Anti-marine biofouling adhesion performance and mechanism of PDMS fouling-release coating containing PS-PEG hydrogel.

Polystyrene microspheres compounded with polyethylene glycol-based hydrogel (PS-PEG)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings were prepared using the physical blending method. The chemical structure, surface and interface properties, interlayer adhesion, and tensile properties were tested in this paper. Furthermore, the antifouling performance was evaluated through bovine serum albumin fluorescent protein adsorption testing, marine bacteria adhesion testing, and benthic diatom adhesion testing. The results showed that the coating performance was best when 20 wt% PS-PEG hydrogel was added. Its surf

Natural polyketide 6-pentyl-2H-pyrone-2-one and its synthetic analogues efficiently prevent marine biofouling.

Biofouling is a widespread phenomenon in oceans worldwide. With increasing human development and activities in open and coastal waters, and due to the environmental impact of AF organotins and copper-based paint, the demand for nontoxic antifouling (AF) paints is increasing. Various bioassays for antimicrobial activity, anti-biofilm formation and anti-barnacle settlement were established to evaluate the possibility of using marine natural products as AF agents. A series of natural products, isolated from the marine-derived fungi Trichoderma atroviride and T. reesei, were evaluated for their AF

Biofouling and pollutant removal during long-term operation of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor treating municipal wastewater.

Two different sludge retention times (SRTs) were tested in order to assess the impact on membrane fouling and effluent quality in an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). Two up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors (1 l volume) coupled to external tubular ultrafiltration membranes (filtration area = 81 cm(2)) were operated at a hydraulic retention time of 3 h and two different SRTs (100 and 60 days). The transmembrane pressure (TMP), flux (J) and relevant parameters to assess water quality were measured. Effluents from UASB reactors were filtered for 500 h without intermediate cleaning.

Mitigation of biofouling in membrane bioreactors by quorum-quenching bacteria during the treatment of metal-containing wastewater.

Quorum quenching (QQ) is an efficient way to mitigate membrane biofouling in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) during wastewater treatment. A QQ bacterium, Lysinibacillus sp. A4, was isolated and used to mitigate biofouling in an MBR during the treatment of wastewater containing metals. A QQ enzyme (named AilY) was cloned from A4 and identified as a metallo-β-lactamase-like lactonase. The QQ activity of A4 and that of Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) overexpressing AilY could be promoted by Fe2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+ while remaining unaffected by other metals tested. The two bacteria effectively mitigated biof

Slippery lubricant-infused surfaces with anti-fouling and antimicrobial properties for preventing biofouling in biomedical applications.

With the annual surge in hospital admissions, the demand for medical treatment, whether invasive or non-invasive, remains constant. While the non-invasive treatments have less severe risks associated with them as opposed to invasive treatments, bacterial infections and improperly implanted device function, such as infection or occlusion of intravenous catheters, are shared concerns among the treatments. Therefore, research has been conducted to modify medical-grade polymers to enable more effective antibacterial and anti-fouling activities. This includes physical modifications to the surface o

Development and testing of bio-based amphiphilic-designed polymer coatings as a safer approach to marine biofouling.

Marine biofouling is a major environmental and economic challenge for shipping and marine infrastructure, driving the need for effective and sustainable antifouling strategies. In this study, bio-based amphiphilic-designed polymer coatings were synthesized from renewable platform chemicals via an energy-efficient free-radical polymerization approach, thereby avoiding hazardous solvents. The coatings were designed by tuning the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance to modulate antifouling performance, with crosslinking introduced in selected formulations to improve coating integrity and durability. High-Performance Nanofiltration Membrane with Dual Resistance to Gypsum Scaling and Biofouling for Enhanced Water Purification.

Nanofiltration (NF) technology is pivotal for ensuring a sustainable and reliable supply of clean water. To address the critical need for advanced thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes with exceptional permselectivity and fouling resistance for emerging contaminant purification, we introduce a novel high-performance NF membrane. This membrane features a selective polypiperazine (PIP) layer functionalized with amino-containing quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) through an in situ interfacial polycondensation reaction. Our investigation demonstrated that precise QAC functionalizat

When two evils are not equal: Differential biofouling of unionid bivalves by two invasive dreissenid species.

Byssate bivalves are ecosystem engineers with world-wide impact on aquatic communities through habitat forming and biofouling of hard-shelled organisms. In fresh waters, they are represented by invasive Ponto-Caspian dreissenid mussels spreading throughout Europe and North America. They negatively affect globally threatened unionid mussels by fouling, which deteriorates their condition and survival. The appearance of quagga mussels (D. rostriformis bugensis, QM) in areas occupied by zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha, ZM) usually has led to the replacement of ZM by QM. We combined long-term f

Effect of quorum quenching on biofouling control and microbial community in membrane bioreactors by Brucella sp. ZJ1.

Quorum quenching (QQ) has been demonstrated to be a novel technique for controlling biofouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs), as it can significantly inhibit biofilm formation by disrupting quorum sensing (QS). The exploration of new QQ bacterial strains and the evaluation of their performance in mitigating membrane fouling in MBR systems is significant. In this study, an efficient QQ strain, Brucella sp. ZJ1 was encapsulated in alginate beads and evaluated for its ability to mitigate biofouling. The findings revealed that MBR with QQ beads extended the operation time by 2-3 times without aff

Biofouling growth in cold estuarine waters and evaluation of some chitosan and copper anti-fouling paints.

Ecological concerns about antifouling paints containing non-green tin and copper compounds have highlighted the need for environmentally friendly alternatives. We report here a field test conducted in estuarine waters over two months designed to evaluate the efficiency of a number of active natural and man-made chemical ingredients added into a silicon-polyurethane marine paint. Early steps of biofouling in cold seawater of the St. Lawrence Estuary (Canada) were observed. Analyses, including dry biomass, flow cytometry and spectrofluorimetry, demonstrated a short-term antibacterial action of c

Drug delivery with fewer fouls: localized antibiotic release and reduced surface biofouling with glutathione-conjugated hydrogels.

