Family studies of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa have yielded important information about the etiologies of these eating disorders. By contrast, little is known about familial factors of etiologic importance for binge-eating disorder (BED). The purpose of the current family history study was to assess the prevalence of comorbid psychopathology in a non-treatment seeking female sample of 31 probands with BED, 32 control probands without BED, and their 283 first-degree relatives. In-person semistructured clinical interviews were conducted with the probands, who also served as informants fo

This paper reviews the use of medication in the treatment of bulimia nervosa and of binge eating disorder. There is now compelling evidence from double blind, placebo-controlled studies that antidepressant medication is useful in the treatment of bulimia nervosa. What is less clear is which patients are most likely to benefit from antidepressant medications and how to best sequence the various therapeutic interventions available. The utility of antidepressant medications in bulimia nervosa has led to their evaluation in binge eating disorder. The limited information currently available suggest

A 70-year-old woman presented with morning stiffness, groin and knee pain, weight loss, and night sweats-initially suggestive of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). Laboratory tests showed elevated inflammatory markers, but imaging revealed a renal tumour. Following nephrectomy, symptoms resolved without sustained corticosteroid treatment. This case underscores the need to consider malignancy in patients with atypical or treatment-resistant PMR-like symptoms.

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, binge-eating disorder (BED) is classified as episodes of binge eating while not being hungry, eating too fast until feeling uncomfortably full, or eating in solitude with feelings of shame and disgust after eating, without compensatory mechanisms. The controversial disorder food addiction (FA) is characterized by overconsumption, cravings, failure to cut down on amounts of food, and withdrawal and tolerance to overeating. In this narrative review, we aimed to comprehensively characterize and compare BED and FA. We sea

INTRODUCTION: This resource is a web-based and self-contained self-learning module (SLM) on binge-eating disorder (BED) that runs utilizing Articulate software. Certain skills and knowledge are required to both interview and manage patients diagnosed with the disorder. Because BED may be encountered by medical students, this module can help inform the learning process.
METHODS: Software was utilized to develop an SLM for third-year medical students utilizing video clips demonstrating the evolution of a clinical BED case from presentation to follow-up over 10-12 weeks. The focus is on differen

The purpose of the present review is to provide a summary of the research findings on emotion regulation in Binge Eating Disorder (BED). Negative emotions and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies play a role in the onset and maintenance of binge eating in BED. Anger and sadness, along with negative emotions related to interpersonal experiences (i.e., disappointment, being hurt or loneliness), seem to be particularly relevant. Individuals with BED have a tendency to suppress and ruminate on their unwanted emotions, which leads to increased psychopathological thoughts and symptoms. Compared

The authors examined rapid response among 108 patients with binge eating disorder (BED) who were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 16-week treatments: fluoxetine, placebo, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) plus fluoxetine, or CBT plus placebo. Rapid response, defined as 65% or greater reduction in binge eating by the 4th treatment week, was determined by receiver operating characteristic curves. Rapid response characterized 44% of participants and was unrelated to participants' demographic or baseline characteristics. Participants with rapid response were more likely to achieve binge-eating remissi

OBJECTIVE: To review the use of topiramate for the treatment of binge-eating disorder (BED) associated with obesity.
DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE (1966-July 2006) and the Cochrane Database (2006, issue 3) were used to conduct an English-language literature search. Key search terms included eating disorder, binge-eating, and topiramate. Bibliographies of identified articles were examined for additional references.
DATA SYNTHESIS: BED is characterized by excessive food intake with lack of control during eating episodes, but without subsequent compensatory weight loss mechanisms, and is often associat

Bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge-eating disorder (BED) are separate entities with the common denominator of binge eating. In this chapter, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV) criteria for BN are reviewed, including both recurrent episodes of binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain in one whose self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body weight and shape. Two percent of adolescent females and 0.3% of adolescent males fulfill criteria for BN. Risk factors, medical complications of binge eating (vomiting, use of ipecac, d

OBJECTIVE: This study examined gender differences in patients with binge eating disorder (BED).
METHOD: Participants were 182 adults (35 male, 147 female) who were consecutively evaluated for outpatient clinical trials and met criteria for BED as outlined in the 4th ed. of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. They were administered a battery of measures to examine developmental, eating and weight-related disturbances, and psychological features associated with BED.
RESULTS: Men and women did not differ significantly on several developmental variables (age at first overw

OBJECTIVE: To examine negative mood as a proximal antecedent and reinforcing condition of binge eating in binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN).
METHOD: Using an ecological momentary assessment design, 20 women with BED, 20 women with BN, and 20 nonclinical control women were recruited from the community, provided with a portable minicomputer, and asked to rate their mood and list their thoughts at randomly-generated beep sounds and before, during, and after episodes of eating.
RESULTS: In both eating disorder groups mood before binge eating was more negative than before regul

OBJECTIVE: Questions have been raised about the validity of binge eating disorder (BED) as psycho-pathologically distinct from other forms of overeating. Our purpose was to ascertain whether BED individuals differed in important ways from nonbinging obese adults.
METHOD: BED adults were recruited from the community as were weight-matched (obese) and normal-weight control (NWC) groups. All groups were equivalent for age and gender distribution, and were assessed on several personality traits and eating behaviors.
RESULTS: BED individuals and obese controls did not differ on the personality tr

OBJECTIVE: To compare the microstructural eating behavior of obese patients with and without binge eating disorder (BED) after stress induction in laboratory.
METHOD: Forty-eight obese women were investigated. Seventeen were assigned to the group of BED. Group (BED vs. non-BED) by condition (stress vs. no stress) interaction effect on feeding variables, measured by a universal eating monitor, was tested. Stress was induced by the trier social stress test (TSST) and chocolate pudding served as laboratory food.
RESULTS: From the nonstress to the stress condition, patients with BED, when compar

This study examined eating patterns and breakfast consumption, and their relationships to weight and binge eating, in obese individuals with binge eating disorder (BED). One-hundred seventy-three consecutively evaluated men (n=46) and women (n=127) with BED were administered semi-structured interviews and self-report measures to assess the frequency of meals and snacks eaten, as well as binge eating and eating disorder features. Overall, those who consumed more frequent meals, particularly breakfast, and snacks, weighed less. Breakfast, which was eaten on a daily basis by less than half of par

OBJECTIVE: In the DSM-IV, individuals with binge eating disorder (BED) and those with purging disorder (PD) receive a diagnosis of eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS), suggesting no meaningful differences between clinical presentations. This article compares PD and BED on eating disorder severity and comorbid disorders.
METHOD: Individuals with PD (n = 33), DSM-IV BED (n = 23 with BMI >30 kg/m(2) , and n = 18 with BMI between 18.5 and 26.5 kg/m(2) ), and noneating disorder controls (n = 35) completed SCID-I interviews and questionnaires.
