Perinatal outcome and long-term hospitalization of triplets according to birth order.

PURPOSE: The association between birth order and adverse perinatal outcomes has been well studied in twin pregnancies. However, little is known about the differences in immediate perinatal outcomes as well as long-term hospitalization of the offspring in triplet pregnancies according to their birth order. As such, we aimed to assess the differences in immediate perinatal outcomes and long-term hospitalizations among triplets by their birth order. METHODS: In a retrospective hospital-based cohort study, immediate perinatal outcomes and long-term hospitalizations were compared among triplet sib

Sibling sex ratio and birth order in early-onset gender dysphoric adolescents.

Several sibship-related variables have been studied extensively in sexual orientation research, especially in men. Sibling sex ratio refers to the ratio of brothers to sisters in the aggregate sibships of a group of probands. Birth order refers to the probands' position (e.g., first-born, middle-born, last-born) within their sibships. Fraternal birth order refers to their position among male siblings only. Such research was extended in this study to a large group of early-onset gender dysphoric adolescents. The probands comprised 94 male-to-female and 95 female-to-male gender dysphoric adolesc

Neurodevelopmental outcomes of triplets or higher-order extremely low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Extremely low birth weight twins have a higher rate of death or neurodevelopmental impairment than singletons. Higher-order extremely low birth weight multiple births may have an even higher rate of death or neurodevelopmental impairment. METHODS: Extremely low birth weight (birth weight 401-1000 g) multiple births born in participating centers of the Neonatal Research Network between 1996 and 2005 were assessed for death or neurodevelopmental impairment at 18 to 22 months' corrected age. Neurodevelopmental impairment was defined by the presence of 1 or more of the following: mode

Mother's age, birth order and health status in a British national sample.

Using data from a longitudinal study of a national sample of British children, it is shown that mother's age and experience with child rearing are related to the attention paid to the child's health. Younger mothers, whose children are usually the first born, tend to be more concerned with health care facility use than are older mothers of children born subsequently. Younger mothers more often take their child to infant and toddler clinics, and are more likely to have their child immunized against the most threatening of childhood diseases. It is also the younger mothers who more often seek me

Effects of birth order, gender, and intrauterine growth retardation on the outcome of very low birth weight in twins.

We hypothesized that gender and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) have greater effects than birth order on mortality and morbidity rates of very low birth weight (< 1501 gm) twins. Neonatal data were collected on 44 pairs of twins born alive between January 1984 and December 1987. Birth weight was 1018 +/- 289 gm and gestational age was 28.1 +/- 2.5 weeks. The male/female ratio was 46:42; 24 infants had IUGR, and 64 were appropriate in size for gestational age. Of the 88 infants, 61 (69%) survived. Birth order had no effect on outcome. Female twin pairs had a longer gestation than either

The Effect of Birth Order on Neonatal Morbidity and Mortality in Very Preterm Twins.

Objective  This retrospective cohort study examined the effect of birth order on neonatal morbidity and mortality in very preterm twins. Study Design Using 2005 to 2012 data from the Canadian Neonatal Network, very preterm twins born between 24 0/7 and 32 6/7 weeks of gestation were included. Odds of morbidity and mortality of second-born cotwins compared with first-born cotwins were examined by matched-pair analysis. Outcomes were neonatal death, severe brain injury (intraventricular hemorrhage grade 3 or 4 or persistent periventricular echogenicity), bronchopulmonary dysplasia, severe retino

Respiratory morbidity in twins by birth order, gestational age and mode of delivery.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between respiratory morbidity in twins by gestational age, birth order and mode of delivery. METHODS: All twin deliveries at <37 weeks, registered in a national database, in the period 2003-2012 were classified into four gestational age groups: 33-36, 30-32, 28-29, and <28 weeks. Outcome variables included transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN), respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and need for assisted ventilation. RESULTS: A total of 1836 twins were born vaginally, and 2142 twins were born by cesarean delivery, for a grand total of 3978 twins. TTN d

Separate influences of birth order and gravidity/parity on the development of systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Birth order has been valuable in revealing the role of environmental influences on the risk of developing certain diseases such as allergy and atopy. In addition, pregnancy has profound effects on the immune system such as short-term effects that permit fetal survival as well as longer-term effects that could influence late-onset diseases. In order to better evaluate these influences, we studied the association of birth order and gravidity/parity as risk factors for systemic sclerosis (SSc; scleroderma). METHODS: Data regarding SSc cases and their unaffected sibling controls were o

The effect of age on the relationship between birth order and immunoglobulin E sensitization.

