Interpregnancy interval, air pollution, and the risk of low birth weight: a retrospective study in China.

BACKGROUND: Both interpregnancy intervals (IPI) and environmental factors might contribute to low birth weight (LBW). However, the extent to which air pollution influences the effect of IPIs on LBW remains unclear. We aimed to investigate whether IPI and air pollution jointly affect LBW. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was designed in this study. The data of birth records was collected from the Jiangsu Maternal Child Information System, covering January 2020 to June 2021 in Nantong city, China. IPI was defined as the duration between the delivery date for last live birth and date of LMP

Effect of antenatal corticosteroid administration-to-birth interval on maternal and newborn outcomes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) are highly effective at improving outcomes for preterm newborns. Evidence suggests the benefits of ACS may vary with the time interval between administration-to-birth. However, the optimal ACS administration-to-birth interval is not yet known. In this systematic review, we synthesised available evidence on the relationship between ACS administration-to-birth interval and maternal and newborn outcomes. METHODS: This review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021253379). We searched Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Global Index Medicus on 11

A Population-Based Study of Factors Associated with Postpartum Contraceptive Use by Birth Interval Length.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors associated with postpartum contraceptive use among women with short and moderate-to-long birth intervals using population-based data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment and Monitoring System. METHODS: Because only Mississippi and Tennessee include a question about birth interval length on their Pregnancy Risk Assessment and Monitoring System survey, this analysis was limited to women from those states who reported information on this variable (N = 2198). Demographic, lifestyle, and reproductive data, including information on postpart

Is there an ideal interpregnancy interval after a live birth, miscarriage or other adverse pregnancy outcomes?

Advice given to women regarding optimum interpregnancy interval (IPI) following spontaneous miscarriage remains controversial. There is robust evidence from many studies including a meta-analysis that after full term or pre-term delivery, IPIs of <18 months and >5 years are associated with increased risk of poor perinatal and maternal outcome. However, there is paucity of good studies to infer the effect of IPI after a spontaneous miscarriage, which is a relatively common event. The results have been variable and inconsistent but a recent good quality study (DaVanzo et al. 2007 ) showed simila

Longer interval between maternal RSV vaccination and birth increases placental transfer efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is associated with significant neonatal and infant morbidity and mortality. Maternal bivalent RSVpreF RSV vaccination to protect neonates and infants was approved in September 2023 for administration between 32+0 and 36+6 weeks to protect neonates and infants. This approved timeframe is narrower than the 24-36 week window evaluated in the clinical trial, due to the possible association between preterm birth and vaccine administration. Currently, data are lacking on how maternal vaccine timing within the approved window affects the transfer of antib

The Ngaglik study: an inquiry into birth interval dynamics and maternal and child health in rural Java.

Preliminary analysis of the Ngaglik Study has been able to confirm much of what we knew about birth interval dynamics from past retrospective studies, while also adding new insights into birth spacing and maternal and child health in rural Java. In Ngaglik, a median duration of breast-feeding of over 2 years is associated with durations of lactational amenorrhoea of over a year on average, despite the very early introduction of other foods in the infant diet. Postpartum abstinence appears to play a role in birth spacing for many women, though as previous research has shown, it does not extend

The relationship between birth intervals and adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes in six low and lower-middle income countries.

BACKGROUND: Due to high fertility rates in some low and lower-middle income countries, the interval between pregnancies can be short, which may lead to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: We analyzed data from women enrolled in the NICHD Global Network Maternal Newborn Health Registry (MNHR) from 2013 through 2018. We report maternal characteristics and outcomes in relationship to the inter-delivery interval (IDI, time from previous delivery [live or stillborn] to the delivery of the index birth), by category of 6-17 months (short), 18-36 months (reference), 37-60 months, and 61-

Greater sympathoadrenal activation with longer preventilation intervals after immediate cord clamping increases hemodynamic lability at birth in preterm lambs.

