OBJECTIVE: To present an overview on current progress and future directions in psychiatric genetics.
METHODS: The review of studies that have demonstrated a genetic contribution to a wide range of psychopathology using family, twin, adoption studies and exploration of the methods and limitations of molecular genetic studies.
RESULTS: Single gene disorders has been the area that is most straightforward with striking advances in disorders such as Huntington Disease and early onset familial Alzheimer disease. Complex phenotypes such as schizophrenia and affective disorder have presented greater

Psychiatry is a distinct medical specialty that integrates biological, psychological, and social sciences to diagnose, treat, and prevent psychiatric disorders. Despite major advances in neuroscience, pharmacological treatments, psychotherapy, and service delivery, psychiatry often remains insufficiently recognized within the broader mental health discourse. Public awareness efforts have largely focused on mental health in general, while psychiatry as a medical discipline has received comparatively limited visibility. This has contributed to ambiguity regarding its identity and role within mod

"Critical psychiatry" encompasses a diverse spectrum of critiques challenging foundational assumptions and practices within psychiatry, emphasizing the role of power, relational dynamics, and sociocultural contexts in understanding psychological distress and disability. We provide an overview of these topics relevant to medical ethics. Major themes explored here include critiques of biological reductionism, psychiatric classification and diagnosis, overmedicalization, models of psychopharmacology, iatrogenic harm, institutional corruption, and epistemic injustice. The article advocates for a c

This article explores how scientists positioned brain research in postwar Germany. Detlev Ploog imported technology-brain stimulation with implanted electrodes-to help reclaim the Max-Planck-Institute for Psychiatry's international stature, providing a neurophysiological basis for biological psychiatry and making biological research foundational for philosophical anthropology. Bernhard Hassenstein and Werner Reichardt, by contrast, kept such philosophical prospects at bay. They did not engage the rhetoric of information typical for the propagation of cybernetics as universal science. Instead,

Knowledge about the spectrum of autistic disorders, including Asperger's syndrome, has grown significantly. Diagnoses can be made more reliably and there is better characterization of elements within the spectrum than ever before. A clearer picture of the cognitive limitations displayed by persons with conditions in the autistic spectrum is emerging. Deficits in manipulating abstract meanings, translating principles across contexts, and attending to contextual meanings can be seen in lower and higher functioning individuals. Links between "executive function," "theory of mind," and findings fr

The "mind-body" dualism has shaped the development of psychiatry. At the very beginning psychiatry was related to the mind and the rest of the medicine to the body. The main reasons for such division were lack of biological evidence for psychiatric disorders and wrong beliefs about demonic origins of "lunacy". But although the development of science offered more than enough biological evidence to understand brain as an organ of origin for psychiatric disorders, the dualism of mind and body remained alive even in the modern classification systems. One of the consequences was another dualism tha

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common disorder in general and clinical populations and is related to potentially severe medical and socio-professional consequences. Treatment of BPD is based on evidence-based psychotherapies (such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Mentalization-Based Therapy, Schema-Focused Therapy or Transference Focused Psychotherapy), which have been shown effective but are poorly available in France. Pharmacological treatments, which are more easily available, are not effective in treating symptoms of the disorder but can be useful in management of comorbiditi

Precision Medicine in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: The Potential, Limitations, and Prospects for Diagnosis and TreatmentAbstract: Precision medicine has transformed several areas of pediatrics, whereas diagnostic assessment and treatment in child and adolescent psychiatry continue to rely predominantly on syndrome-based classification systems. This narrative review examines the opportunities and limitations of applying precision psychiatry in children and adolescents. We summarize key conceptual frameworks, including the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC), the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychop

The biopsychosocial approach is a model of eclecticism, which consists of multidisciplinary academic fields, reacting against the "neuroscientification" of psychiatry. The biopsychosocial approach was proposed by George Engel following Adolf Meyer's psychobiological and Roy R. Ginker's eclectic approach to psychiatry. Although the use of the biopsychosocial approach is increasing, it has several limitations: First, specific practices cannot be guided by the biopsychosocial approach because it is considered to be "boundless psychiatry." Second, unlike an initial intention, the symptomatic use o