BACKGROUND: An association between birth order and IgE sensitization or allergic diseases has been reported in many studies. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of age on the relationship between reduced IgE sensitization and increased birth order and to test the hypothesis that this would decline with increasing age. METHODS: As part of a birth cohort study, IgE sensitization to common allergens was determined by skin prick testing at ages 6 and 12 months, 6 and 11 years. RESULTS: The original cohort numbered 253 individuals of whom 96 (38%) were first born. Compared with individuals with olde

Number of siblings and birth order of sexually dysfunctional males and sexual delinquents.

We compared the number of siblings and the birth order of a group of 600 sexually dysfunctional males with those of groups of sexual delinquents. The sexual delinquents included: 238 sexual aggressors, 249 exhibitionists, 437 pedophilic and 57 homosexual delinquents. We found that patients treated for sexual dysfunctions had a significantly higher incidence of only-children than each of the sexually delinquent groups. Pedophilic and homosexual delinquents were more frequently the last of three or more children, a difference that was significant when compared with the sexually dysfunctional men

Birth order in transgendered males from Polynesia: a quantitative study of Samoan fa'afāfine.

In previous research, a late birth order has been shown to be a characteristic of Western homosexual transsexual men. To date, however, it is not clear if a late birth order is specific to Western transsexuals or may be a characteristic of non-Western transgendered males as well. We quantified birth order in a sample of 13 transgendered males known as fa'afāfine from Samoa. On average, the fa'afāfine were late born, both with regard to number of older brothers and number of older sisters, although the effect appeared to be somewhat stronger with regard to number of older brothers. We consider

Bulimia nervosa: family size, sibling sex and birth order. A catchment-area study.

Family size, sex of siblings and birth order were examined in 225 bulimic patients of normal weight, all stemming from the same circumscribed catchment area. Although bulimia can occur in any size family, all-female sibships were significantly over-represented. In small families at least, the bulimic patient was highly likely to be the only or eldest daughter. In small sibships, a bulimic who was first-born was significantly more likely to have a younger sister; if second-born she was more likely to have an elder brother. Despite the very large sample size, no final conclusion can be made on b

Do socioeconomic and birth order gradients in child maltreatment differ by immigrant status?

BACKGROUND: While literature has documented strong gradients in child maltreatment (CM) by socioeconomic status and family composition in the general population, how these patterns extend to immigrants remain inconclusive. Using population-based administrative data, we examined, for the first time, whether gradients in CM by neighbourhood income and childbirth order vary by immigrant status. METHODS: We used linked hospitalisation, emergency department visits, small-area income, birth and death records with an official Canadian immigration database to create a retrospective cohort of all 1 24

The effect of birth order on length of hospitalization for pediatric traumatic brain injury: an analysis of the 1987 Finnish birth cohort.

PURPOSE: This study examines the relationship between birth order and length of hospitalization due to pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: We prospectively followed 59,469 Finnish newborns from 1987 until age 18 years. Data on first diagnosis of TBI was recorded within the 1987 Finnish Birth Cohort (FBC). Hospitalization period was divided into two categories: 2 days or less and more than 2 days. The latter was considered in this study as longer hospitalization. RESULTS: Compared with first born siblings, later born siblings had an increased risk of a longer hospitalization for

Birth order pattern in the inheritance of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and related lymphoproliferative disease.

Rank order of affected offspring in a sibship can inform on epigenetic factors in disease susceptibility. Here we report an analysis of birth order in 32 families segregating chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. A paternal-offspring, but not a maternal-offspring birth rank order was observed. Cox regression analysis provided relative risks (RR) for paternal and maternal transmission of 3.60 (CI 95%: 1.54 - 8.42; P = 0.0005) and 1.64 (CI 95%: 0.90 - 3.01; P = 0.096), respectively. The significance of paternal and maternal transmission of CLL-CLL pa