This study tested the hypothesis that varying degrees of hemodynamic fluctuations seen after birth following immediate cord clamping were related to development of asphyxia with longer cord clamp-to-ventilation intervals, resulting in higher perinatal circulating levels of the catecholamines norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (Epi), and thus increased heart rate, blood pressures, and cardiac contractility after birth. Anesthetized preterm fetal lambs were instrumented with 1) aortic (AoT) and pulmonary trunk (PT) micromanometers to obtain pressures and the maximal rate of pressure rise (dP/dt

Short Birth Intervals, Maternal Care, and Neonatal Mortality in Rwanda: A Facility-Based Retrospective Cohort Study Using Hierarchical Modelling.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality remains a major public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa. Evidence from facility-based studies may be affected by selection and referral biases. This study examined the association between short birth intervals, maternal care, and other maternal, reproductive, and healthcare factors at different causal levels and neonatal mortality in a referral hospital in Rwanda, using a hierarchical modelling approach. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among 1042 mother-neonate pairs admitted between 2022 and 2023. Variables were grouped into distal (soci

A dynamic framework for the study of optimal birth intervals reveals the importance of sibling competition and mortality risks.

Human reproductive patterns have been well studied, but the mechanisms by which physiology, ecology and existing kin interact to affect the life history need quantification. Here, we create a model to investigate how age-specific interbirth intervals adapt to environmental and intrinsic mortality, and how birth patterns can be shaped by competition and help between siblings. The model provides a flexible framework for studying the processes underlying human reproductive scheduling. We developed a state-based optimality model to determine age-dependent and family-dependent sets of reproductive

Short birth interval and associated factors among women who gave birth in the last three years in Dembecha district, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and child mortality remains a major public health problem in Ethiopia. Improving short birth interval practice is a main strategy to reduce neonatal mortality, maternal mortality, adverse pregnancy outcomes, high fertility rate, and enhance economic development efforts. However, there has been limited study done regarding short birth intervals in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed to assess short birth intervals and associated factors among women who gave birth in the last three years in Dembecha district, Northwest Ethiopia, 2019. METHOD: A community-based cross

Exploring machine learning algorithms to predict short birth intervals and identify its determinants among reproductive-age women in East Africa.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of short birth intervals among reproductive-age women in East Africa is a critical public health issue, contributing to maternal and child health risks. Identifying the key factors that predict short birth intervals can help design targeted interventions to reduce these risks. Hence, this study aimed to predict short birth intervals and identify their determinants using supervised machine learning models. METHOD: This study employs machine learning algorithms to predict short birth intervals among reproductive-age women in East Africa, using a dataset from Demograph

Maternal Age Differences in Interpregnancy Interval and Preterm Birth Associations Accounting for Multiple Epidemiologic Biases.

BACKGROUND: People who recently gave birth are strongly advised to wait 6 months before attempting pregnancy. Interpregnancy intervals (IPI) of ≥ 18 months are considered optimal. Current guidance is not tailored based on maternal characteristics (e.g., age). OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether maternal age modifies IPI-preterm birth (PTB) associations. METHODS: From a US retrospective cohort of multiparae (1997-2011), we categorised IPI: < 6, 6-11, 12-17, 18-23 (reference), 24-59 or ≥ 60 months. PTB occurred before 37 0/7 weeks' gestation. We estimated risk ratios (RR) between IPI and PTB usin

Child Protection System Removal and Short-Interval Births Among Individuals With Prenatal Substance Use.

Child protection systems often intervene after substance-exposed births but are not designed to address the postpartum needs of the delivering parent. In this retrospective cohort study, we aimed to estimate the association between early child protection system removal and high-risk subsequent birth trajectories among a cohort of mothers with substance-exposed births in California. Of 6,893 births in 2015 with documented prenatal drug and alcohol exposure, 20.4% of mothers experienced child protection system removal within 30 days after birth. First-month child protection system removal was as

Intrapartum time intervals and transfer of nulliparae from community births to maternity care units in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Over one-third of nulliparae planning births either at home or in freestanding midwife-led birthing centers (community births) in high-income countries are transferred during labor. Perinatal data are reported each year in Germany for women planning community birth. So far, data sets have not been linked to describe time-related factors associated with nulliparous transfer to hospital. OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence of referral for nulliparae and assess maternal and labor characteristics associated with intrapartum transfer. METHODS: Perinatal data from 2010 to 2015 were

Extended Interval Aminoglycoside Treatment for Klebsiella Pneumoniae Endocarditis in an Extremely Low Birth Weight Neonate.

Infective endocarditis (IE) in neonates is associated with high mortality and incidence has been increasing over the past two decades. The majority of very low birth weight infants will be treated with at least one nephrotoxic medication during their hospital course. Over one-quarter of very low birth weight neonates exposed to gentamicin may develop acute kidney injury (AKI); this is particularly worrisome as AKI is an independent factor associated with increased neonatal mortality and increased length of stay. AKI during periods of neonatal nephrogenesis, which continues until 34-36 weeks po
