The effect of current on chemicals production in annular double-chamber microbial electrosynthesis reactor with ethanol as electron donor.

The efficient production of C4 compounds (e.g., butyrate) from CO2 in microbial electrosynthesis (MES) systems faces persistent challenges. This study employed an annular double-chamber MES reactor with ethanol as electron donor to systematically investigate chemicals generation under three controlled currents (50 mA, 100 mA, and 150 mA). The results showed MES with 50 mA can produce the highest butyrate concentrations of 8.7 g/L with average yield of 0.62 g/L/d, and its electron recovery efficiency reached a maximum of 94.4%. In contrast, acetate became the primary product in MES at 100 mA an

Simultaneous enhancement of power generation and phosphorus removal in microbial fuel cell using Iron-Carbon composite anode.

To simultaneously enhance electricity generation and phosphorus removal in microbial fuel cells (MFCs), iron-carbon composite anodes were developed using high-purity iron sheets and Fe2O3 particles. The results indicated that the Fe/Fe2O3 ratio was the key determinant of MFC performance, with the 2:1 anode achieving the highest phosphorus removal efficiency and superior electricity generation, representing increases of 46.95% and 24.29% compared with the control, respectively. Fe2O3 promoted the enrichment of iron-reducing bacteria, thereby alleviating the passivation of iron sheets and mitiga

Impregnation of granular activated carbon with nickel or copper improves performance of microbial electrosynthesis.

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) utilizes renewable electricity to power microbial conversion of carbon dioxide into multi-carbon products. As the cathode electrodes serve both as source of reducing equivalents and provide surface area for biofilm growth, the electrode material plays a crucial role in MES. In this study, granular activated carbon (GAC) was impregnated with copper or nickel (5 wt%) and used as MES cathode. In abiotic runs, metal impregnated GAC resulted in higher current densities, on average up to 5.6 mA cm-3, compared to GAC without metal impregnation, up to 1.1 mA cm-3. In M

A pathway for promoting bioelectrochemical performance of microbial fuel cell by synthesizing graphite carbon nitride doped on single atom catalyst copper as cathode catalyst.

In this study, a simple distributed feeding method was used to dope graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) on single atom catalyst (SAC) copper (Cu) to form composite material (Cu-SA/CN). Cu-SA/CN was formed by mutual doping of polyhedral block Cu and irregular g-C3N4. There were obvious crystal face peaks at 28.4, 43.3, 47.3 and 56.2°. Large solid Cu and small irregular g-C3N4 were successfully combined and C, Cu, N and O elements were uniformly distributed on the surface of Cu-SA/CN. The valence bond of N-CN, C-NC, CC and OH was found. When the Cu content was 0.03 mol, Cu-SA/CN3 showed excel

Optimizing butyrate production from methanol and CO2 in microbial electrosynthesis.

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) enables the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable chemicals utilizing renewable electricity. Acetate is often the main product but supplying a soluble electron donor facilitates upgrading acetate to butyrate via chain elongation. Compared to ethanol as the electron donor, methanol is a promising alternative as its production avoids the competition with food production. However, the optimal operation conditions for maximizing butyrate production rates in methanol assisted MES have not yet been determined. In this study, methanol assisted chain elongat

Recent Advances in Microfluidic Biofuel Cells.

Traditionally, fuel cells operate by using small fuel molecules such as hydrogen and methanol to produce energy, water, and carbon dioxide. Enzyme biofuel cells use enzymes rather than precious metals as electrode catalysts. In recent years, enzyme-immobilized electrodes have been developed by combining enzyme biofuel cells with microfluidic technology to improve the efficiency and performance of fuel cells. In this review, we will provide an overview and describe the current status of recent enzyme biofuel cells, microfluidic technology, and their applications to microfluidic fuel cells.

The in-depth revelation of the mechanism by which a downflow Leersia hexandra Swartz constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell synchronously removes Cr(VI) and p-chlorophenol and generates electricity.

The composite pollution by Cr(VI) and p-chlorophenol (4-CP) has high toxicity and harms water safety. However, research on the effective removal of Cr(VI) and 4-CP composite-polluted wastewater (C&P) and efficient synchronous electricity generation with reclaimed resources is limited. In this study, a downflow Leersia hexandra constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (DLCW-MFC) was builded to treat C&P, as well as wastewater singularly polluted by Cr(VI) (SC) and 4-CP (SP), respectively, to reveal the mechanism by which DLCW-MFC treats C&P and synchronously generates electricity. Gaseous isopropanol removal in a microbial fuel cell with deoxidizing anode: Performance, anode characteristics and microbial community.

A deoxidizing packing material (DPM) with an encapsulated deoxidizing agent (DA) was developed to construct the packed anodes of a trickle-bed microbial fuel cell (TB-MFC) for treating waste gas. The encapsulated DA can consume O2 in waste gas and increase the voltage output and power density (PD) of the constructed TB-MFC. The DPM effectively enables the circulating water in TB-MFC for maintaining a low level of dissolved oxygen for 80 h. The results revealed that when the concentration of isopropanol (IPA) in waste gas was 0.74 g/m3, the TB-MFC (DPM with DA) exhibited an IPA removal efficien

The overlooked promotion of electricity generation by electrochemically active bacteria using chitosan.

The modification of electrodes with nanomaterials improves the adhesion of electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) and their generation of electricity. Although chitosan (CTS) is the most commonly used nanomaterial dispersant, its effects on EAB remain unclear. This study systematically investigates the effects of electrodeposited CTS on electricity production by EAB and elucidates the underlying biological mechanisms. The results demonstrate that EAB generates 14.19 times more electricity with a modified carbon cloth electrode containing electrodeposited CTS compared with an unmodified electr

Biogenic FeS Reshapes microbial interactions to regulate acetogenesis in CO2-Fed microbial electrosynthesis.

Inefficient electron transfer and poorly coordinated microbial communities often limit stable CO2-to-acetate conversion in microbial electrosynthesis (MES). Herein, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was introduced to induce in situ biogenic FeS formation at the cathode to regulate microbial interactions and enhance acetogenesis. Under the acetogenesis dominant condition (RAT: sludge to MR-1 ratio of 2:1, Fe/S = 5/10 mM, initial MR-1 inoculation), acetate production reached 1330.6 mg L-1 with the carbon recovery efficiency of 62.9%. Community and metagenomic analyses showed that FeS selectively enrich

Modular multi-cathode microbial electrosynthesis enabling predictable scale-out conversion of CO2 to acetate.

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) uses electrosynthetic microorganisms to convert CO2 into valuable intermediate chemicals, enabling sustainable carbon-negative CO2 capture and utilization (CCU). Nevertheless, the scaling up of MES reactors remains a challenge because increasing the electrode area and reactor volume often deteriorates the electrochemical and biological uniformity, leading to performance losses in a scaled-up system. This paper proposes a modular multi-cathode chamber MES configuration in which multiple cathodes in separated chambers share a single anode, allowing modular expans
