Biofilm-associated infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria and fungi impose a substantial global health burden, and conventional antibiotics are increasingly ineffective at eradicating them due to poor penetration of the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix and escalating resistance. Biosurfactants produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have attracted research interest as alternatives, owing to the GRAS status of their producing organisms and their broad mechanistic repertoire. This review critically evaluates the structural diversity of LAB-derived biosurfactants, covering

A sustainable and eco-friendly approach for utilizing sugarcane trash (SCT) biomass is currently under development. The SCT was subjected to a sequential pretreatment process involving microwave irradiation and autoclave heating before extracting alkali lignin. Nanolignin was then synthesized from the extracted lignin. The particle size of the synthesized nanolignin ranged between 65 and 84 nm, according to morphological characterization. This nanolignin was then transformed into a nanolignin/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) biosurfactant via an eco-friendly solvent. The surface tension and functional

Surfactants are a group of amphiphilic molecules (i.e., having both hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains) that are a vital part of nearly every contemporary industrial process such as in agriculture, medicine, personal care, food, and petroleum. In general surfactants can be derived from (i) petroleum-based sources or (ii) microbial/plant origins. Petroleum-based surfactants are obvious results from petroleum products, which lead to petroleum pollution and thus pose severe problems to the environment leading to various ecological damages. Thus, newer techniques have been suggested for deriving

Biofilm-associated infections pose significant challenges due to the increased antibiotic resistance of microorganisms within these structures. This study involved isolating and characterizing the biosurfactant produced by Bacillus subtilis RSL-2 using molasses to develop a sustainable antibiofilm agent. The biosurfactant was identified as a surfactin-like lipopeptide (molecular weight: 1037 g/mol) based on FTIR, 1H NMR, and HRMS analyses. It demonstrated a low critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 70 mg/L and markedly decreased surface and interfacial tensions to 24.46 and 0.46 mN/m, respec

Biosurfactants offer a green, sustainable approach to many environmental bioremediations, especially for oil contamination. In this study, the aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of biosurfactants in accelerating hydrocarbon removal from mature fine tailings under anaerobic conditions. The bacteria were isolated from mature fine tailings and tested for biosurfactant production using different biosurfactant screening methods (i.e., blood agar, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) blue agar, oil displacement, and drop collapse). The most efficient strain showed high similarity to Stutzerimonas

Surfactants can be used as nanoparticle stabilizing agents. However, since synthetic surfactants are not economically viable and environmentally friendly, biosurfactants are emerging as a green alternative for the synthesis and stabilization of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles have been applied in several areas of industry, such as the production of biomedical and therapeutic components, packaging coating, solar energy generation and transmission and distribution of electrical energy, among others. The aim of this study was to synthesize, in a simple and green way, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) usi

Microneedles, a novel transdermal delivery system, were designed to improve drug delivery and address the challenges typically encountered with traditional injection practices. Discovering new and safe excipients for microneedle coating to replace existing chemical surfactants is advantageous to minimize their side effect on viable tissues. However, some side effects have also been observed for this application. The vast majority of studies suggest that using synthetic surfactants in microneedle formulations may result in skin irritation among other adverse effects. Hence, increasing knowledge

Biosurfactants are a unique class of compounds that have been shown to have a variety of potential applications in the remediation of organic- and metal-contaminated sites, in the enhanced transport of bacteria, in enhanced oil recovery, as cosmetic additives, and in biological control. However, little is known about the distribution of biosurfactant-producing bacteria in the environment. The goal of this study was to determine how common culturable surfactant-producing bacteria are in undisturbed and contaminated sites. A series of 20 contaminated (i.e., with metals and/or hydrocarbons) and u

Sugarcane trash (SCT), with moderate lignin and high cellulose, is a promising feedstock for valuable chemicals and advanced materials. SCT underwent sequential pretreatment using microwave irradiation followed by autoclave heating before alkali lignin extraction. Lignin was isolated using maleic acid (MA) with varying concentrations and pH levels. Optimum lignin was converted into nanolignin using a self-assembly method with THF: ethanol solvent ratios of 1:1 (nanolignin A) and 1:2 (nanolignin B). The best-performing nanolignin and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were synthesized into a biosurfactant

Biobased, self-organizing molecules are of considerable interest as functional materials due to their structural versatility, sophisticated nanoarchitectures, and sustainable biosynthesis. Here, we study the self-assembly of a systematic series of bioconjugate sophorolipid-functionalized zinc porphyrin complexes with potential applications in optoelectronic devices. Our results provide insight into the molecular features that control the polymerization pathway, in particular the influence of carbohydrate chirality and noncovalent hydrogen-bonding on biosurfactant-driven self-organization of so

The applicability of the combined solubilization-biodegradation process was examined using soil-packed column. In the solubilization step, 50 pore volumes of 150 mg/l biosurfactants solution was injected and the percentage removal of phenanthrene (mg) was 17.3% and 9.5% from soil with pH 5 and 7, respectively. The highest solubility was detected at pH 5 and this result confirmed that adjusting the pH of the biosurfactants solution injected could enhance the solubility of phenanthrene. Following this, soil samples were completely transferred to batches and incubated for 10 weeks to monitor phen

Acne is one of the most common dermatological skin problem caused due to inflammation of the skin, leading to unfavorable growth of Propionibacterium acnes. It is a slow growing anaerobic, gram-positive bacterium that releases chemotactic factors and leads to the complex pathogenicity of acne. There are several acne treatments/therapies available, but topical therapy is usually the first choice for mild to moderate acne, and as the severity of the acne increases, the treatment modalities fail. There are many acne treatment options available, but topical therapy is best suited for mild - to - m

The rising prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens across clinical, agricultural, and environmental settings underscores the urgent need for alternative antimicrobial agents. In this study, biosurfactants produced by Serratia marcescens were extracted, isolated, and characterized to assess their broad-spectrum antimicrobial potential. The S. marcescens-derived biosurfactant (SMBS) demonstrated strong surface activity, confirmed through oil spreading (19.4 mm), drop collapse, and a high emulsification index (%E24 of 74.8% with olive oil). Structural characterization using HPTLC, FTIR,
