Performance of a membrane bioreactor in extreme concentrations of bisphenol A.

In this study, a submerged membrane bioreactor was used to study the effect of low and high bisphenol A (BPA) concentration on the sludge biological activity. The pilot was operated over 540 days with hydraulic retention time and solid retention time of 5.5 hours and 140 days, respectively. As a hydrophobic compound, BPA was highly adsorbed by activated sludge. In lower concentrations, the biodegradation rate remained low, since the BPA concentration in the sludge was lower than 0.5 mg/g TS; yet, at an influent concentration up to 15 mg/L, the biodegradation rate was increasing, resulting in 9

Treatment of toilet wastewater for reuse in a membrane bioreactor.

Toilet wastewater is treated and reused on site at Europe's highest membrane bioreactor (MBR), located in a cable car mountain station in the ski resort of Zermatt. Negative impacts on the sensitive mountain environment are minimised by reusing close to 100% of the treated wastewater for toilet flushing. Besides 100% nitrogen removal, 80% of phosphorus was also eliminated. This paper presents operational results, optimisations of sludge management, decoloration and long-term maintenance of biomass in the very low-loaded summer season. From a global view the experiences and results of the proje

Bioreactor Design and Engineering for Cultivated Meat Manufacturing.

Bioreactors encompass a wide spectrum of engineering concepts, yet for decades, industrial biotechnology has seen little fundamental innovation, with large-scale production mainly confined to stirred-tank and bubble-column reactors for microbial fermentations. In pharmaceutical biotechnology, various cultivation systems for eukaryotic cells are well established, including microcarrier processes, suspension in stirred vessels, and disposable bags or wave (rocking) bioreactors. However, these systems have typically been optimized to produce specific biomolecules, such as recombinant proteins, va

A chicken bioreactor for efficient production of functional cytokines.

BACKGROUND: The global market for protein drugs has the highest compound annual growth rate of any pharmaceutical class but their availability, especially outside of the US market, is compromised by the high cost of manufacture and validation compared to traditional chemical drugs. Improvements in transgenic technologies allow valuable proteins to be produced by genetically-modified animals; several therapeutic proteins from such animal bioreactors are already on the market after successful clinical trials and regulatory approval. Chickens have lagged behind mammals in bioreactor development,

Approaching chlorpyrifos bioelimination at bench scale bioreactor.

Chlorpyrifos (CP) is one of the most commonly applied insecticides for control of pests and insects. The inappropriate use of this kind of chemicals has caused heavy contamination of many terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems thus representing a great environmental and health risk. The main purpose of this work is to investigate novel microbial agents (Pseudomonas stutzeri and the previously obtained consortium LB2) with the ability to degrade CP from polluted effluents. This goal was achieved by operating at different lab scales (flask and bioreactor) and operation modes (batch and fed-batch). V

Enhanced biodegradation at the Landgraaf bioreactor test-cell.

From 2001 to 2011, a bioreactor demonstration was performed in a 25,000m(3) (8m deep, 3500m(2) surface) test-cell. In this bioreactor, biodegradation was enhanced by premixing and homogenizing of waste, recirculation of leachate and aeration. Anaerobic biodegradation was completed within four years and was followed by two years of aeration. Ultimately a residue was obtained that had lost approximately 95% of its biogas potential. Biodegradation resulted in a significantly reduced leaching potential for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and specific heavy metals. For other inorganic components, le

[Aerogenesis evolution of the anaerobic-semiaerobic bioreactor landfill].

A novel bioreactor landfill, the anaerobic-semiaerobic bioreactor landfill (AN-SABL), was devised by combining an anaerobic bioreactor landfill (ANBL) with a semi-aerobic aged refuse biofilter (SAARB). Meanwhile, relevant parameters such as gas production volume and rate, and gas constituents were investigated to provide a theoretical foundation for the collection, utilization and treatment of landfill gas. Results indicated that the gas production of the anaerobic units was inhibited in the AN-SABLs. The gas production rates in the ANBL2 unit and the ANBL3 unit were 49 L x kg(-1) and 39 L x k

Skin genetically engineered as a bioreactor or a 'metabolic sink'.

Genetically manipulated human keratinocytes can produce and secrete medically relevant proteins to the circulation. Genetically modified skin may also function as a 'metabolic sink' detoxifying the body of metabolites which accumulate in certain metabolic diseases. At the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Md., a clinical trial investigating the treatment of an ocular disease using the skin as a 'metabolic sink' for ornithine accumulating in gyrate atrophy patients is being prepared. The trial will involve the transplantation of a small patch of autologous keratinocytes, transduced

Comparison between a fixed bed hybrid membrane bioreactor and a conventional membrane bioreactor for municipal wastewater treatment: a pilot-scale study.

A hybrid membrane bioreactor (HMBR) was developed, by adding biofilm support media into a conventional membrane bioreactor (CMBR), and operated in parallel with a CMBR. Results showed that effluent quality was significantly better with the HMBR. The removal efficiencies of COD, BOD5, NH4(+)-N and TN with the HMBR were 84%, 98%, 97% and 75%, respectively, as compared to 80%, 96%, 93% and 38% with the CMBR. There were no differences in phosphorus removal. The membrane fouling rate in the HMBR was on average only 57% of that in the CMBR. The lower concentration of colloidal biopolymer clusters in

A critical review on different strategies to enhance mass transfer in methanotrophic bioreactors.

