Stigma and suicide among gay and bisexual men living with HIV.

HIV positive gay and bisexual men (GBM) continue to struggle with the pervasiveness of HIV stigma, but little is known about the health effects of stigma. In this article, suicidal ideation and attempts are measured among GBM living with HIV, evaluating the extent to which these experiences are associated with stigma and suicide. Drawing from an online national survey of Canadian GBM completed by 7995 respondents, a sub-set of data provided by respondents self-reporting HIV-positive status was used for the current study. The associations between suicidal ideation (SI) and attempts (SA) and fou

Depression in Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

PURPOSE: Lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals have been shown to have different risks for mood and anxiety disorders than heterosexuals in population studies, but there is a paucity of research in this area in military populations. This study examined the relationship between sexual orientation and depression in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). METHODS: Data were drawn from the Canadian Forces Mental Health Survey 2013 (n = 8165), a representative sample of Regular and Reserve members of the Canadian military. Binomial logistic regression was used to predict 12-month and lifetime odds ratios for

Do Psychological Sex Differences Reflect Evolutionary Bisexual Partitioning?

This article analyzes sex differences in communicative and exploratory abilities and mental disabilities from the rarely discussed perspective of sex differences in the shape of phenotypic distributions. The article reviews the most consistent findings related to such differences and compares them with the evolutionary theory of sex (ETS). The ETS considers sexual dimorphism as a functional specialization of a species into 2 partitions: variational and conservational. The analysis suggests that male superiority in risk and sensation seeking and physical abilities; higher rates of psychopathy,

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health: fundamentals for nursing education.

As the health care needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population become increasingly important, health care professionals require appropriate academic and clinical training in preparation for the increased demand for culturally competent care. Nurses are of particular interest, as they are the core direct caregivers in many health care settings. This article explores the national climate around LGBT individuals and their related health needs. Educators and administrators who work with future nurses should strive to ensure they foster the development of knowledgeable pr

The invisible elderly: lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults.

More than 2 million older adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). The purpose of this article is to present an overview of the physical and mental health needs of LGBT older adults to sensitize nurses to the specific needs of this group. Nurses are in a prominent position to create health care environments that will meet the needs of this invisible, and often misunderstood, group of people.

Sexual victimization and associated risks among lesbian and bisexual women.

This study examines relationships among childhood sexual abuse (CSA), risky alcohol use, and adult sexual victimization among bisexual and lesbian women. Half (51.2%) of women reported CSA and 71.2% reported adult sexual victimization. Perpetrators were generally male, and 56.4% of women's most recent adult sexual victimization incidents occurred after coming out. Regression results indicated that adult sexual victimization severity was associated with a bisexual identity, more severe CSA history, more lifetime sexual partners, and higher alcohol severity scores. Compared to lesbians, bisexual

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or intersexed content for nursing curricula.

There has been limited identification of core lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or intersexed (LGBTI) experience concepts that should be included in the nursing curricula. This article addresses the gap in the literature. To move nursing toward the goals of health equity and cultural humility in practice, education, and research, nursing curricula must integrate core LGBTI concepts, experiences, and needs related to health and illness. This article reviews LGBTI health care literature to address the attitudes, knowledge, and skills needed to address curricular gaps and provide content sug

Toward an affirmative lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender leadership paradigm.

This article presents an affirmative paradigm for understanding the leadership of sexual minorities-that is, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Although research on LGBT issues in leadership to date is almost nonexistent, there are several bodies of literature that can contribute to an understanding of the unique leadership challenges faced by sexual minority people. These include the literatures on stigma and marginalization, leadership in particular status groups (e.g., college students, women), and LGBT vocational issues (especially workplace climate and identity disclos

Perceived determinants of mental health for bisexual people: a qualitative examination.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the determinants of mental health, as perceived by bisexual people, in order to begin understanding the disparities in the rates of mental health problems reported by bisexual people versus those reported by heterosexual people, and, in many studies, gay men and lesbians. METHODS: Our community-based participatory action research project comprised focus groups and semistructured interviews with 55 bisexual people across the province of Ontario, Canada. RESULTS: Perceived determinants of emotional well-being identified by participants could be classified as macrolevel

Pregnancy loss in lesbian and bisexual women: an online survey of experiences.

BACKGROUND: Although pregnancy loss is a distressing health event for many women, research typically equates women's experiences of pregnancy loss to 'married heterosexual women's experiences of pregnancy loss'. The objective of this study was to explore lesbian and bisexual women's experiences of miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death. METHODS: This study analysed predominantly qualitative online survey data from 60 non-heterosexual, mostly lesbian, women from the UK, USA, Canada and Australia. All but one of the pregnancies was planned. Most respondents had physically experienced one ea

Health care use among gay, lesbian and bisexual Canadians.

