Ocular pharmacology of bicyclic hexahydroaporphines.

This paper explores the ocular hypotensive actions of bicyclic analogs of hexahydroaporphine (HHA), specifically nor-HHA, in an attempt to shed light on the mechanism(s) by which they lower intraocular pressure (IOP). Studies involving the measurement of IOP and aqueous humor production were conducted in ocular normotensive albino rabbits, while those involving smooth muscle contractility utilized isolated bovine iris. The ability of nor-HHA to produce a sustained drop in IOP is linked to both a functioning adrenergic nervous system and the availability of the products of cyclooxygenase metabo

Implementing a bicycle safety workshop.

Each year almost 400,000 children ages 14 and younger are treated in emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries. An additional 500,000 young riders are treated in other settings (private pediatrician's office, urgent care centers) (American Academy of Pediatrics, 1991). An awareness has been raised this past decade toward programs that target injury prevention and promote safety and health in children. The implementation of bicycle safety workshops and "bicycle rodeos" are just one of many programs that educate young children on the techniques of safe, yet fun, bicycling.

Road characteristics and bicycle accidents.

In Umeå, Sweden, defects in the physical road surface contributed to nearly half of the single bicycle accidents. The total social cost of these injuries to people amount to at least SEK 20 million (SEK 60,000 or about USD 8,500 per accident), which corresponds to the estimated loss of "eight life equivalents a year". Improved winter maintenance seems to have the greatest injury prevention potential and would probably reduce the number of injuries considerably, whereas improved road quality and modification of kerbs would reduce the most severe injuries. A local traffic safety program should t

[Injuries and their causes in bicycle accidents].

From April to September 1984 456 bicycle accidents were registered (73% adults, 27% children) and classified according to type and severity of injury and cause of accident. Of 594 injuries those of the upper extremities were predominant followed by mostly severe head injuries. The commonest injury was the fracture of clavicle and thereafter fractures of the radial head and distal radial fractures in children. 59% of accidents occurred without involvement of another person. 58% of accidents were caused by the bicycle riders themselves.

Fragrances of Cage Bicyclic Benzene Bioisosteres.

Cubane, bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP) and bicyclo[2.2.2]octane derivatives of benzene-containing fragrances (e. g., benzyl esters) were prepared to evaluate whether odor characteristics would be retained to give same or similar scents. It was observed that each molecule maintained a distinctive aroma, sometimes quite similar to the benzene ring containing fragrance, and in other cases very different, with several perceived to produce high intensity odors. These results suggest that saturated cage bicyclic hydrocarbon bioisosteres have potential as new tools for the discovery of novel fragrances.

Pediatric Electrical Bicycle Road Accidents.

INTRODUCTION: The use of electric bicycles (EBs) among children younger than 18 years of age is rapidly increasing worldwide and becoming a substantial contributor to road accidents. We analyzed patterns and severity of pediatric bicycle-related injuries, comparing children riding EBs and classic bicycles (CBs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study (January 2016-December 2018) of patients arriving at our medical center due to a bicycle accident. Data were collected from medical records and included demographics, injury characteristics, treatment, and outcomes. RESULTS: Of 56

Bicycle-related cervical spine injuries.

BACKGROUND: Bicyclists are vulnerable road users. The aim of this paper was to describe all bicycle-related traumatic cervical spine injuries (CSIs) in the South-East region of Norway (2015-2019), and to investigate whether certain types of CSIs are typical for bicyclists. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of prospectively collected registry data of all CSIs in the South-East region of Norway (3.0 million inhabitants), from 2015 to 2019. Patient characteristics, injury types, and treatment were summarized with descriptive statistics. Bayesian multivariable logistic regression was used to id

[Traumatic bicycle handlebar hernia in a child].

Traumatic abdominal wall hernia in children caused by a bicycle handlebar is a rare injury. This is a case report of a 15-year-old boy with a traumatic hernia in the right groin, where a physical examination revealed a small bulge in the right inguinal region, and an ultrasonography confirmed the diagnosis. The condition was initially treated conservatively. However, the patient had surgery performed three days later because of pain. Surgical repair with open layered closure is the preferred method. Laparoscopic sutured repair may also be performed, especially if diagnostic laparoscopy is perf

On the Skill of Balancing While Riding a Bicycle.

