The medical chart is presumed to be an impartial record of a patient's history, examination, and treatment. This study was designed to determine if hand surgeons introduce selective bias into the medical record. Fifty consecutive new patients were referred to a hand surgery practice for presumed carpal tunnel syndrome. Forty-four patients were diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome and were eligible for study inclusion. Prior to evaluation, all patients wrote in free-response fashion and diagrammed their symptom quality and location. Surgeon dictations from these visits were then evaluated agai

Electronic health record (EHR) systems capture patient information inconsistently, with patients generally contributing more data when they are sick than when they are healthy. This creates "informed presence," systematic differences between captured and noncaptured data, potentially biasing association estimates. There is growing interest in methods that account for informed presence, but practical approaches for conceptualizing, identifying, and addressing this bias in applied EHR research have received limited attention. Focusing on longitudinal settings, we present a conceptual framework f

Individuals with heightened anger tend to interpret ambiguous situations as hostile, maintaining their anger. Importantly, both hostile interpretation bias and anger have been linked to detrimental outcomes such as substance use disorders and suicide. Hostile interpretation bias modification (IBMH) has been found to efficaciously reduce hostile attribution bias, but findings have been mixed on its ability to reduce anger. One factor that may contextualize these findings are symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which have been found to be associated with both hostile interpretation

Background: Dominant models of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) implicate threat-related attention biases in both the development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress symptoms. However, the ability to better understand and modify threat-related attention biases in PTSD has been hampered by the low reliability of attention bias measures more generally. Methods: The current study adopts a new approach to calculate attention bias from a dot-probe task, response-based attention bias (RB-AB) computation, in a sample of 689 individuals reporting significantly elevated PTSD symptoms who partic

This study seeks to better understand mechanisms of bias against formerly incarcerated and ethnically minoritized job applicants as well as the interactive effects of those two identities. In a sample of 358 hiring managers in the United States, the 2 (incarceration history) x 4 (ethnicity) experiment will manipulate incarceration history and ethnicity through job application materials, and measure hireability, and perception of job applicants along dimensions of sociability/warmth, competence, and morality. We will use a moderated mediation model to test hypotheses regarding a main effect of

Hostile Attribution Bias (HAB) has been demonstrated to exert adverse impacts on reactive aggression (RA). Consequently, it is essential to investigate its prevention strategies and the brain-level alterations induced by these strategies. Cognitive Bias Modification of Interpretation (CBMI) has exhibited potential in modifying HAB. The current objective of this research is to explore its influence on individuals' hostile attributions bias and reactive aggression, and conduct an exploratory study on the underlying brain change mechanisms associated with behavioral alterations. This article describes the Behaviors from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes-Treatment Scale (BIAS-TS), a self-report measure of experiences of active harm, passive harm, active facilitation, and passive facilitation. The BIAS-TS was derived from the Behaviors from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes (BIAS) Map, and provided reliable, replicable, and stable indexes of different harmful and facilitatory behaviors that people encounter in their day-to-day lives from multiple sources (Studies 1 and 2). The BIAS-TS subscales were uniquely associated with concurrent subjective well-being, and were dis

Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), represent an alarming burden on healthcare systems. Differences in the prevalence, progression and outcomes of CMD are significantly sex specific, as are differences between premenopause and postmenopause. These differences lie in the distinct body fat distributions and lipid and lipoprotein profiles associated with estrogens, particularly 17β-estradiol (E2), which play a central protective role in female cardiometabolic health. Premeno

Manifestation determination reviews (MDRs) are federally mandated as a condition of extended removal for students with disabilities. Despite the potentially significant consequences MDRs hold for students with disabilities, data on the role that biases play in these high-stakes decisions are limited. This investigation sought to elucidate potential biases affecting MDRs across 105 school districts (N = 517) using two newly developed MDR measures assessing MDR knowledge and perceived student intentionality. In an online investigation using experimental and cross-sectional strategies, school per

IMPORTANCE: A goal of health care is to reduce symptoms and improve health status, whereas continuing dubious treatments can contribute to complacency, discourage the search for alternatives, and lead to shortfalls in care.
OBJECTIVE: To test a potential bias in intuitive reasoning following a marginal improvement in symptoms after a dubious treatment (post hoc bias).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Surveys eliciting treatment recommendations for hypothetical patients were sent to community members throughout North America recruited via an online survey platform in the early winter months

BACKGROUND: Recent research has shown that pregnant individuals experience weight stigma throughout gestation, including negative comments and judgement associated with gestational weight gain (GWG). Weight bias internalization (WBI) is often a result of exposure to weight stigma and is detrimental to biopsychological health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to explore WBI in pregnancy and compare scores based on maternal weight-related factors including pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), obesity diagnosis and excessive GWG.
METHODS: Pregnant individuals in Canada and USA completed a

This research examines the effects of a cognitive bias modification procedure for facilitating inferential flexibility, on inferences, mood, and state rumination. Participants were presented with training scenarios, followed by two consecutive inferences for each scenario. In the training condition, participants repeatedly practiced shifting from a negative inference to a positive one. But in the control condition, the two inferences were of the same valence and no shifting occurred. The training successfully promoted the intended inferential shift on new scenarios (d = 0.72). Moreover, traine

The asymmetrical structure of the human brain is reflected not only by innate interhemispheric differences but also by lateralization in neurological disease. We tested if unilateral autoimmune optic neuritis (aON) manifests more frequently on the left than the right eye in clinical and neuroimaging terms and whether Google searches for aON symptoms reflect this bias, too. We employed a retrospective analysis of a patient cohort from 2009 to 2019 with 552 unilateral aONs and 374 corresponding MRI imaging data sets. Searchmetrics Suite keywords tool was applied for the analysis of Google search

A prominent source of polarised and entrenched beliefs is confirmation bias, where evidence against one's position is selectively disregarded. This effect is most starkly evident when opposing parties are highly confident in their decisions. Here we combine human magnetoencephalography (MEG) with behavioural and neural modelling to identify alterations in post-decisional processing that contribute to the phenomenon of confirmation bias. We show that holding high confidence in a decision leads to a striking modulation of post-decision neural processing, such that integration of confirmatory evi

Insertion sequences (IS) are common transposable elements in Archaea. Intergenic IS elements are usually less harmful than intragenic ISs, simply because they are less likely to disrupt host gene function. However, because regulatory sequences are intergenic and upstream of genes, we hypothesized that not all intergenic regions are selectively equivalent for IS insertion. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing the distributions of intergenic IS elements within 155 fully sequenced archaeal genomes. Of the 22 genomes with enough IS elements for statistical analysis, five have significantly fewer

Several reports suggest a male fetal preponderance in a variety of complications of pregnancy attributable to severe placental dysfunction (SPD). However, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Our primary objective was to explore the relationship between fetal sex and the spectrum of conditions implicated in abnormal placentation. We identified singleton pregnancies with a fetus delivered between 20 + 0 and 32 + 6 weeks of gestation with one or more pregnancy complications attributed to SPD (severe pre-eclampsia, intra-uterine fetal death, intra-uterine growth restriction, abnormal Doppler

OBJECTIVE: Two prospective studies in patient with brain tumours were performed comparing the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). The first assessed their feasibility and the second compared their diagnostic accuracy against a four-hour neuropsychological assessment (NPA). The introduction of the NPA decreased accrual and retention rates. We were therefore concerned regarding potential selection bias.
METHODS: Ninety-two patients were prospectively accrued and subsequently divided into three categories: a) no NPA required b) withdrew consent to N
