Public concerns exist over whether land application of biosolids is a pathway of introducing large amounts of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) into terrestrial ecosystems. Ongoing research is investigating a variety of high organic matter (OM) and Al/Fe phases for use as amendments to reduce PFAS leaching from matrices including biosolids. Drinking water treatment residuals (DWTRs) have characteristics (e.g., high OM, oxalate-extractable Al (Alox), and/or oxalate-extractable Fe (FeOx) content) linked with PFAS retention and are widely available at low cost. We investigated sorp

The reuse of treated wastewater (TWW) and sewage sludge are considered as solutions to the limited water resource and sludge disposal issues, respectively. The associated environmental and human health risks need to be analyzed to assess whether they are safe solutions or not. This paper discusses issues that relate to the accumulation of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance (AR) determinants in agricultural lands and crops, following TWW irrigation and biosolid amendment. Exposure assessment and dose-response assessment are the two important aspects of risk assessment discussed in this paper

An analytical method was developed to quantitatively determine pharmaceuticals in biosolid (treated sewage sludge) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The collected biosolid samples were initially freeze dried, and grounded to obtain relatively homogenized powders. Pharmaceuticals were extracted using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) under the optimized conditions. The optimal operation parameters, including extraction solvent, temperature, pressure, extraction time and cycles, were identified to be acetonitrile/water mixture (v/v 7:3) as extraction solvent with 3 extraction cycles (

Naproxen (2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl) propionic acid) is widely used for the treatment of pain and swelling associated with arthritis, gout, and other inflammatory conditions. Naproxen has been detected in municipal sewage outflows and in surface waters and could reach agricultural land through the application of municipal biosolids or reclaimed water. The persistence characteristics of naproxen in three agricultural soils were investigated. In laboratory microcosms of moist soil incubated at 30 degrees C, [O-14CH3]naproxen was rapidly and thoroughly mineralized to 14CO2 with comparable kinetics

The use of biosolids derived from municipal wastewater treatment sewage solids in agriculture has raised concerns regarding the presence and potential accumulation of contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) in soils. This study investigated the influence of six consecutive years of applications of an alkaline treated biosolid (ATB) in an agricultural field on the concentrations of seven pharmaceutical compounds considered as CECs including, carbamazepine (CBZ), caffeine (CAF), dimethylxanthine (DMX), norfloxacin (NOR), gemfibrozil (GEM), diclofenac (DIC), and warfarin (WAR). In this study, a slow-release fertilizer (SRF) was obtained by occluding NPK 10-10-10 into two matrices and compared with the uncoated mineral fertilizer (F). The first matrix, FOMI, used biosolids/paper sludge at 3:1 (w/w); the second, FOMII, used biosolids/clay at 1:1 (w/w). Materials and pellets were physiochemically and microbiologically characterized. Release kinetics were evaluated in water and in soil columns packed with acid-washed sand; matrix-only controls and sand blanks confirmed negligible background N, P, and K. The uncoated mineral fertilizer (F) showed a rapid burst, whereas oc

Abnormally high-odor detection threshold (DT) values were detected for biosolids produced at one of the water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) of Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. As an inexpensive countermeasure, aeration of thickened sludge holding tanks (SHTs) was tested as a solution for mitigating the subsequent biosolids odor emission. Experimental results indicated that the extremely low-oxidation reduction potential (ORP) in the SHTs and the fermentation of high-rate-activated sludge were primarily contributors to the odor emission from the dewatered cake. Two rounds of benc

Pyrolysis enables ZnCl2 immersed biosolid to be reused, but some hazardous air pollutants are emitted during this process. Physical characteristics of biosolid adsorbents were investigated in this work. In addition, the constituents of pyrolytic exhaust were determined to evaluate the exhaust characteristics. Results indicated that the pyrolytic temperature was higher than 500 °C, the specific surface area was >900 m(2)/g, and the total pore volume was as much as 0.8 cm(3)/g at 600 °C. For non-ZnCl2 immersed biosolid pyrolytic exhaust, VOC emission factors increased from 0.677 to 3.170 mg-VOCs

Wastewater and biosolids are important pathways of chemicals to the environment and thus are often included in monitoring programs. Wastewater samples are often stored frozen when insufficient resources prevent immediate analysis or when samples are included as part of environmental specimen banks. However, the stability of chemical substances in frozen samples is not well known. The objective of this study was to evaluate the stability over a one-year period of three substance groups: bisphenols, halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), and pesticides in frozen (-20 °C) wastewater media. Influent

Biosolids, sewage sludge, and composts are applied to agricultural land for nutrient recovery and soil organic matter replenishment, aligning with sustainable development goals. However, they may contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that can enter the food chain through plant bioaccumulation and leaching into the groundwater. This study analyzed 80 PFAS compounds in sewage sludge, biosolids, commercial composts, and chemical fertilizers in Quebec, Canada, using UHPLC-HRMS (Orbitrap Q-Exactive). PFAS concentrations ranged from 18 to 59 µg/kg in commercial composts, 9.8 to 213 µg/k

