Spectroscopic Decoding of Ethanol-Water Clusters in Alcoholic Beverages.

Recent advances in spectroscopic techniques have provided molecular insights into the supramolecular structures of ethanol-water clusters (EWC) in alcoholic beverages. Sensory quality of these beverages is not only governed by trace flavor compounds but is fundamentally influenced by the dynamic, hydrogen-bonded networks formed between ethanol and water molecules. This review summarizes progress in elucidating the structural characteristics, stability, and transformation mechanisms of EWC across different alcoholic matrices, with a particular emphasis on contributions from multiscale spectrosc

Potentially addictive properties of sugar-sweetened beverages among adolescents.

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) increase risk of cardiometabolic disease. Young people consume the largest amounts of SSBs and have experienced the greatest relative gains in obesity in the past several decades. There is evidence of addictive properties of both caffeine and sugar, the primary ingredients in SSBs, but little research into such properties of SSBs in naturally occurring consumption patterns. Thus, in this exploratory study, we sought to examine potentially addictive properties of SSBs during a 3-day SSB cessation intervention in overweight and obese adolescents who typically con

Fructose-rich beverages and risk of gout in women.

CONTEXT: Fructose-rich beverages such as sugar-sweetened soda and orange juice can increase serum uric acid levels and, thus, the risk of gout, but prospective data on the relationship are limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between intake of fructose-rich beverages and fructose and the risk of incident gout among women. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In the Nurses' Health Study, a US prospective cohort study spanning 22 years (1984-2006), we analyzed data from 78,906 women with no history of gout at baseline who provided information on intake of beverages and fructose throug

Monitoring of laryngopharyngeal reflux: influence of meals and beverages.

Ambulatory 24-hour double-probe pH monitoring seems to be the best test to measure reflux. Artifacts caused by intake of acid foods and beverages have to be excluded, necessitating a time-consuming manual review of the 24-hour data. Dietary restrictions used to bypass these artifacts would interfere with the normal daily life situation. Therefore, the influence of food and beverages ingested during the monitoring period was studied. Data from 252 patients who underwent double-probe pH monitoring were analyzed, first by visual inspection of the 24-hour tracing and second by leaving out the inta

Influence of seven beverages on salicylate disposition in humans.

OBJECTIVE: Aspirin administered orally is one of most widely self-prescribed drugs to treat headaches or other pains. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the influence of different beverages may be used to help in the ingestion of an aspirin tablet on the pharmacokinetic parameters of this drug. METHOD: This study was undertaken in five healthy volunteers. Seven beverages were tested: water, tea, coffee, orange juice, milk, beer and 40 degrees distilled alcohol. After plasma extraction, aspirin and salicylic acid were measured by HPLC with UV detection. The main pharmacokinetic para

Relation of female infertility to consumption of caffeinated beverages.

Several studies have reported an association between caffeine intake and delay to conception. To study this relation further, the authors examined caffeine use in 1,050 women with primary infertility and 3,833 women who had recently given birth during the period 1981-1983 in the United States and Canada. The cases were separated by the cause of their infertility: ovulatory factor, tubal disease, cervical factor, endometriosis, or idiopathic infertility. The relative risks of each type of infertility associated with caffeine were calculated using separate logistic regression models and controll

Dislodgement of impacted oesophageal foreign bodies with carbonated beverages.

Carbonated beverages release sufficient carbon dioxide when ingested, to distend the oesophagus, relax the lower oesophageal sphincter and to force the passage of impacted meat and other foreign bodies into the stomach. Of 28 patients with foreign bodies in the oesophagus, eight had them dislodged after ingestion of barium sulphate suspension, whereas carbonated soda water was used successfully in 16 out of 20 patients with a normal oesophagus or with oesophageal motility disorders and organic strictures. Carbonated beverages may be used as the first-line treatment of acute episodes of oesopha

Sugar-sweetened beverages, low/no-calorie beverages, fruit juice and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease defined by fatty liver index: the SWEET project.

