Infestation of the blue mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis by the copepod Pseudomyicola spinosus and its relation to size, density, and condition index of the host.

The copepod Pseudomyicola spinosus infests marine mussels and other commercial bivalve species. There is a lack of information on the infestation process and on its relationship to size, density, and health of the host. To obtain this information, an infestation study of the copepod in Mytilus galloprovincialis in field conditions was carried out. Results showed that the intensity of infestation is closely related to host size [F((2,810))=198.33; p<0.001], but not to density [F((2,810))=0.96; p<0.38]. After an initial colonization of the host by the infested copepodite stages, an equilibrium b

When size matters: the first comprehensive anatomical study of a species of "Condylocardiidae", an extremely miniaturized bivalve.

'Miniaturization' is a widespread phenomenon among the Metazoa. In the molluscan class Bivalvia, records of miniaturization are numerous. Among the Archiheterodonta, Warrana besnardi (Klappenbach, 1963) has attracted attention for its tiny size, which does not exceed 1.5 mm in shell length, and because it belongs to a group with limited anatomical information and often-debated status, the "Condylocardiidae" (which recent molecular studies place deeply nested within the family Carditidae). All species of Warrana Laseron, 1953 are small-bodied, and so miniaturization presumably occurred from a l

Thiosocius teredinicola gen. nov., sp. nov., a sulfur-oxidizing chemolithoautotrophic endosymbiont cultivated from the gills of the giant shipworm, Kuphus polythalamius.

A chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing, diazotrophic, facultatively heterotrophic, endosymbiotic bacterium, designated as strain 2141T, was isolated from the gills of the giant shipworm Kuphus polythalamius (Teredinidae: Bivalvia). Based on its 16S rRNA sequence, the endosymbiont falls within a clade that includes the as-yet-uncultivated thioautotrophic symbionts of a marine ciliate and hydrothermal vent gastropods, uncultivated marine sediment bacteria, and a free-living sulfur-oxidizing bacterium ODIII6, all of which belong to the Gammaproteobacteria. The endosymbiont is Gram-negative, rod

Evidence that blood flukes (Trematoda: Aporocotylidae) of chondrichthyans infect bivalves as intermediate hosts: indications of an ancient diversification of the Schistosomatoidea.

Blood flukes (Aporocotylidae) of actinopterygians (bony fishes) have been shown to infect freshwater gastropods and marine polychaetes as intermediate hosts. However, no life cycle is known for any aporocotylid of chondrichthyans (cartilaginous fishes) and no adult aporocotylid has been linked to a cercaria infecting a bivalve. Here we report two novel infections that fill these gaps. Cercariae consistent with the family Aporocotylidae were found developing in sporocysts in the gonad of the surf pipi, Donax deltoides Lamarck, 1818 (Bivalvia: Donacidae), from Stockton Beach, central New South W

Evaluation and forecasting of habitat suitability and thermal growth responses in the mud clam Geloina coaxans under climate change.

The mud clam (Geloina coaxans) is an ecologically important mangrove-associated bivalve. However, its sensitivity to climate warming and future growth responses remain insufficiently understood. By jointly analyzing habitat suitability predictions from an Ensemble Species Distribution Model (ESDM) with growth simulations from a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of the mud clam's thermal sensitivity and growth dynamics under climate change. The ESDM results indicated that suitable habitats are concentrated within Indo-Pacific mangrove regions, inc

Assessing Bivalves as Biomonitors of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Coastal Environments.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used chemicals that enter coastal ecosystems through various pathways. Despite the ecological and economic significance of coastal environments, monitoring efforts to identify PFAS in these regions are limited. Bivalves have been used as biomonitors for many pollutants, but their effectiveness in reflecting environmental PFAS contamination and the mechanisms of PFAS bioaccumulation is poorly understood. This study examined the impact of biological, chemical, and ecological variables on PFAS bioaccumulation in two bivalve species (i.e., East

Impact of habitat engineering by invasive Corbicula clams on native European unionid mussels.

Biological invasions cause biodiversity erosion on a global scale. Invasive species spreading beyond their natural range compete with native fauna for food and space, push native species to suboptimal habitats, impairing their behaviour and thus limiting their occurrence. Freshwater ecosystems are especially vulnerable to biological invasions and their ecological and economic impacts. The invasive Asian clams (Corbicula spp.), due to their opportunistic life style, can occur at densities of thousands ind. m-2. They act as ecosystem engineers transforming bottom substrata through accumulation o

Somatic evolution of marine transmissible leukemias in the common cockle, Cerastoderma edule.

