A high-efficiency palmprint recognition model integrating ROI and Gabor filtering.

Palmprint recognition, as a biometric recognition technology, has unique individual recognition and high accuracy, and is broadly utilized in fields such as identity verification and security monitoring. Therefore, a palm print recognition model that integrates regions of interest and Gabor filters has been proposed to solve the problem of difficulty in feature extraction caused by factors such as noise, lighting changes, and acquisition angles that often affect palm print images during the acquisition process. This model extracts standardized feature regions of palmprint images through the re

TJU-DHD: A Diverse High-Resolution Dataset for Object Detection.

Vehicles, pedestrians, and riders are the most important and interesting objects for the perception modules of self-driving vehicles and video surveillance. However, the state-of-the-art performance of detecting such important objects (esp. small objects) is far from satisfying the demand of practical systems. Large-scale, rich-diversity, and high-resolution datasets play an important role in developing better object detection methods to satisfy the demand. Existing public large-scale datasets such as MS COCO collected from websites do not focus on the specific scenarios. Moreover, the popular

Complete Region of Interest for Unconstrained Palmprint Recognition.

Unconstrained palmprint images have shown great potential for recognition applications due to their lower restrictions regarding hand poses and backgrounds during contactless image acquisition. However, they face two challenges: 1) unclear palm contours and finger-valley points of unconstrained palmprint images make it difficult to locate landmarks to crop the palmprint region of interest (ROI); and 2) large intra-class diversities of unconstrained palmprint images hinder the learning of intra-class-invariant palmprint features. In this paper, we propose to directly extract the complete palmpr

The conclusive role of postmortem computed tomography (CT) of the skull and computer-assisted superimposition in identification of an unknown body.

Computed tomography is commonly used in modern medicine, and thus, it is often helpful for medicolegal purposes, especially as part of the antemortem record. The application of postmortem computed tomography and 3D reconstruction of the skull in challenging cases is reported, and its valuable contribution to positive identification is discussed. This paper presents a case in which the body of an unknown individual is identified. Positive identification had not been possible despite a multidisciplinary examination. The postmortem use of computerized tomography and 3D reconstruction of the skull

Strategic Eye Movements are Used to Support Object Authentication.

Authentication is an important cognitive process used to determine whether one's initial identification of an object is corroborated by additional sensory information. Although authentication is critical for safe interaction with many objects, including food, websites, and valuable documents, the visual orienting strategies used to garner additional sensory data to support authentication remain poorly understood. When reliable visual cues to counterfeit cannot be anticipated, distributing fixations widely across an object's surface might be useful. However, strategic fixation of specific objec

Eyes don't lie: Unmasking fake faces with ocular clues.

The rapid evolution of generative models necessitates robust methods to distinguish synthesized faces from real ones. This work evaluates a set of ocular geometry features for detecting synthesized faces generated by both GAN-based models (StyleGAN2/3) and text-to-image diffusion models (SFHQ-T2I), under controlled (Chicago Face Database, CFD) and uncontrolled (FFHQ, CelebA-HQ) acquisition conditions. Facial landmarks were extracted using MediaPipe Face Mesh, followed by XGBoost-based classification in both pairwise and pooled settings, covering 3128 real and 3470 synthesized images. The resul

Perspectives on and Utility of DNA Data and Facial Recognition Technologies to Aid Postdisaster Family Reunifications.

Following a disaster, each passing hour and day of family separation erodes children's health and wellbeing. Hospital networks must prioritize expeditious reunifications while safeguarding children, yet despite advances in biometric technologies and data protection, healthcare systems and disaster response organizations are unprepared to integrate biometric tools into postdisaster family reunification strategies. Biometric data (eg, fingerprints, facial images, dental records, DNA data) are deployed routinely for postmortem disaster victim identifications; however, deployment for family reunif

Empowering healthcare: Secure hand gesture authentication in medical IoT with sEMG.

Enhancing information security via reliable user authentication in wireless body area network (WBAN)-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications has garnered increasing attention. Traditional biometric methods, like fingerprint recognition, carry significant privacy risks because they cannot be cancelled or changed. Once a biometric template is exposed, it cannot be replaced, leading to potential privacy violations. Addressing these challenges, this study proposes a novel Secure EMG Framework, a cancellable biometric modality using surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals encoded by hand gesture

Characteristics of fatal road crashes involving unlicensed drivers or riders: Implications for countermeasures.

Drivers or riders without a valid license are involved in 10% of fatal road crashes in Norway. This was shown by an analysis of data from all fatal crashes in the period 2005-2014. A literature review shows that unlicensed drivers have a considerably increased crash risk. Such crashes could be prevented by electronic driver authentication, i.e., a technical system for checking that a driver or rider has legal access to a vehicle before driving is permitted. This can be done by requiring the driver/rider to identify themselves with a national identity number and a unique code or biometric infor

Exploring Fingerprint Biometric Devices as a Source of Multidrug Resistant Bacterial Isolates in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Biometric fingerprint systems, although effective for identification and security, can facilitate the spread of infections in hospital settings due to repeated contact by multiple users. Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are increasingly associated with bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter spp., Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas species, which are capable of surviving on inanimate surfaces, including fingerprint scanners. This study was conducted to determine whether biometric fingerprint devices can act as reservoirs for pathogenic microorganisms and to detect t

Use of craniofacial superimposition in historic investigation.

A skeleton discovered in Grand Forks, North Dakota was purported to belong to Clelland "Clell" Miller, a James-Younger gang member, who was killed during the Northfield Bank robbery on September 7, 1876. A 3-D image from a computer tomography (CT) scan of the skull was obtained, and a craniofacial superimposition was conducted to determine if the skull could belong to Miller. The superimposition method used in this case was to overlay the CT image of the skull onto Miller's postmortem photograph. In addition to the craniofacial superimposition, the images were juxtaposed to compare similaritie