BACKGROUND: Sweetened beverage intake may play a role in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) development, but scientific evidence on their role is limited. This study examined associations between sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), low/no-calorie beverages (LNCB) and fruit juice (FJ) intakes and NAFLD in four European studies. METHODS: Data for 42,024 participants of Lifelines Cohort, NQPlus, PREDIMED-Plus and Alpha Omega Cohort were cross-sectionally analysed. NAFLD was assessed using Fatty Liver Index (FLI) (≥60). Restricted cubic spline analyses were used to visualize dose-response ass

Baseline Assessment of Children's Meals and Healthy Beverage Options Prior to a State-Level Healthy Default Beverage (HDB) Law.

In January 2020, Hawai'i became the second state with a healthy default beverage (HDB) law, requiring restaurants to offer HDBs with their children's meals. This observational study presents baseline characteristics of restaurants with a children's menu and meal. The study describes pre-law beverage options to inform future HDB policy language, implementation, and evaluation. Between November and December 2019, data were collected from a statewide sample of unique restaurants (N = 383) with health inspection permits. Restaurants were assessed separately for a children's menu and meal using web

Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax Intensification, Beverage Affordability, and Food-Security Safeguards: Global Evidence from 2022-2024.

Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) taxes aim to discourage unhealthy consumption, but their implications for broader food affordability also need monitoring. We examine whether changes in SSB excise-tax shares between 2022 and 2024 were associated with beverage affordability, healthy-diet affordability, and food insecurity. The analysis links WHO beverage-tax data with FAO food-system indicators and World Bank controls. First-difference models include 83-113 countries, depending on the outcome, with adjustment for multiple testing. A one-percentage-point increase in excise share was associated wit

Ingesting menthol in a beverage may alter the sweating response during passive heat stress, but only when the beverage is cold.

Consuming cold fluids during heat stress can alter sweating responses; however, it remains unclear why chemical activation of cold-sensitive transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) with menthol only induces a cold sensation. Animal models propose that complete cold transduction with TRPM8 chemical stimulation must be combined with physical cooling to impact thermoeffector responses. To address this, 12 participants (5 females and 7 males; 22 ± 5 yr; 79.5 ± 15.0 kg; 1.8 ± 0.1 m) conducted four passive heating protocols in random order where, within trial, they consumed 3.2 mL/kg body

Modification of food and beverages to reduce the erosive potential.

In view of the increasing prevalence of dental erosion and erosive tooth wear, preventive approaches are increasingly becoming the focus of interest. A proven way to reduce the erosive potential of food and drinks is adding calcium. However, whole meals and the taste of calcium-enriched drinks have not been studied. This study aimed to create erosion-protective recipes for food and beverages. In part 1, erosive meals were modified with calcium-rich ingredients. In part 2, varying amounts of CaCl₂ were added to acidic drinks. A sensory panel assessed flavour. Caries-free human teeth served as e

The Influence of Beverages on Resin Composites: An In Vitro Study.

Dental composites, through their structural diversity, represent the biomaterials frequently used in dental reconstructive therapy. The aim of our study was to observe the influence of different beverage environment conditions on seven types of obturation dental materials with different compositions. Our research focused on the surface modification analysis of the materials after the immersion in the different beverages; in this regard, we used the EDAX technique correlated with the energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The pH of the drinks and that of the simulated saliva solution were

[Health counseling about alcoholic beverage consumption].

This paper reviews the scientific evidence on the relationship between consumption of alcoholic beverages and health, at the individual and population levels. This evidence is used to inform the health counselling on such consumption. We propose that during the individual clinical encounter, the counselling should be adapted to clinical characteristics of the patient (mainly age and cardiovascular risk), consider the patient preferences (because there are alternatives to alcohol for cardiovascular prevention for those who do not like alcohol), and prudent ('primum non nocere'). For the populat

Dental caries and beverage consumption in young children.

OBJECTIVE: Dental caries is a common, chronic disease of childhood. The impact of contemporary changes in beverage patterns, specifically decreased milk intakes and increased 100% juice and soda pop intakes, on dental caries in young children is unknown. We describe associations among caries experience and intakes of dairy foods, sugared beverages, and nutrients and overall diet quality in young children. METHODS: Subjects (n = 642) are members of the Iowa Fluoride Study, a cohort followed from birth. Food and nutrient intakes were obtained from 3-day diet records analyzed at 1 (n = 636), 2 (
