Negative correlations between bile reflux gastritis and Helicobacter pylori infection.

OBJECTIVE: There are a few articles to study the relationship between bile reflux gastritis (BRG) and H. pylori infection, and the results are debatable. This study set out to determine the relationship between BRG and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients from January, 1st 2013 to January, 1st, 2021 were divided into two groups based on whether they had BRG. The control group was got by 1:1 propensity-score matching (PSM) based on age and sex. Then, the relationship between BRG and H. pylori in patients was analyzed via Chi-squared test and

[Bile acid reflux following stomach surgery on rats (author's transl)].

Using rats in a standardized animal experiment, the extent of duodenogastric reflux was studied eight months postoperatively following SPV with and without pyloroplasty. The reflux was determined by enzymatically testing the concentration of bile acid secretion withdrawn from the stomach intraoperatively. Serving as comparison were laparotomies, simple pyloroplasties, and the obligatory reflux models: resection after BII without enteroanastomosis. After SPV with and without pyloroplasty, the extent of duodenogastric reflux was less than in the control group. Specimens with simple pyloroplasty

Impact of the composition of gastric reflux bile acids on Barrett's oesophagus.

BACKGROUND: The effect of the composition of reflux bile acids, especially the ratio of hydrophobic to hydrophilic ones, on the development of Barrett's oesophagus has not been fully investigated in human studies. AIMS: To evaluate the influence of the bile acid composition of gastric juice on Barrett's oesophagus, a prospective study was designed. METHODS: Fifty patients with and 100 patients without Barrett's oesophagus were enrolled. For all enrolled patients, gastric juice was collected by the endoscopic procedure for bile acid analysis. The ratio of hydrophobic to hydrophilic bile acids

[Effect of microcrystalline cellulose on alkaline gastritis due to bile reflux].

Biliary acids present in gastric content due to a duodena-gastric reflux have been blamed for attacking the gastric mucosa through detergent action on the defensive barrier. This harmful action produces an inflammatory lesion on this mucosa, resulting in a chronic gastritis which is clinically expressed by epigastric pain, heartburn and vomits of biliar aspect among other symptoms, and it has constituted a clinical entity named Alcaline Gastritis by Duodenal-gastric Reflux, more recently, Reactive Gastritis according to the Sydney System. Among dietetic fibers, cellulose has been reported in r

Incidence of bile reflux in gastric ulcer and after partial gastrectomy.

Duodenogastric bile reflux (DGBR) is reported to be increased in patients with gastric ulcer (GU) and following Billroth I partial gastrectomy (BIPG). pH, total bacterial counts, and total and free bile acids were measured in gastric juice aspirated hourly for 24 h in 6 patients with GU, 7 patients with a BIPG performed for GU and in 8 healthy normal controls. Intragastric pH was significantly higher in the BIPG group during the day (P less than 0.001) and at night (P less than 0.001) compared with normals and the GU group. There were no differences between GUs and normal patients. Bile acid c

Helicobacter pylori may induce bile reflux: link between H pylori and bile induced injury to gastric epithelium.

Helicobacter pylori and duodenogastric reflux are both recognised as playing aetiological roles in chronic gastritis. This study investigated whether H pylori colonisation of the antral mucosa and duodenogastric reflux are independent phenomena or have a causal relationship. Thirty eight patients (15 men, 23 women) aged (mean (SD)) 48 (17) years participated. Each patient underwent gastroscopy. Antral biopsy specimens were taken to investigate H pylori colonisation. In addition BrIDA-99mTc/111In-DTPA scintigraphy was used to quantify duodenogastric reflux. H pylori positive patients who were f

Evaluation of bile reflux in HIDA images based on fluid mechanics.

We propose a new method to help physicians assess, using a hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid scan image, whether or not there is bile reflux into the stomach. The degree of bile reflux is an important index for clinical diagnosis of stomach diseases. The proposed method applies image-processing technology combined with a hydrodynamic model to determine the extent of bile reflux or whether the duodenum is also folded above the stomach. This condition in 2D dynamic images suggests that bile refluxes into the stomach, when endoscopy shows no bile reflux. In this study, we used optical flow to anal

Detection of bile reflux: in vivo validation of the Bilitec fibreoptic system.

The Bilitec ambulatory bile reflux monitor is advocated for the assessment of bile reflux. However, it has only been validated by bench top (in vitro) studies. This in vivo study used controlled 'iatrogenic' episodes of bile reflux to determine the ability of the Bilitec system to detect bile acids in the oesophageal lumen. At least 10 ml of fluid was aspirated from the stomach of each of 32 patients, and analysed quantitatively for total bile acids (TBA) and total bilirubin (TB). An in vitro assessment of this fluid with the Bilitec probe was performed initially. The Bilitec probe was then si

The role of bile reflux in the development of cold-restraint gastric lesions.

The study was designed to test whether or not bile reflux is necessary for the development of gastric mucosal lesions during cold-restraint stress in the rat. 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. They were randomized into 4 groups. Group 1 underwent sham operations with no cold-restraint stress. Group 2 underwent sham operations. Group 3 underwent pyloric ligation. Group 4 underwent bile duct ligation. Groups 2, 3, and 4 were subjected to cold-restraint stress for 3 hours at 4-6 degrees C in a Bollman cage. After the experimental procedure, the stomachs were removed under ether anesthesia

Gastroesophageal reflux disease poorly responsive to single-dose proton pump inhibitors in patients without Barrett's esophagus: acid reflux, bile reflux, or both?

OBJECTIVES: Studies using ambulatory pH and esophageal bile reflux monitoring (Bilitec) have shown that both acid reflux and duodeno-gastro-esophageal reflux (DGER) frequently occur in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A subset of patients with GERD has persistent reflux symptoms in spite of standard doses of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of acid and DGER in patients with reflux disease poorly responsive to PPIs. METHODS: Sixty-five patients (32 men, 44 +/- 2 yr) without Barrett's esophagus and with persistent heart

Healthy controls have as much bile reflux as gastric ulcer patients.

Data on duodenogastric reflux of bile in gastric ulcer are conflicting. We therefore measured intragastric bile acid concentration and its composition from individual bile acids, duodenogastric bile acid reflux rate, gastric emptying rate, and secretion rates of volume and acid in 30 patients with gastric ulcer and in 66 healthy controls, both in the fasting state and after feeding a liquid meal. Patients had higher gastric bile acid concentrations (p less than 0.05) than controls in the fasting state, but the overlap between the groups was considerable. In fasting patients with corpus ulcer,

Bile reflux gastritis cystica profunda: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Gastritis cystica profunda (GCP) is a rare gastric lesion involving cystic dilation of the gastric glands extending into the submucosa. It is usually observed at anastomotic sites in the stomach of patients who have undergone gastric procedures. Bile reflux GCP is rare in patients who have not undergone gastric surgery. Here, we report a rare case of a patient with GCP associated with bile reflux, who had no history of gastric surgery. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 50-year-old man presented with intermittent abdominal fullness for 2 years, along with nausea. He had never undergone gastric su
