BACKGROUND: Bison (Bison bison) and cattle (Bos taurus) are closely related (can interbreed) and they also share many parasites. Cattle are commonly infected with one or more of the eight named Sarcocystis species: Sarcocystis hirsuta, S. cruzi, S. hominis, S. bovifelis, S. heydorni, S. bovini, S. sigmoideus and S. rommeli. Among these, the full life-cycle is known only for S. cruzi. Sarcocystis cruzi (transmitted via canids) is recognized as the most pathogenic Sarcocystis species, causing abortion, low milk yield and poor body growth. It has been experimentally cross-transmitted from cattle

An outbreak of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) among bison sold at an auction market was studied for an 18-month period. Forty-five of 163 bison submitted for sale from 8 different bison farms died on 7 other destination farms. The outbreak began on day 50 after the sale, peaked between days 60 and 70, and ended on day 220. Twenty-one dead bison were confirmed to be MCF cases by clinical histories, pathology, and detection of ovine herpesvirus-2 DNA in their tissues with polymerase chain reaction assays. Twenty-four dead bison were classified as suspect MCF cases from clinical histories. No ca

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) in gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) is an emerging concern in grazing livestock, including the North American bison (Bison bison). Nevertheless, little is known about routine parasite control practices in ranched bison herds. This cross-sectional survey of bison producers in 22 states across the southern and central United States characterized herd demographics, pasture management, nutrition, animal sourcing, and anthelmintic use. Seventy-nine producers from 15 states responded, most managing herds on fewer than 300 acres. Parasite control was predominantly drug-ce

Babesia spp. are tick-borne haemoparasites that infect a wide range of domestic and wild mammals. Free-ranging ungulates are considered to be important reservoir hosts of Babesia parasites. The European bison (Bison bonasus) is a large and rare ungulate species, reintroduced into the forests of Central Europe after an absence of several decades. Owing to their protected status, studies of tick-borne pathogens in European bison have so far been rare and fragmented. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Babesia infection in free-ranging and captive herds of European bison and

Fracture of the digits is a well-known orthopedic condition in adult cattle, and mainly the distal phalanx (P3) is involved. To our knowledge, the treatment of fractures of the middle (P2) and proximal (P1) phalanges with orthopedic claw blocks has not yet been described in cattle and other ruminants. This report describes the first case of the successful management of a P1 fracture in an adult European bison. A 5-year-old female European bison (Bison bonasus) presented with severe weight bearing lameness of the left hind limb and a marked soft tissue swelling accentuated over the plantar and

American bison (Bison bison) are particularly susceptible to developing fatal sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF) caused by ovine herpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2), a γ-herpesvirus in the Macavirus genus. This generally fatal disease is characterized by lymphoproliferation, vasculitis, and mucosal ulceration in American bison, domestic cattle (Bos taurus), and other clinically susceptible species which are considered non-adapted, dead-end hosts. The pathogenesis and cellular tropism of OvHV-2 infection have not been fully defined. An earlier study detected OvHV-2 open reading frame 25 (OR

From August 1993 to June 1994, 3 month-old bison (Bison bison) were vaccinated with Brucella abortus strain RB51 (SRB51, n = 6), strain 19 (S19, n = 3), or with saline (n = 1) and serologic responses and persistence of vaccine strains within lymph nodes were monitored. Bison vaccinated with S19 had granulomatous lymphadenitis and greater peak numbers of B. abortus than those vaccinated with SRB51. Bison vaccinated with RB51 had similar histological lesions and B. abortus were still present in lymph nodes at 16 weeks. Although antibodies against RB51 were produced, standard tube agglutination t

BACKGROUND: Our recent macro- and scanning electron microscopic study of tongue conducted on domesticated cattle, wild living European bison, and Bison bonasus hybrid revealed various spatial arrangement and number of gustatory and mechanical papillae between parental species and their hybrid. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy analysis of gustatory papillae indicated the variable distribution of fungiform papillae (Fu) over the surface of the tongue, which could be significant in differentiated taste perception during feeding in studied wild living and domesticated husbandry ruminants.

