Total deposition of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) particles was measured in a group of 15 nonsmokers who inhaled ETS of count median diameter of 0.2 microm and geometric standard deviation of 1.6. A total deposition of 56.0 +/- 15.9% was observed for nasal breathing and 48.7 +/- 11.5% for oral breathing. The problems of sinus barotrauma in air travelers have received little attention in the literature of emergency medicine. Presented here is a report of severe (Grade III) frontal sinus barotrauma in an airline passenger. The pathophysiology and treatment of frontal sinus barotrauma are reviewed. Emergency physicians should strongly consider a diagnosis of sinus barotrauma in patients who present with symptoms of sinusitis and a history of recent flight.

For high values of the quantum number of the total angular momentum J (up to J = 20), quantum mechanical eigenstates (eigenvalues and eigenfunctions) are calculated by the method of Gatti et al. (J. Mol. Spectrosc. 181 (1997) 403) for the bending deformations of HCN and CNH. In particular, we have examined the l-type resonances in highly excited rovibrational states within the framework of a one-dimensional model, i.e. along the reaction pathway for the isomerization reaction HCN/CNH. The potential energy surface used is that of Bowman et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 99 (1993) 308).

The role of the membrane skeleton in determining the shape of the human red cell was probed by weakening it in situ with urea, a membrane-permeable perturbant of spectrin. Urea by itself did not alter the biconcave disk shape of the red cell; however, above threshold conditions (1.5 M, 37 degrees C, 10 min), it caused an 18% reduction in the membrane elastic shear modulus. Peak stresses acting in limb bones should increase with increasing size if the forces acting on the bones increase in direct proportion to the animal's body weight. This is a direct consequence of the scaling of limb bone geometry over a wide range in size in mammals. Hydrogen peroxide is an important oxidizing agent in biological systems. In dermatology, it is frequently used as topical antiseptic, it has a haemostatic function, it can cause skin blanching, and it can facilitate skin tanning.