OBJECTIVE: This article examines whether consultations with health care providers, not having a regular doctor, unmet health care needs, and receipt of preventive screening tests vary by sexual identity for Canadians aged 18 to 59. DATA SOURCE: Results are based on the Canadian Community Health Survey, combined 2003 and 2005 data. ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES: Cross-tabulations were used to compare utilization rates of selected health care providers by sexual identity. Multiple logistic regression models that controlled for predisposing, enabling and health need variables were employed to ascertain

Risk among young gay and bisexual men living with HIV.

The influence of sexual orientation was examined on sexual risk behaviors, disclosure patterns, substance use, and stressful live events among 231 gay and bisexual youth living with HIV. Youth were mainly of ethnic minority heritage: 69.3% were Hispanic, African American, or biracial. Although there were significant differences in gay and bisexual youth's self-label and patterns of sexual attraction and sexual partners, there were few differences in other behavioral risk acts. The frequency of sexual risk acts, substance use, stressful life events, and child sexual abuse were similar for gay a

Homosexual and bisexual identity in sex-reassigned female-to-male transsexuals.

Descriptions of female-to-male transsexuals who are sexually attracted to men are rare. This is a report on nine of them. Their awareness of gender dysphoria preceded their awareness of their attraction to men. Their wish to undergo sex reassignment as a means of resolving their gender dysphoria superseded any concerns about their sexual orientation or sexual adaptation after surgery. Several had had sexual relationships with men before sex reassignment which were unsatisfactory because these men viewed our subjects as women. After sex reassignment, the subjects successfully established sexual

Predictors of high risk sexual behaviour in gay and bisexual men.

Evidence of high risk sex between gay men continues to be reported, as does a range of sexual behaviour. Three hundred and sixty-nine homosexually active men from different areas of England were each assessed twice at an an interval of 9 months in order to examine the extent to which a number of social-psychological factors predicted subsequent high risk sexual behaviour. Few of the variables were significantly related to unprotected receptive anal sex in the way that the Health Belief Model predicted, except for some perceptions of costs and benefits of safer sex. However, whether or not men

AIDS in bisexual men in the United States: epidemiology and transmission to women.

BACKGROUND: Homosexual and bisexual men with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) differ, and bisexual men play an important role in the sexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to women. METHODS: To describe AIDS in these groups, we examined AIDS cases reported nationally through June 1990. RESULTS: Among 65 389 men who reported having had sex with men since 1977, 26% were bisexual. More Black (41%) and Hispanic men (31%) than White men (21%) reported bisexual behavior. Bisexual men were twice as likely to report intravenous drug use (20%) as were homosexual men (9%),

Disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma not associated with HIV infection in a bisexual man.

We report a 42-year-old white bisexual man with disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma limited to the skin and gastrointestinal tract. Results of several serum tests for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibodies have been negative. The CD4/CD8 ratio has remained normal, and his Kaposi's sarcoma has had a benign clinical course during 30 months of follow-up. Similar reports of disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma with a benign clinical course in homosexual or bisexual men without demonstrable HIV infection are reviewed. Some cellular immune impairment that might be more prevalent in the homosexual populati

Sexually transmitted diseases in hetero-, homo- and bisexual males in Copenhagen.

This study is a mapping of intestinal protozoal and pathogenic bacterial infections, and sexually transmitted urethral and anorectal infections among 365 consecutive male patients attending a veneric disease (VD) clinic in Copenhagen. The profile of diseases was strongly correlated to sexual life-style. Amoebiasis and giardiasis were found respectively in 31.9% and 13.8% of homosexuals. None of the heterosexuals had pathogenic protozoa. Protozoal infections were correlated to anilingus. Forty-five percent of the patients were infected in Denmark. Travelling to endemic areas was of no obvious i

HIV stigma by association among Australian gay and bisexual men.

OBJECTIVE: The negative effects of HIV stigma may extend beyond those who are HIV-positive, to people who are perceived to be at risk of HIV. This article examines HIV stigma by association among Australian gay and bisexual men (GBM). DESIGN: Cross-sectional, online survey of 1280 Australian gay and bisexual men. This article focuses on HIV stigma from within a larger study that investigated stigma related to sexual identity. METHODS: Bivariate and multivariable comparisons were made between men who experienced HIV stigma by association and those who did not. A serial mediation model was tes
