Biodegradation of crude petroleum and petroleum products by fungi isolated from two oil seeds (melon and soybean).

Crude petroleum oil degrading fungi were isolated from two oil seeds, Cucumeropsis mannii (melon) and Glycine max (soybean) seeds in the presence and absence of petroleum fumes. An assessment of the relative ability of each fungus to degrade crude petroleum, diesel and kerosene on minimum salt solution was done using change in optical density read on spectrophotometer. Twenty-one fungal species (14 genera) were isolated altogether during this experiment. These include eight species of Aspergillus; one species each of Botryodiplodia, Bipolaris, Cladosporium, Cunnighamella, Dreschlera, Fusarium,

Pathogen-mediated priming induces intergenerational immunity against spot blotch in wheat.

Spot blotch, caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana, is one of the most destructive diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum), particularly in warm and humid regions where yield losses may exceed 30-50%. Heavy dependence on fungicides is neither sustainable nor environmentally safe, creating an urgent need for innovative strategies to enhance crop resilience. Defense priming, a phenomenon in which prior exposure to a mild stimulus enables plants to mount faster and stronger defenses upon subsequent stress offers a promising alternative. Pathogens or pathogen-derived molecules such as PAMPs and effectors

European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Fungal Infection Study Group (EFISG) and European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) 2013 joint guidelines on diagnosis and management of rare and emerging fungal diseases.

This guideline is the second in the line of three for fungal diseases by ESCMID and other societies. The guideline tried to follow the AGREE criteria for the development of clinical guidelines. This guideline serves as a European and potentially world-wide recommendation for the diagnosis and management of rare and emerging fungi. They include mucormycosis, hyalohyphomycosis (Fusarium, Paecilomyces, Scedosporium, etc.), phaeohyphomycosis (Alternaria, Bipolaris, Cladosporium, Rhinocladiella, etc.), and emerging yeasts (Saccharomyces, Trichosporon, Rhodotorula, etc.).

Disseminated phaeohyphomycosis in a dog.

Phaeohyphomycosis is a rare but emerging disease caused by dematiaceous fungi. Here we describe the case of an immunosuppressed dog with disseminated phaeohyphomycosis secondary to Bipolaris spicifera infection. Regionally extensive infiltration of the paw pads, skin, myocardium, liver, renal interstitium and diaphragm was identified on histopathology. Candida glabrata and Fusarium oxysporum were also cultured from multiple sites post-mortem. The dog was treated with fluconazole, itraconazole, terbinafine and liposomal amphotericin B, but was euthanized due to its poor prognosis after 12 days

Isolation and identification of bioactive substance 1-hydroxyphenazine from Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its antimicrobial activity.

A strain named as Pseudomonas aeruginosa 2016NX1, which could produce phenazine and cereusitin, was isolated from the root of Millettia specisoa. Phenazines were extracted, isolated and purified by chloroform, thin-layer chromatography, column chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography. Then the purified materials were identified by analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance. The major yellow component is 1-hydroxyphenazine and the minor blue component is cereusitin A. The tests of antimicrobial activity of yellow component showed that the growth of several common plant pathogenic f

T-Toxin Virulence Genes: Unconnected Dots in a Sea of Repeats.

In 1970, the Southern Corn Leaf Blight epidemic ravaged U.S. fields to great economic loss. The outbreak was caused by never-before-seen, supervirulent, Race T of the fungus Cochliobolus heterostrophus. The functional difference between Race T and O, the previously known, far less aggressive strain, is production of T-toxin, a host-selective polyketide. Supervirulence is associated with ~1 Mb of Race T-specific DNA; only a fraction encodes T-toxin biosynthetic genes (Tox1). Tox1 is genetically and physically complex, with unlinked loci (Tox1A, Tox1B) genetically inseparable from breakpoints of

Unveiling rare fungal pathogens: clinical insights and molecular identification in fungal keratitis cases.

