe was

Rare cases of acute mucormycosis in immunocompromised persons have been attributed to Cunninghamella bertholletiae. We report the first known case of this organism causing a chronic, indolent, systemic disease clinically similar to entomophthoramycosis. Cunninghamella bertholletiae is an opportunistic pathogen whose morbidity may be underappreciated because it is usually considered to be a laboratory contaminant.

Cunninghamella bertholletiae and Rhizopus microsporus are clinically important Mucorales that frequently exhibit mixed peaks in chromatograms from conventional Sanger sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Intragenomic ITS heterogeneity has been reported in R. microsporus but has not yet been characterized in Cunninghamella species. This study investigated ITS patterns in nine C. bertholletiae, three Cunninghamella echinulata, and two R. microsporus isolates collected in Taiwan. The ITS-D1/D2 regions were examined by PCR, cloning, and Sanger sequencing; one C. bertholletia

We report the autopsy findings of a case of disseminated mucormycosis caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae, a rare pathogenic fungus of the family Mucoraceae. The patient was a 49-year-old woman with B-lymphoblastic leukemia with hyperdiploidy, who died of progressive heart failure 4 months after induction chemotherapy successfully brought about complete remission of the leukemia. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) had been administered along with anti-neoplastic drugs, and her blood neutrophil count was markedly elevated. Autopsy revealed disseminated mycotic thromboembolism and

Invasive fungal infections in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia have been a major cause of mortality. Recent reports have described increasing incidence of invasive non-Aspergillus mold infections in patients with hematological malignancies. It is always challenging to treat invasive fungal infection and underlying hematological malignancies successfully. Here we report a girl with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia who developed disseminated Cunninghamella bertholletiae infection during induction chemotherapy. This case illustrates the difficulties of diagnosis and treatment of i

Low-value vegetable oils of Macauba pulp (Acrocomia aculeata) and Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) were esterified with methanol under heterogeneous acid catalysis conditions. The characterization of the raw vegetable oils revealed high free fatty acid and moisture content. The heterogeneous acid catalysts were prepared by co-condensation upon the grafting of propylsulfonic acid on MCM-41 (Pr-HSO3/MCM-41) and SBA-15 (Pr-HSO3/SBA-15) mesoporous silica materials. The catalysts were used in the esterification of the Macauba (Acrocomia aculeata) and Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) oils. The yie

BACKGROUND: Cunninghamella bertholletiae (C. bertholletiae), a rare yet highly virulent species within the Mucorales order, predominantly affects individuals with compromised immune systems. Disseminated infections caused by this pathogen frequently lead to severe complications, underscoring the necessity for prompt diagnosis and aggressive therapeutic interventions. Invasive fungal diseases (IFDs) continue to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality among kidney transplant recipients, characterized by elevated incidence and mortality rates. The early and precise identification of fungal pa

Mucormycosis is receiving much more attention because of its high morbidity and extremely high mortality rate in immunosuppressed populations. In this study, we isolated a Cunnignhamella bertholletiae Z2 strain from a skin lesion of a 14 year, 9 months old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who die of infection from the Z2 strain. Genome sequencing was performed after isolation and amplification of the Z2 strain to reveal potential virulence factors and pathogenic mechanisms. The results showed that the genome size of the Z2 strain is 30.9 Mb with 9213 genes. Mucoral specific virulence fac

Mucormycosis caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae (C. bertholletiae) is a rare opportunistic infection in patients with hematological malignancies (HM), with high mortality rates. Herein, we first report a case of pulmonary mucormycosis (PM) with C. bertholletiae in a 25-year-old male recently diagnosed with T-lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL). The diagnosis was established through chest computed tomography (CT), metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), as well as histopathological examination. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining of the sur

Cunninghamella bertholletiae is a rare cause of invasive mucormycosis. We report the case of a 42-year-old Thai woman who suffered from disseminated C. bertholletiae infection. The patient developed dry cough, sharp shooting pain in the left buttock referred to the left leg, and fever 1 month after undergoing deceased-donor kidney transplantation. Radiographic studies exhibited multiple pulmonary cavities, osteomyelitis of the sacral spine, epidural abscess along the lumbrosacral spine, and paravertebral soft tissue involvement. Surgical debridement of the epidural abscess concurrent with prol