Methanotrophs are bacteria with the ability to directly utilize methane as substrate to produce different useful biomaterials (e.g., lipids, proteins, bioplastics, methanol). However, due to the solubility and mass transfer limitations of methane, the methanotroph biotechnology remains almost entirely in laboratory/research scale. To address this, studies in recent years have focused on increasing the methane volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa) through modifications of bioreactor design and operations. This review critically analyzed these advances, aiming to identify the most suitable

Effect of polypropylene microplastics on the performance of membrane bioreactors in wastewater treatment.

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) can effectively remove microplastics (MPs) because of their good rejection performance. However, the influence of MP concentration and particle size on the short-term and long-term operation efficiency of MBRs remains unclear. To address this issue, this study investigated the effects of short-term stress and long-term accumulation of polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) with different particle sizes on the operational efficiency of MBRs by running three MBR systems at four concentration stages. Variations in pollutant removal, biological activity, composition of ex

Micropropagation of Guarianthe skinneri (Bateman) Dressler & W. E. Higging in Temporary Immersion Bioreactors.

Guarianthe skinneri (Bateman) Dressler & W. E. Higgins is an orchid valued for its ornamental characteristics. However, it is an orchid classified as threatened with extinction due to the illegal extraction from its natural habitat. In addition, its propagation through seed germination is very low, as is the case with most members of the family Orchidaceae. Its asexual propagation through pseudobulb separation is slow and produces a few propagules. For this reason, in vitro propagation techniques are an alternative to increase the number of plants obtained and thus be able to recover this valu

Impact of hydraulic residence time on nitrate removal in pilot-scale woodchip bioreactors.

Nitrate (NO3-N) export from row crop agricultural systems with subsurface tile drainage continues to be a major water quality concern. Woodchip bioreactors are an effective edge-of-field practice designed to remove NO3-N from tile drainage. The NO3-N removal rate of woodchip bioreactors can be impacted by several factors, including hydraulic residence time (HRT). This study examined the impact of three HRTs, 2 h, 8 h, and 16 h, on NO3-N removal in a set of nine pilot-scale woodchip bioreactors in Central Iowa. NO3-N concentration reduction from the inlet to the outlet was significantly differe

Comparison of Nitrate and Perchlorate in Controlling Sulfidogenesis in Heavy Oil-Containing Bioreactors.

Control of microbial reduction of sulfate to sulfide in oil reservoirs (a process referred to as souring) with nitrate has been researched extensively. Nitrate is reduced to nitrite, which is a strong inhibitor of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Perchlorate has been proposed as an alternative souring control agent. It is reduced to chlorate (ClO3 -) and chlorite (ClO2 -), which is dismutated to chloride and O2. These can react with sulfide to form sulfur. Chlorite is also highly biocidal. Here we compared the effectiveness of perchlorate and nitrate in inhibiting SRB activity in medium contai

Progenitor cells as remote "bioreactors": neuroprotection via modulation of the systemic inflammatory response.

Acute central nervous system (CNS) injuries such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, autoimmune encephalomyelitis, and ischemic stroke are associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and health care costs worldwide. Preliminary research has shown potential neuroprotection associated with adult tissue derived stem/progenitor cell based therapies. While initial research indicated that engraftment and transdifferentiation into neural cells could explain the observed benefit, the exact mechanism remains controversial. A second hypothesis details localized stem/progenitor cell engr

New milliliter-scale stirred tank bioreactors for the cultivation of mycelium forming microorganisms.

A novel milliliter-scale stirred tank bioreactor was developed for the cultivation of mycelium forming microorganisms on a 10 milliliter-scale. A newly designed one-sided paddle impeller is driven magnetically and rotates freely on an axis in an unbaffled reaction vessel made of polystyrene. A rotating lamella is formed which spreads out along the reactor wall. Thus an enhanced surface-to-volume ratio of the liquid phase is generated where oxygen is introduced via surface aeration. Volumetric oxygen transfer coefficients (k(L)a) > 0.15 s(-1) were measured. The fast moving liquid lamella effici

Dedicated Observers for Sensors Fault Detection and Diagnosis in Real Time for Bioreactors.

Due to the increasing demand for greater safety and ease of scale bioprocessing, fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) is becoming an effective method to avoid breakdowns and disasters. Therefore, this work focuses on developing a dedicated observer-based fault diagnosis for nonlinear systems. To solve this, the FDD scheme is needed to make it perform satisfactorily even in a faulty situation. A case study on bioethanol production is proposed to illustrate and demonstrate the proposed techniques in real time. Single faults and different sensor faults are considered. The effectiveness of the prop

Computational fluid dynamics enables predictable scale-up of perfusion bioreactors for microvessel production.

Scaling up microvessel culture systems is essential for producing clinically relevant vascularized tissues, yet conventional microphysiological platforms offer limited insight into how to maintain flow conditions during scale-up. Here, we present a computational-experimental framework using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to guide the design and scaling of microvessel bioreactors. Interstitial flow (IF) distributions were predicted in two perfusion-based platforms-a permeable well-plate insert and a rhomboidal microfluidic chamber-across multiple scaling factors and hydrostatic pressures. Evaluating Antibiotic Resistance Gene Correlations with Antibiotic Exposure Conditions in Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) are an emerging technology with potential to improve energy efficiency and effluent reuse in mainstream wastewater treatment. However, their contribution to the proliferation of contaminants of emerging concern, such as antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of select influent antibiotics at varying concentrations on the presence and abundance of ARGs in an AnMBR system and its effluent. Quantification of targeted ARGs revealed distinct profiles in biomass and effluent, with gene
