Variation in Tick Load Among Bird Body Parts: Implications for Studying the Role of Birds in the Ecology and Epidemiology of Tick-Borne Diseases.

Wild birds play important roles in the maintenance and dispersal of tick populations and tick-borne pathogens, yet in field studies of tick-borne disease ecology and epidemiology there is limited standardization of how birds are searched for ticks. We conducted a qualitative literature review of 100 field studies where birds were searched for ticks to characterize which parts of a bird's anatomy are typically sampled. To increase understanding of potential biases associated with different sampling approaches, we described variation in tick loads among bird body parts using field-collected data

Species Composition and Feeding Behaviors of Vector Mosquitoes of Avian Infectious Diseases at a Wild Bird Rehabilitation Facility in Japan.

Although wild bird rehabilitation facilities are important for the conservation of wild species, individuals may be kept within the facilities for long periods, consequently posing a risk for the bird to be infected with pathogens to which they are not naturally exposed. In turn, novel pathogens may be introduced through rescued migratory species. Avian malaria and West Nile fever are important avian diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. To understand the transmission dynamics of such diseases at rehabilitation facilities, the ecology of vector mosquitoes, including species composition, seasonal

Investigation of Newcastle Disease Virus Infection in Pet Birds in the Southwest of Iran.

Tribulus Terrestris (TT) is a common herbal plant with different categories that grows in many countries of the world. Traditional Chinese and Indian therapies have used TT for infertility treatment and also as a powerful antioxidant agent. Therefore, this study aimed to use this plant supplemented with vitamin E to study their combined effects on the histological condition of the testicle and epididymis of rabbits. This study was performed on 28 healthy male rabbits (445-950 g, 2.0-3.0 months old) that were randomly divided into four groups (n=7). All animals were subjected to clinical examin

Evidence of spread of the emerging infectious disease, finch trichomonosis, by migrating birds.

Finch trichomonosis emerged in Great Britain in 2005 and led to epidemic mortality and a significant population decline of greenfinches, Carduelis chloris and chaffinches, Fringilla coelebs, in the central and western counties of England and Wales in the autumn of 2006. In this article, we show continued epidemic spread of the disease with a pronounced shift in geographical distribution towards eastern England in 2007. This was followed by international spread to southern Fennoscandia where cases were confirmed at multiple sites in the summer of 2008. Sequence data of the ITS1/5.8S/ITS2 riboso

Bird-Borrelia Interactions: A Historical Review and Their Significance for Human Disease Ecology.

Research increasingly identifies wild birds, particularly long-distance migratory species, as epidemiologically relevant hosts and vectors for tick-borne Borrelia species that pose risks to both avian and human health. This review contextualizes avian-associated Borrelia research historically and microbiologically, showing the role of avian hosts in the ecology of agents causing relapsing fever and Lyme borreliosis. We identify key publications that trace the evolution of Borrelia research-from early microscopic observations of spirochetes to the modern molecular and serological evidence. The

Immune responses and recovery from spotty liver disease in layer birds.

Spotty Liver Disease (SLD), caused by Campylobacter hepaticus, greatly impacts the health and egg production of affected layer hens and is a disease of concern in the poultry industry. This study aimed to enhance the understanding of the immune response in chickens to C. hepaticus infection and their ability to resist reinfections. One hundred- and twenty-layer chickens were allocated to 10 groups and challenged, from one to three times, with C. hepaticus HV10T, with six weeks between each challenge. Blood and cloacal swabs were collected every three weeks to assess antibody responses and Camp

Metatranscriptomic Analysis of Virus Diversity in Urban Wild Birds with Paretic Disease.

Wild birds are major natural reservoirs and potential dispersers of a variety of infectious diseases. As such, it is important to determine the diversity of viruses they carry and use this information to help understand the potential risks of spillover to humans, domestic animals, and other wildlife. We investigated the potential viral causes of paresis in long-standing, but undiagnosed, disease syndromes in wild Australian birds. RNA from diseased birds was extracted and pooled based on tissue type, host species, and clinical manifestation for metagenomic sequencing. Using a bulk and unbiased

Gastrointestinal Disease Associated with Non-albicans Candida Species in Six Birds.