Systemic antibiotics are the standard of care for acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI), but low drug perfusion at the site of infection and higher rates of antibiotic resistance necessitate alternative strategies to enhance local antibiotic concentrations. Wound dressings provide a convenient approach to antibiotic delivery but are limited by fixed, pre-loaded antibiotic concentrations. We have recently demonstrated the use of glutathione-conjugated poly(ethylene glycol) [GSH-PEG] hydrogels for the loading and release of charge-bearing therapeutic molecules. Herein, we e

High-stable bimetallic AgCu nanoalloys with core-shell structures for sustainable antibacterial and biofouling mitigation in nanofiltration.

Nanofiltration (NF) is crucial for advancing water purification and wastewater reuse technologies. Incorporating biocidal nanoparticles (NPs) such as AgNPs and CuNPs is promising for developing antibacterial and antibiofouling NF membranes, while their application is limited by NPs aggregation, high cost, and severe ion release. In this study, we developed novel NF membranes by integrating bimetallic AgCu nanoalloys via an in-situ reduction and coordination method facilitated by a polydopamine/polyethyleneimine (PDA/PEI) intermediate layer. The sequential deposition of Cu2+ onto nascent AgNPs

A green, versatile, and facile strategy for anti-biofouling surface with ultra-high graft density polyethylene glycol.

Implantable catheters are susceptible to severe complications due to non-specific protein adhesion on their surfaces. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) coatings, the gold standard for resistance to non-specific protein adhesion, present a challenge in achieving high-density grafting, which significantly restricts their use as anti-biofouling coatings. Herein, we exploited the strong interaction between polyphenols (PCs) and polycations (K6-PEG) to graft PEG onto the surface of PC-Cu (A network of metal polyphenols composed of proanthocyanidins and metal copper ions, with expectation for the coating wi

Anti-biofouling membrane coated with polyvinyl alcohol/sodium carboxymethylcellulose/tannic acid hydrogel for efficient dye/salt separation.

Biofouling is the most severe challenge for separation membranes. In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)/tannic acid (TA) hydrogel coating exhibited a comprehensive anti-biofouling property and high efficient for dye/salt separation. For the hydrogel layer, ethanol inhibited the cross-linking of the hydrogen bond between the PVA, CMC and TA, forming a uniform "hydrogel paint" applied to the membrane surface using the coating method. Subsequently, the hydrogen bond was re-established by

Gravity-driven membrane coupled with oxidation technology to modify the surface properties and biofilm formation: Biofouling mitigation.

Biofilms caused by biological fouling play an essential role in gravity-driven membranes' (GDMs) flux decline and rejection rate. The effects of ozone, permanganate, and ferrate (VI) in-situ pretreatment on membrane properties and biofilm formation were systematically studied. Due to the selective retention and adsorption of algal organic matter by biofilms and oxidative degradation, the rejection efficiency of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in algae-laden water pretreated with permanganate by GDM was up to 23.63%. Pre-oxidation extraordinarily postponed flux decline and biofilm formation of G

Visible-light-responsive Fe2O3-TiO2-carbon dot nanocomposite coatings for enhanced biofouling mitigation in aquaculture cage nets.

A photocatalytic antifouling coating was designed for aquaculture cage nets, as biofouling is a persistent challenge in aquaculture that substantially reduces operational efficiency and compromises the economic performance of the systems. A nanostructured composite was developed using nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2), iron(iii) oxide (Fe2O3), and carbon dots (CDs). The antifouling efficacy of the composite was evaluated by applying it onto a (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (silane)-pretreated polyethylene substrate, followed by immersion in natural estuarine waters. This ternary photocatalyt

Application of novel quorum quenching bacteria to mitigate biofouling in antibiotic-stressed membrane bioreactors: Performances and mechanisms.

Quorum quenching (QQ)-based strategies are efficient for biofouling control. However, the feasibility of using QQ bacteria in antibiotic-stressed membrane bioreactors (MBRs) remains unknown. In this study, we isolated three novel QQ strains (Bacillus sp. QX01 and QX03, Delftia sp. QX14) from the activated sludge of an actual MBR. They can degrade 11 N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) with high efficiencies and rates through intracellular QQ pathways involving putative acylases and lactonases. Running two lab-scale MBRs, we found that introducing antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, azithromycin, and

Innovative temperature-responsive membrane with an elastic interface for biofouling mitigation in industrial circulating cooling water treatment.

To address the issues of scaling caused by heat and water evaporation in regard to circulating cooling water (CCW), TFC membrane filtration systems have been increasingly considered for terminal treatment processes because of their excellent separation performance. However, membrane biofouling phenomenon significantly hinders the widespread utilization of TFC membranes. In this study, to harness the thermal phenomenon of CCW and establish a stable and durable multifunctional antibiofouling layer, temperature-responsive Pnipam and the spectral antibacterial agent Ag were organically incorporate

Morphology regulation and application of nano cobalt oxide (Co3O4) electrocatalysts for chlorine evolution toward marine anti-biofouling.

For the optical equipment used in the marine environment, the quality and accuracy of the tests are easily affected by biological fouling. Hence, good anti-fouling performance is crucial for preserving the optical equipment. A new electrochemical chlorination anti-fouling system has been proposed for years and is suitable for underwater optical windows. In this paper, nano Co3O4 electrocatalysts with different morphologies were prepared through the hydrothermal method to study the structure-activity relationship between their electrochemical properties and morphologies. The nanourchin Co3O4 sh