Data collected for 35 yr from a 1790-ha strip mine reclamation site in Fulton County, Illinois, where biosolids were applied from 1972 to 2004, were used to evaluate the impacts of long-term biosolids application on metal concentrations in groundwater. Groundwater samples were collected between 1972 and 2006 from wells installed in seven strip-mined fields treated with biosolids at cumulative loading rates of 801 to 1815 dry Mg ha and from another seven fields (also strip mined) treated with mineral fertilizer. Samples were collected monthly between 1972 and 1986 and quarterly between 1987 and

The plant uptake of emerging organic contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) is receiving increased attention. Biosolids from municipal wastewater treatment have been previously identified as a major source for PPCPs. Thus, plant uptake of PPCPs from biosolids applied soils needs to be understood. In the present study, the uptake of carbamazepine, diphenhydramine, and triclocarban by five vegetable crop plants was examined in a field experiment. At the time of harvest, three compounds were detected in all plants grown in biosolids-treated soils. Calculated root

Female reproductive capacity is shaped by ovarian reserve and patterns of follicle development. Ovarian reserve depletion occurs by follicle activation and atresia, which are affected by environmental chemicals (ECs). Because humans are simultaneously exposed to hundreds of ECs, real-life exposure models are essential to assess patterns of atresia after EC exposure. Previous findings demonstrate maternal preconceptional and gestational EC exposure via biosolids increases activation rate and reduces primordial follicle pool in juvenile, but not adult sheep. We hypothesized that this shift invol

Biosolids contain a variety of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Studies have observed the uptake of PPCPs into plants grown in biosolids-amended soils. This study examined the ability of Dynamic Plant Uptake (DPU) model and Biosolids-amended Soil Level IV (BASL4) model to predict the concentration of eight PPCPs in the tissue of plants grown in biosolids-amended soil under a number of exposure scenarios. Concentrations in edible tissue predicted by the models were compared to concentrations reported in the literature by calculating estimated human daily intake values for bot

Municipal biosolids are commonly applied to land as soil amendment or fertilizer as a form of beneficial reuse of what could otherwise be viewed as waste. Balanced against this benefit are potential risks to groundwater and surface water quality from constituents that may be mobilized during storm events. The objective of the present study was to characterize the mobilization of selected endocrine-disrupting compounds, heavy metals, and total estrogenic activity in rainfall runoff from land-applied biosolids. Rainfall simulations were conducted on soil plots amended with biosolids. Surface run

Opioids are widely distributed, potent prescription analgesics that are known to be diverted for illicit use. Their prevalence of use is reflected by high concentrations of parent compounds and/or metabolites found in samples collected from wastewater treatment plants. Given that treatment byproducts enter the environment through several routes, the consequences of insufficient removal by treatment methods include unwanted environmental exposure and potential to disrupt ecosystems. Activated sludge treatment has been widely investigated for a large suite of prescription opioids but the same ca

Municipal biosolids contain organic and inorganic phosphorus (P) that could be recovered for reuse as P fertilizer. Inorganic P compounds include iron phosphates that precipitate and/or adsorbed phosphate ions as a consequence of soluble iron addition in order not to exceed total phosphorus (TP) emission limits. The inorganic orthophosphate (o-Pi) minerals within biosolids can have low solubilities. One P recovery strategy is to maximize the dissolution of o-Pi from biosolids for reuse. Dissolving iron phosphates in biosolids by adding sodium sulfide was assessed as an o-Pi dissolution strateg

This study investigated the behaviour of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) during the stabilisation of "sludge fermented fertiliser" from sewage sludge via 90 °C thermal fermentation at a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Japan. Using high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), 42 PFASs were quantified across production stages, with concentrations dominated by sulphonamides and perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs). The pretreatment stage, which involved mixing dewatered sludge with external materials and matured compost, was identified as a pri

Obligate halophily is extremely rare in fungi. Nevertheless, Aspergillus atacamensis (strain EXF-6660), isolated from a salt water-exposed cave in the Coastal Range hills of the hyperarid Atacama Desert in Chile, is an obligate halophile, with a broad optimum range from 1.5 to 3.4 M of NaCl. When we tested its ability to grow at varied concentrations of both kosmotropic (NaCl, KCl, and sorbitol) and chaotropic (MgCl2, LiCl, CaCl2, and glycerol) solutes, stereoscopy and laser scanning microscopy revealed the formation of phialides and conidia. A. atacamensis EXF-6660 grew up to saturating level

Helminth ova (HO) are the main biological concern when reusing sludge for agricultural production. Worldwide sludge regulations consider a permissible range of 0.25-1 HO/gTS. Such limits are unaffordable to most developing countries, due to high helminth ova content in sludge, and the lack of viable technology to inactivate them as needed. The quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) is a useful tool to estimate the risk of treated sludge, considering feasible and viable limits. QMRA, however, has not been applied before for HO because no dose-infection curve was available. Therefore, the
