Fine-needle biopsy is used in the thyroid pathology especially for the differential diagnosis concerning malignant lesions. From a total of 59 cases of thyroiditis, in 12 was possible to proceed to fine-needle biopsy, in large goiters and nodules larger than 1 cm in diameter; in these cases were obtained smears, stained in May-Grünwald-Giemsa technique. The experience of the use of the TRC-Mammotest machine for stereotactic fine needle biopsy (SFNB) of the breast in Perth is presented. During the period 20 October 1988 to 10 January 1990, 404 SFNB were performed on 389 women with impalpable, mammographically detected lesions of the breast. Percutaneous needle aspiration biopsy of mediastinal lesions was done in 49 patients. A high diagnostic value was obtained from lung (80%) and thymoma (70%) in mediastinal metastasis. The diagnostic rate for mediastinal malignant lymphoma, benign mediastinal cysts, and teratoma was 66.7%, 50% and 50% respectively. Pathological diagnosis of neurogenic tumors showed a positive rate of 33.3%. The procedure therefore, should be used selectively.

Adrenal tuberculosis remains an important cause of Addison's disease. Acute tuberculosis adrenalitis may produce mass-like enlargement of the glands which requires differentiation from primary or secondary neoplastic disease. Using percutaneous fine-needle aspiration biopsy, the authors made the diagnosis of tuberculosis adrenalitis in two patients who presented with Addison's disease; and enlarged adrenal glands seen using computed tomography.

Percutaneous muscle biopsies were performed in 77 infants and children using the Bergstrom muscle biopsy needle and local anesthesia. Satisfactory specimens for histochemistry and electron microscopy were obtained in all but one case, and the procedure was well tolerated by all patients. No complications were observed. The percutaneous biopsy is a useful technique for the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders in children.

OBJECTIVE: To study the cytologic features and role of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) in the diagnosis of extramedullary leukemia.

One hundred two patients with nonpalpable breast masses that presented as mammographic densities with or without calcification were studied consecutively. Using the Stereotix stereotactic device, fine-needle aspirations were obtained with subsequent hook-wire placement followed by surgical excision.
