Association of a Skin Dressing Made With the Organic Part of Marine Sponges and Photobiomodulation on the Wound Healing in an Animal Model.

The present study aims to characterize and to evaluate the biological effects of a skin dressing manufactured with the organic part of the Chondrilla caribensis marine sponge (called spongin-like collagen (SC)) associated or not to photobiomodulation (PBM) on the skin wound healing of rats. Skin dressings were manufactured with SC and it was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a tensile assay. In order to evaluate its biological effects, an experimental model of cutaneous wounds was surgically performed. Eighteen rats were randomly distributed into three experimental gro

Honey dressing on a leg ulcer with tendon exposure in a patient with type 2 diabetes.

Honey has been used as a wound dressing for hundreds of years by ancient civilizations, but only recently it has acquired scientific interest because of its relevant biological properties. In the last decade, indeed, several trials and observational studies have reported that, compared to conventional treatment (e.g. antiseptics, polyurethane film, paraffin gauze, soframycin-impregnated gauze), honey dressings seem to be better in healing time of different types of wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers. However, to date, information about a potential favorable biological effect of honey dress

Evidence for Healing Diabetic Foot Ulcers With Biologic Skin Substitutes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Development of diabetic foot ulcers is a common complication of diabetes. Standard-of-care (SOC) therapy alone is often not sufficient to heal these wounds, resulting in application of adjuvant wound therapies including biologic skin substitutes. Although a variety of products exist, it has been difficult to formulate conclusions on their clinical efficacy. We therefore performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy of healing diabetic foot ulcers with biologic skin substitutes. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Report

Biobrane in the management of critical microsurgical wounds of the upper extremity.

PURPOSE: Evolving soft tissue necrosis and/or edema can complicate microsurgical reconstruction by leading to open wounds with exposure of critical structures: anastamosed vessels, nerves, and tendons. Not infrequently, primary closure of these wounds is not possible. Immediate skin grafting may lead to anatomical and/or functional failure of reconstructed structures, compromising immediate or long-term functional outcomes. In addition, local tissues are often unavailable, and free tissue transfer in those settings could be ill-advised, especially for small wounds. METHODS: All of the senior

Histological evaluation of surgically treated oral tissues after application of a photocuring periodontal dressing material. An animal study.

At present no information is available about biological effects on oral tissues of the photocuring periodontal dressing Barricaid. This animal study examines histologically the tissue responses of surgical areas covered during 7 days with either Barricaid, the eugenol-containing dressing Ward's Wondrpak or the bionert control gel Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose. One group was studied immediately after the removal of the dressings; in the other group, further healing was permitted for another week. Results after 7 days indicate acute inflammatory reactions in the test areas without significant differ

Fabricating a Cu-MBG-incorporated polyurethane foam with antibacterial properties and bioactivity for diabetic wound healing.

Chronic diabetic wounds require dressings that combine high liquid absorption, antibacterial activity, and bioactivity to support tissue repair. Here, copper-containing mesoporous bioactive glass (Cu-MBG) was incorporated into polyurethane foam to create a bioactive composite dressing (PU-Cu-MBG). The resulting foam exhibited strong liquid absorption, suitable water vapor transmission, and robust mechanical properties. The Cu-MBG endowed the dressing with antibacterial activity (>99% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and promoted the proliferation of human endothelial cells.

[Reconstruction of the conjunctival and corneal surface. Transplantation of amnionic membrane].

The ocular surface epithelia with the tear film as a unit provide clear vision and comfort and serve as the first line the defense. It is important to understand how ocular surface health is maintained and how ocular surface failure occurs. Furthermore, it is timely to summarize new information concerning action mechanisms and clinical uses of amniotic membrane transplantation for ocular surface reconstruction. When appropriately processed and preserved, amniotic membrane as a native matrix can be used as a graft to restore conjunctival surfaces following removal of lesions such as pterygium,

Clinical trials of amniotic membranes in burn wound care.

