Implant-associated osteomyelitis (IAOM) is a severe complication of the usage of orthopaedic implants. IAOM is difficult to treat and infection relapse is often due to insufficient treatment of bacterial persister cells. The electron spin resonance (ESR)-based photosafety test (ESR-PT) is a non-animal prediction test for photosafety evaluations that can be used even for hydrophobic chemicals; the method is based on the detection of singlet oxygen generation using ESR spectroscopy and showing high accuracy for compounds with known photosafety information. Studies relating to the treatment of human taeniasis in the Philippines using Atabrine, bithionol, and mebendazole are reviewed. Cure rates of 93.7% for Atabrine, 85%-100% for bithionol, and 84.62% for mebendazole are reported. Aside from these studies, recent experience in the treatment of Taenia saginata infections at the Department of Parasitology, College of Public Health, is also reported. Twenty patients referred to the department were treated, 3 with bithionol, 17 with praziquantel. Of the 17 patients treated with praziquantel, the study reported cure rates of 47-88.24%.

Treatment of Staphylococcus aureus infections is complicated by the development of antibiotic tolerance, a consequence of the ability of S. aureus to enter into a nongrowing, dormant state in which the organisms are referred to as persisters. A case of human fascioliasis is presented in which the patient remained symptomatic after treatment with praziquantel and other agents but eventually responded to bithionol. The difficulties in finding an efficacious and tolerable drug therapy for this condition are reviewed with reference to the life cycle and pathogenesis of the parasite. It is concluded that while bithionol remains the current drug of choice, triclabendazole may play a dominant role in the near future.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Fasciola hepatica is the cause of liver infection, fascioliasis. Although rare, it is still a problem even in developed countries. In this study, the clinical and computerized tomographic findings of 10 patients diagnosed with fascioliasis are summarized.

BACKGROUND: Veterinary antiparasitic drugs are widely used in countries and regions in which parasitic diseases are endemic, which leads to the risk of accidental ingestion and poisoning in humans. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old male patient with a history of cirrhosis sought medical attention on November 25, 2021, due to progressive vision loss. We report a case of hepatic fascioliasis. Fever and epigastric pain was the clinical presentation. We describe the features of the ultrasound and computed tomography examination. Symptoms were persistent after praziquantel treatment. Bithionol was effective and cured the patient.