This study discusses four cases of fungal keratitis (FK) caused by uncommon fungal pathogens. It's important to note that FK caused by these species is either rare or has not been reported before. Rare fungal pathogens including Subramaniula lateralis, Inocutis levis, Neoscytalidium dimidiatum, and Bipolaris panini-miliacei were identified in corneal scraping specimens. Patients were treated with systemic and topical antifungal agents, and surgical intervention was performed when necessary. This report emphasizes the importance of considering rare fungal species in cases of keratitis, highligh

Dematiaceous Molds.

Dematiaceous molds are darkly pigmented environmental molds found worldwide, especially prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. Common genera include Bipolaris, Cladophialophora, Exophiala, and Alternaria. They cause disease in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals, presenting as cutaneous infections, allergic sinusitis, pneumonia, and, rarely, disseminated infections. Contaminated medical products have also led to fungal meningitis outbreaks. Treatment typically involves itraconazole, voriconazole, or posaconazole, along with source control and reduction in immunosuppr

An unusual phaeoid fungi: Ulocladium, as a cause of chronic allergic fungal sinusitis.

Allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS) has been recognized as an important cause of chronic sinusitis commonly caused by Aspergillus spp. and various dematiaceous fungi like Bipolaris, Alternaria, Curvalaria, and etc. Ulocladium botrytis is a non pathogenic environmental dematiaceous fungi, which has been recently described as a human pathogen. Ulocladium has never been associated with allergic fungal sinusitis but it was identified as an etiological agent of AFS in a 35 year old immunocompetent female patient presenting with chronic nasal obstruction of several months duration to our hospital. Antifungal Biphenyl Derivatives from Sorbus pohuashanensis Leaves Infected by Alternaria tenuissi and Their Effect against Crop Pathogens.

Eight natural biphenyl-type phytoalexins exhibiting antifungal effect were isolated from the leaves of Sorbus pohuashanensis, which invaded by Alternaria tenuissi, and their growth inhibition rate towards A. tenuissi were 50.3 %, 54.0 %, 66.4 %, 58.8 %, 48.5 %, 51.0 %, 33.3 %, and 37.0 %, respectively. In vivo activity assay verified the protective effect of these natural biphenyls on tobacco leaves. The observation of mycelial morphology revealed that these compounds possessed adverse effects on mycelial growth of A. tenuissi. Subsequently, the most potent active compounds, 3',4',5'-trimethox

Dematiaceous Fungal Colonization of the Bandage Contact Lens in a Patient Lost to Follow-up During the COVID-19 Crisis.

We report a rare case of dematiaceous fungus colonization in the therapeutic bandage contact lens (BCL), in an eye with peripheral ulcerative keratitis. Bandage contact lens removal and appropriate treatment resulted in improvement of the visual acuity and prevented the spread of fungus to the underlying ocular structures. Microbiological evaluation of the BCL showed dematiaceous fungal filaments, and the fungus was identified as Bipolaris species. In patients with pigmented plaque-like lesions, with BCL in situ, dematiaceous fungus on the undersurface of the BCL should be kept in mind. Patien

A review of mycotic nasal granuloma in cattle, with a report on three cases.

Three cases of nasal mycotic granuloma containing fungal cells and hyphae in cattle are described. In 2 animals a mucopurulent or purulent nasal discharge was seen clinically, and epistaxis in the third. Histologically, ulceration of the nasal mucosa and a severe granulomatous inflammation of the nasal submucosa with eosinophils as the predominant cell type were evident in the cattle. Non-pigmented fungal cells identified as chlamydospores and short septate hyphae were demonstrated in giant cells and extracellularly within the granulomatous reactions. In one case, the fungal elements were freq

Subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exserohilum rostratum in an immunocompetent host.

A healthy, 55-year-old woman developed a subcutaneous abscess and systemic symptoms of nausea, dizziness, and chills following minor trauma to her leg. Histopathologic examination of a skin biopsy specimen revealed golden-brown colored mycelial elements, and culture resulted in growth of a dematiaceous fungus identified as Exserohilum rostratum. Surgical excision of the abscess and concomitant oral therapy with ketoconazole resulted in resolution of symptoms. In previously reported cases of human phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exserohilum and related Bipolaris species in both immunocompromised an