A non-albicans Candida species was identified in 6 birds exhibiting clinical signs associated with gastrointestinal disease. The clinical disease signs noted in these 6 birds included diarrhea, regurgitation, and melena, and were considered concurrent or identified secondary to other comorbidities. Candida glabrata was identified in a yellow-naped Amazon parrot (Amazona auropalliata), a ring-necked dove (Streptopelia capicola), a blue-and-gold macaw (Ara ararauna), and 2 cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus). Candida krusei was identified in a white-crowned parrot (Pionus senilis). Fungal culture

Innate immunity and the evolution of resistance to an emerging infectious disease in a wild bird.

Innate immunity is expected to play a primary role in conferring resistance to novel infectious diseases, but few studies have attempted to examine its role in the evolution of resistance to emerging pathogens in wild vertebrate populations. Here, we used experimental infections and cDNA microarrays to examine whether changes in the innate and/or acquired immune responses likely accompanied the emergence of resistance in house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) in the eastern United States subject to a recent outbreak of conjunctivitis-causing bacterium (Mycoplasma gallisepticum-MG). Three days fo

Zoonotic diseases of common pet birds: psittacine, passerine, and columbiform species.

Zoonotic transmission of disease from pet birds is uncommon, but there are some recognized dangers. Most notably, Chlamydophila psittaci can be transmitted from pet birds to humans. Allergic responses to pet birds, including pneumonitis and contact dermatitis, have also been documented. Bite wounds from pet birds are rarely reported but can cause trauma and develop infection. The other diseases discussed here are considered potential zoonotic diseases of pet birds because of either isolated reports of suspected but unconfirmed transmission to humans or from reports of wild conspecifics being r

Phenotypic and genomic characterization of Castellaniella ginsengisoli, an emerging pathogen associated with disease in birds.

The environmental bacterium Castellaniella revealed its clinical relevance from case reports, causing fatal infections in animals. The lack of phenotypic and genomic characterization may have historically contributed to the scattered identification of Castellaniella in the field and in the laboratory. This pioneer study addressed this knowledge gap by performing phenotypic and genomic characterization of C. ginsengisoli isolated from 22 clinical cases of chickens. We observed that C. ginsengisoli isolates exhibited three colony morphologies on blood agar and presented flagella under transmissi

Use of Cyclosporine and Itraconazole as Palliative Treatment for Proventricular Dilatation Disease in Psittacine Birds.

Proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) is a neurologic syndrome of birds caused by the infectious agent Psittacine Bornavirus (PaBV). Clinical disease may be based on the T-cell-mediated immune response to PaBV within the central and peripheral nervous system, similar to Borna disease virus, a closely related mammalian virus. Lymphoplasmacytic infiltrations may occur in ganglia, nerve plexuses, peripheral nerves and the central nervous system of the infected bird. Clinical disease may result in multiple neurologic disorders and life-threatening morbidity. Treatment of PDD with antivirals and

Comparison of Marek's Disease Virus Challenge Strains and Bird Types for Vaccine Licensing.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) is an important poultry pathogen that is controlled through widespread vaccination with avirulent and attenuated strains. However, continued evolution of field viruses to higher virulence has required ongoing improvement of available vaccine strains, and these vaccine strains offer an attractive platform for designing recombinant vector vaccines with cross-protection against MDV and additional pathogens. Recent reports of failures in vaccine licensing trials of positive controls to reach appropriately high levels of Marek's disease incidence prompted us to evaluate

Deadly outbreak of iron storage disease (ISD) in Italian birds of the family Turdidae.

A widespread deadly outbreak occurred in captive birds belonging to the family Turdidae in Italy. The present study was performed on 46 dead birds coming from 3 small decoy-bird breeders in central Italy. Only Turdus pilaris, Turdus iliacus, Turdus philomelos and Turdus merula were affected. No other species of bird held by these breeders died. A change of diet before the hunting season was reported from all breeders. Full necropsy of the animals and histological investigations of representative tissue samples were performed. Microscopical examination showed marked iron deposits in liver sampl