Humans have ridden bicycles for over 200 years, yet there are no continuous measures of how skill differs between novice and expert. To address this knowledge gap, we measured the dynamics of human bicycle riding in 14 subjects, half of whom were skilled and half were novice. Each subject rode an instrumented bicycle on training rollers at speeds ranging from 1 to 7 m/s. Steer angle and rate, steer torque, bicycle speed, and bicycle roll angle and rate were measured and steering power calculated. A force platform beneath the roller assembly measured the net force and moment that the bicycle, r

Editorial. Bicycle injuries and injury prevention.

In 1989, long before this journal added injuries to its title, it published two papers on childhood injuries and I was asked to write an editorial for this occasion. I chose the title "Challenges for Injury Prevention: Two Neglected Aspects" because I thought the papers neglected to mention the inadequacy of injury statistics (at the time there were no emergency department data) and also failed to emphasize the public health importance of childhood injuries. It is instructive, therefore, to compare this issue's offerings with how matters stood nearly 25 years ago and see what progress we've ma

Bicycle helmet efficacy: a meta-analysis.

Bicycle helmet efficacy was quantified using a formal meta-analytic approach based on peer-reviewed studies. Only those studies with individual injury and helmet use data were included. Based on studies from several countries published in the period 1987-1998, the summary odds ratio estimate for efficacy is 0.40 (95% confidence interval 0.29, 0.55) for head injury, 0.42 (0.26, 0.67) for brain injury, 0.53 (0.39, 0.73) for facial injury and 0.27 (0.10, 0.71) for fatal injury. This indicates a statistically significant protective effect of helmets. Three studies provided neck injury results that

Abdominal injuries caused by bicycle handlebars.

OBJECTIVE: To find out whether the increase in the number of children admitted with injuries from mountain bicycle handlebars is attributed to recent changes in the design of children's bicycles. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Teaching general hospital, Israel. SUBJECTS: 76 children who presented with abdominal injuries caused by bicycle handlebars. RESULTS: In 12 of the 76 children, there was an imprint of the handlebar edge on the hypochondrium. The most common injuries were isolated ruptures of spleen or liver, (14 and 11 patients, respectively). Five of the 25 patients were oper

Head injuries from bicycle accidents.

This study comprises a total of 159 victims from bicycle accidents treated as inpatients at the Department of Neurosurgery, University of Bonn between January 1987 and June 1995. It was our aim to define the severity and features of bicycle-related head injuries in a defined population. Our results show that 33% of admitted bicycle victims sustained severe head injuries (Glasgow Coma Score 3-8). Neurosurgical operations were performed in 49% of patients and were mainly related to the evacuation of an extracerebral hematoma. Of the 159 bicycle victims, 112 (70%) made a good recovery, 11 (7%) re

The bicycle spoke injury: an avoidable accident?

A prospective study of the bicycle spoke injury over a 1-year period included a total of 71 spoke injuries. Of these, 67 injuries occurred on an adult bicycle and four occurred on a child's bicycle. All children sustained ankle and foot injuries, which consisted of contusion and superficial abrasion (N = 45), skin loss (N = 10), skin laceration (N = 4), and undisplaced fractures (N = 12). A biomechanical study was conducted to investigate the use of a protective cover over the wheel to prevent the foot from slipping between the spokes. Wind resistance studies showed that a cover with a mesh si

[Bicycle rider's ulnar nerve paralysis].

The ulnar neuropathy in bicycle riders is a less common occurrence, due to a local damage of the nerve on the level of the ulnar tunnel. It has been described in neurological literature only a few times, and hence its good prognosis is not sufficiently known. Within a short time two patients of this disease were transferred to our clinic for operation. After a local space-occupying growth in the tunnel could be excluded by MR or sonography of the wrist, we discouraged performance of an operative procedure. The patients' complaints and the neurological deficits vanished in a few weeks. Ulnar ne