Progress in psychiatry in the West has been retarded by the proclivity of the discipline to swing violently between 2 approaches to viewing mental illness; that is, emphasizing-to the exclusion of the other-the material-somatic vs the psychical-experiential avenues to knowledge. Each time a shift occurs, the leaders of the new dominant approach emotionally denounce the principles and ideas that came before. We can examine this phenomenon historically by looking at Romantic psychiatry, mid-/late-19th century empirical psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and modern biological psychiatry. Looking at the

Precision psychiatry is an emerging framework that seeks to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment in mental disorders through the integration of biological, behavioral, environmental, and clinical information. Current diagnostic systems show substantial heterogeneity within categories and symptom overlap across disorders, reflecting limited biological validity and constraining treatment development. This review presents a conceptual framework for precision psychiatry that emphasizes multimodal approaches. We describe key sources of information, including demographic and psychosocial fact

This article uses Anne Sexton's therapy by Martin T. Orne as a frame for investigating and contextualising the unusual therapeutic rationale that lay behind her treatment. The rationale had three sources: the results of Orne's experimental psychological research, particularly the 'demand characteristics of social psychology experiments'; the functional sociology of Robert Merton and Talcott Parsons; and the influence of Jerome D. Frank's concept of 'effective hope'. Unpacking this story builds on the work of a number of historians who have destabilised one of the major binaries that has shaped

Precision psychiatry is an approach designed to improve diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders by leveraging biological insights and developing innovative, mechanism-based treatment strategies unconstrained by current diagnostic boundaries. At its core, precision psychiatry aims to pinpoint the underlying neurobiological mechanisms responsible for the emergence and persistence of symptoms of mental health conditions. This approach strives to create diagnostic tools and therapies targeting these mechanisms, potentially addressing previously resistant aspects of mental health conditions by

It has become common to say psychiatric illnesses are brain diseases. This reflects a conception of the mental as being biologically based, though it is also thought that thinking of psychiatric illness this way will reduce the stigma attached to psychiatric illness. If psychiatric illnesses are brain diseases, however, it is not clear why psychiatry should not collapse into neurology, and some argue for this course. Others try to maintain a distinction by saying that neurology deals with abnormalities of neural structure while psychiatry deals with specific abnormalities of neural functioning

We describe here the case of a 54-year-old bipolar woman, followed in psychiatry and treated with lithium and a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (escitalopram) and lamotrigine, presenting a lithium poisoning with an altered state of consciousness caused by a supposed mismanagement of her treatment. Lithium poisoning was suggested based on neurological clinical features, but the blood test brought out a lithium concentration within the therapeutic values at 1,2 mmol/L (N: 0,6-1,2 mmol/L). The classic biological complications related to lithium poisoning (hypercalcemia, diabetes insipidus)

The contributions made by various stages of psychopharmacology - i.e. pharmacotherapy of psychoses as well as experimental psychiatry - towards the understanding of the structure and nature of major psychoses are considered. The various types of antipsychotic agents (neuroleptics, antidepressants and lithium) are reviewed as well as their characteristics, classification and biochemical properties. Besides, pharmacopsychoses resulting from heavy and repeated abuse of hallucinatory and other drugs are put forward as a model worthy of further studies. This paper concludes by an appeal for a truly

Although diagnosis is a central issue in medical care, in psychiatry its value is still controversial. The function of diagnosis is to indicate treatments and to help clinicians take better care of patients. The fundamental role of diagnosis is to predict outcome and prognosis. To date serious concern persists regarding the clinical utility and predictive validity of the diagnosis system in psychiatry, which is at the most syndromal. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, which nosologists consider two distinct disorders, are the most discussed psychiatric illnesses. Recent findings in different

The article has as its object to analyze, on the basis of materials of various textbooks, articles, reports and dissertations of the Soviet period, a number of problematic topics discussed in National theory of psychiatry. And on the basis of implemented analysis to point out inherent antinomianism of methodological approaches, key concepts and therapeutic practices. The article systematically analyses a number of antinomic oppositions such as biological and social, the norm and the pathology, the health and the illness, the physician and the patient. Within these framework, on the one hand, i

As psychedelic compounds gain traction in psychiatry, there is a need to consider the active mechanism to explain the effect observed in randomized clinical trials. Traditionally, biological psychiatry has asked how compounds affect the causal pathways of illness to reduce symptoms and therefore focus on analysis of the pharmacologic properties. In psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP), there is debate about whether ingestion of the psychedelic alone is thought to be responsible for the clinical outcome. A question arises how the medication and psychotherapeutic intervention together might