Four test conditions of increasing complexity were used to evaluate the clinical efficacy of amniotic membranes as biologic dressings on donor sites and burn wounds in children. These were the clean-skin donor-site wound, the uncontaminated shallow partial-thickness burn wound, the bed of freshly excised full-thickness wounds, and the granulating surface of colonized burn wounds. The rate of epithelialization under amniotic membranes was the same as that under 5% scarlet red ointment or 0.5% silver nitrate solution dressings. Preservation of a healthy excised wound bed and maintenance of a low

Transformation of Natural Resin Resina Draconis to 3D Functionalized Fibrous Scaffolds for Efficient Chronic Wound Healing.

Chronic wound healing is a major challenge in clinical practice. Secondary dressing damage and antibiotic resistance are the main obstacles for traditional wound dressings. Resina draconis (RD), a natural resin traditionally used in powder form for wound care, is now considered unsuitable due to the lack of gas permeability and moist environment required for wound healing. Here, RD is incorporated in situ by constructing a 3D coiled fibrous scaffold with polycaprolactone/polyethylene oxide. Due to the high porosity of 3D scaffold, the RD-3D dressings have a favorable swelling capacity, providi

The systemic treatments for drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) beyond corticosteroids.

Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), also known as drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DiHS), is a severe type of cutaneous adverse reaction. The gold standard therapy for DRESS involves the discontinuation of the culprit drug, supportive therapies, and administration of corticosteroids. However, in cases of primary treatment failure or suboptimal response, there arises an urgent need for alternative interventions. This review focuses on exploring alternative systemic therapies for patients with steroid-resistant DRESS, steroid-dependent DRESS, or refractory DRESS

Polysaccharide-Based Hydrogels for Wound Dressing: Design Considerations and Clinical Applications.

Wound management remains a worldwide challenge. It is undeniable that patients with problems such as difficulties in wound healing, metabolic disorder of the wound microenvironment and even severely infected wounds etc. always suffer great pain that affected their quality of lives. The selection of appropriate wound dressings is vital for the healing process. With the advances of technology, hydrogels dressings have been showing great potentials for the treatment of both acute wounds (e.g., burn injuries, hemorrhage, rupturing of internal organs/aorta) and chronic wounds such as diabetic foot

Development and evaluation of silver-impregnated amniotic membrane as an antimicrobial burn dressing.

Silver has been widely used as an antimicrobial agent in burn wound care. A number of dressings containing silver have been developed using textiles, polyurethane films, foams, hydrogels, and hydrocolloids. However, biological-derived wound dressings have been advocated for their ability to more effectively promote healing and regulation of evaporation and exudation at the wound site. An antimicrobial burn dressing was developed by impregnation of silver on the amniotic membrane. The dressing was assessed for antimicrobial effectiveness and physical properties of relevance to clinical performa

Novel targeted inhibition of the IL-5 axis for drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome represents a severe hypersensitivity reaction. Up-to-date treatment is based on withdrawal of medication, supportive care, and immunosuppression using high-dose corticosteroid (CS) therapy. However, evidence-based data are lacking regarding second-line therapy for steroid-resistant or steroid-dependent patients. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesize that the interleukin (IL)-5 axis plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of DRESS; hence, inhibition of this signaling pathway could offer a potential therapy for ste

Electrospun PCL/PVA/PHMB nanofibers incorporating Ziziphus jujuba fruit extract as promising wound dressings with potent antibacterial and antidiabetic properties.

This investigation examined the potential antibacterial and antidiabetic effects of wound dressings created using electrospun nanofibers containing Ziziphus jujuba fruit extract (ZJ). These nanofibers were composed of a combination of Polycaprolactone (PCL), Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA), and Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB). The process of creating these nanofibers involved electrospinning. The nanofiber products, which included PCL, PCL/PVA, PCL/PVA/ZJ, PCL/PVA/PHMB, and PCL/PVA/PHMB/ZJ, underwent a morphology, physicochemical, and biological assessment. Incorporating PHMB into the nanofibers en