Q fever is an important zoonosis caused by the intracellular Gram-negative bacteria Coxiella burnetii. The source of infection are numerous species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, as well as ticks. The disease is widespread throughout Europe, but the role of wildlife in its epidemiology is poorly understood. The European bison (Bison bonasus) population has been growing European-wide quite dynamically over the last few years. The aim of this study was to determine whether C. burnetii infection occurs in European bison and whether it can be considered an important bacterial reservoi

A newly-discovered foot disease of unknown origin in captive European Bison (Bison bonasus) was recently detected at Berne Animal Park. Dermatitis of the interdigital cleft of varying degrees of severity was diagnosed in all animals (n = 10). The aim of this study was to describe the gross and histological lesions of the interdigital cleft found in 10 captive European bison and to identify involved potential pathogens in affected feet using molecular-based methods for Treponema spp., Dichelobacter nodosus and Fusobacterium necrophorum. Lesions were scored according to the degree of gross patho

Since 1980 severe chronic balanoposthitis has been observed in free-living European bison (Bison bonasus) in the Białowieza Primeval Forest (Poland). Sera of 50 bison with balanoposthitis and 48 clinically healthy male and 49 female bison were investigated for antibodies against Mycoplasma bovis and M. bovigenitalium by western blot analysis. Prevalence of antibodies against M. bovigenitalium was significantly higher in bison with balanoposthitis than in unaffected male bison. Mycoplasma bovigenitalium may play a role in the pathogenesis of balanoposthitis in European bison.

OBJECTIVE: American bison (Bison bison) quarantine protocols were established to prevent transmission of brucellosis outside the Greater Yellowstone Area, while allowing for distribution of wild bison for conservation and cultural purposes. Quarantine standards require rigorous testing over 900 days which has led to the release of over 200 bison to Native American tribes. Standards were evaluated using 15 years of laboratory and management data to minimize the burden of testing and increase the number of brucellosis-free bison available for distribution.
ANIMALS: All bison (n = 578) from Yell

Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis), which causes bovine tuberculosis, is endemic in Canada's Wood Buffalo National Park and threatens the conservation of free-ranging bison. It also poses spillover risks to humans and livestock. Accurate diagnostic tools are critical for screening this threatened and culturally significant animal. Interferon gamma (IFNγ) release assays (IGRA) are commonly used for tuberculosis diagnosis in humans and other wildlife species. Hence, this study aimed to develop an IGRA-based approach for detecting M. bovis infection in bison. Animals from a tuberculosis-free captive

There is limited information about the pathogenesis and epidemiology of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in North American bison (Bison bison) or elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni). In these two experimental infection studies, we compared the susceptibilities of bison and elk to FMD virus (FMDV), respectively, with that of cattle; determined whether intra- and interspecies transmission could occur in bison and cattle, and elk and cattle; determined suitability of conventional available laboratory tests to detect FMDV infection in bison and elk; and investigated whether bison or elk are efficient long-te

Influenza A virus is a zoonotic pathogen capable of infecting a wide range of hosts, yet data on infections in wild ruminants are limited. The European bison (Bison bonasus), Europe’s largest terrestrial mammal, had not previously been identified as a host for Influenza A virus. This study aimed to provide the first molecular and serological evidence of H1N1 pandemic influenza A virus (A/H1N1pdm) infection in European bison, contributing to the understanding of Influenza A virus ecology at the wildlife–livestock interface. We retrospectively analysed 335 serum samples collected from European b

Based on recent literature dealing with the role of oestrogens in the male gonad, attempts were undertaken to reveal the site of aromatization within the testis of the European bison (Bison bonasus). Testes were collected from culled animals living in free-ranging populations in Bialowieza Forest, Poland (nine males aged 8 months to 10 years). Moreover, to check for any alterations in the expression of testicular aromatase between American bison (Bison bison) and European bison, testes from one adult 10-year-old individual were also chosen for this study. For immunohistochemistry, 4% formaldeh

Samples of oesophagus, diaphragm and heart muscles were taken from one European bison from Białowieza Forest during seasonal European bison elimination in 2008. Five gram of each muscle was examined by staining small samples in 0.2% aqueous solution of methylene blue. After that they were placed between compressor glasses and examined under a dissecting microscope in order to detect Sarcocystis sp. infection. All sarcocysts observed were counted. The 5-g sample of the heart muscle yielded a total of 756 sarcocysts while that of the diaphragm contained 107 of them and that of the oesophagus--89

Nematodes of the genus Thelazia (also referred to as eyeworms) pose a growing concern for wild and domestic ruminants. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, species composition, and associated ocular pathology of Thelazia infection in several European bison populations in Poland. The eyes of 223 European bison were examined over five years (2020–2024). Nematodes of the genus Thelazia were identified based on morphometrical and molecular analysis of the cox1 sequences. Epidemiological analysis of Thelazia infection in relation to age, sex, genetic line of European bison, as well as se