Infections caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae, an opportunistic fungal organism, have an extremely high mortality rate. A fatal case of C. bertholletiae fungal pneumonia occurred in a man who had received an allogeneic bone marrow transplant. Aggressive debridement and high-dose liposomal amphotericin B failed to eradicate the infection. Right lung tissue samples obtained during lobectomy were assayed for amphotericin B concentrations by high-performance liquid chromatography, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determinations of amphotericin B against C. bertholletiae were determin

Zygomycosis is an emerging, opportunistic fungal infection particularly affecting immunocomprised patients. We report the case of a 10-year-old girl who developed pulmonary zygomycosis because of Cunninghamella bertholletiae 1 year after undergoing bone marrow transplantation complicated with severe cutaneous and digestive graft-versus-host disease. Treatment with surgery and liposomal amphotericin B followed by posaconazole successfully treated the infection.

A 42-year-old man diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia complained of progressive swelling of the right side of his face with pain 11 days after the third cycle of consolidation therapy with high-dose arabinosylcytosine-cytarabine. Head and neck magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass lesion in his right maxillary sinus with parapharyngeal involvement, which included the right masseter muscle, intraorbital involvement, and an abscess in his brain. Chest computed tomography revealed peribronchial small nodules in his right upper lobe and a necrotic tumor in his right lower lobe. Molds identifi

Members of the order Mucorales are emerging invasive molds that cause infections in immunocompromised patients. However, little is known about the relation between different species of Mucorales and their virulence in invasive pulmonary mucormycosis. Based upon our earlier epidemiological studies, we hypothesized that Cunninghamella bertholletiae would demonstrate increased virulence. Therefore, we studied the relative virulence of C. bertholletiae (CB), Rhizopus oryzae (RO), R. microsporus (RM), and Mucor circinelloides (MC) in experimental invasive pulmonary mucormycosis in persistently neut

This is the first reported case of a patient who developed fungal pneumonia caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae (= C. elegans) following cord blood transplantation and who showed a reversed halo sign on a chest computed tomography scan (CT). In addition, the pathological findings related to the reversed halo sign are described in detail for the first time. The patient died due to respiratory failure and at autopsy, a consolidation corresponding to the reversed halo sign noted on CT was found histologically to be composed of a central infarct with some retained air spaces surrounded by a per

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a life-threatening complication that occurs in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients. Among mucormycosis patients, those infected with Cunninghamella bertholletiae have the poorest prognosis because of the high virulence and angioinvasive nature of this organism. Despite its high vascular invasiveness, pseudoaneurysm caused by C. bertholletiae in HSCT recipients has rarely been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old HSCT recipient experienced recurrent fever, cough and pain after HSCT. Teicoplanin, acyclovir, posaconazole and caspofungin we

BACKGROUND: Fungal infection may develop because of immunosuppression after organ transplantation, in which invasive types, such as Aspergillus and Mucorales, fungi cause morbidity. We present a case of disseminated mucormycosis due to Cunninghamella bertholletiae after ABO-incompatible living donor liver transplantation (LDLT).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old man with decompensated liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma underwent an ABO-incompatible LDLT using a graft procured from his son, who had a different blood type. Rituximab and mycophenolate mofetil were administered 3 weeks b

Cunninghamella bertholletiae as a rare cause of mucormycosis has been described almost exclusively in immunosuppressed patients such as hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients. The infection is associated with high rates of mortality despite aggressive treatment. We describe a 40-year-old male with HLA-haploidentical HSCT developed fungal pneumonitis caused by C. bertholletiae complicated by graft failure and prolonged neutropenia. The patient died 102 days after HSCT despite early use of posaconazole and amphotericin B, which are believed to be the two most effective antifungal a