Transmissible cancers are malignant cell lineages that spread clonally between individuals. Several such cancers, termed bivalve transmissible neoplasia (BTN), induce leukemia-like disease in marine bivalves. This is the case of BTN lineages affecting the common cockle, Cerastoderma edule, which inhabits the Atlantic coasts of Europe and northwest Africa. To investigate the evolution of cockle BTN, we collected 6,854 cockles, diagnosed 390 BTN tumors, generated a reference genome and assessed genomic variation across 61 tumors. Our analyses confirmed the existence of two BTN lineages with hemo

Pathology and infectious agents of unionid mussels: A primer for pathologists in disease surveillance and investigation of mortality events.

Freshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled groups of organisms in the world, and more than 30 species have gone extinct in the last century. While habitat alteration and destruction have contributed to the declines, the role of disease in mortality events is unclear. In an effort to involve veterinary pathologists in disease surveillance and the investigation of freshwater mussel mortality events, we provide information on the conservation status of unionids, sample collection and processing techniques, and unique and confounding anatomical and physiological differences. We review the pu

Macrofaunal Distribution, Diversity, and Its Ecological Interaction at the Cold Seep Site of Krishna-Godavari Basin, East Coast of India.

Cold seeps are characterized by typical endemic communities with associated microorganisms that depend on sulfide, methane, reduced nitrogenous compounds, and metals as electron donors for their survival through chemosynthesis. The discovery of an active cold seep site in January 2018 in the Krishna-Godavari (K-G) basin of Bay of Bengal was followed by a transit cruise in March 2018 to investigate the distribution and diversity of macrofauna. Further, the ambient sediment and pore water biochemistry were estimated to understand its relationship with macrofauna and the microbial associates of t

Gastropod first intermediate hosts for two species of Monorchiidae Odhner, 1911 (Trematoda): I can't believe it's not bivalves!

The trematode superfamily Monorchioidea comprises three families of teleost parasites: the Monorchiidae Odhner, 1911, Lissorchiidae Magath, 1917, and Deropristidae Cable & Hunninen, 1942. All presently known lissorchiid and deropristid life cycles have gastropods as first intermediate hosts, whereas those of monorchiids involve bivalves. Here, we report an unexpected intermediate host for monorchiids; two species of Hurleytrematoides Yamaguti, 1954 use gastropods as first intermediate hosts. Sporocysts and cercariae were found infecting two species of the family Vermetidae, highly specialised

Cytotoxic effect of palytoxin on mussel.

Palytoxin is a large and complex polyhydroxylated molecule with potent neurotoxic activity. Dinoflagellates from the Ostreopsis genera were demonstrated to be producers of this compound and analogues. Even though initially palytoxin appearance was restricted to tropical areas, the recent occurrence of Ostreopsis outbreaks in Mediterranean Sea point to a worldwide dissemination probably related to climatic change. Those dinoflagellates can bioaccumulate in shellfish, especially in filter-feeding mollusks and have been involved in damaging effects in seafood or human toxic outbreaks. The present

Effects of mussel-inspired compounds on dentin bonding: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Resin-based materials used in the treatment of dental caries face insufficient bonding durability at the dentin interface. Mussel-inspired compounds, as a novel class of bio-inspired materials, offer promising potential for enhancing dentin bonding performance. This meta-analysis assessed the efficacy of monomeric and polymeric mussel-inspired compounds on resin-dentin bond strength and/or anti-enzymatic effects. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42025649875). Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search covered PubMed, Web of Sci

Seasonal transcriptomic shifts reveal metabolic flexibility of chemosynthetic symbionts in an upwelling region.

Upwelling in the Tropical Eastern Pacific profoundly affects marine coastal ecosystems by driving drastic seasonal changes in water temperature, oxygen levels, and nutrient availability. These conditions serve as a natural experiment that provides a unique opportunity to study how marine animals and their associated microorganisms respond in the face of environmental change. Lucinid bivalves host chemosynthetic Candidatus Thiodiazotropha symbionts equipped with diverse metabolic pathways for sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen use. However, how these symbionts employ their metabolic toolkit in a chan

Transcriptomic insights into vibrio-induced mortality in the clam Meretrix petechialis under high temperature.

In this study, we investigate the mortality of the clam Meretrix petechialis facing a vibrio challenge under different temperatures and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Our experiment distinctly revealed that clam mortality was predominantly observed under high temperature, highlighting the critical impact of thermal stress on clam susceptibility to infection. Using RNA-seq, we further compared the global transcriptional response to vibrio in clam gills between high and low temperatures. Compared to other groups, the differentially expressed genes in vibrio-challenged group at high tempera

Ingestion of paralytic shellfish toxins in a carnivorous gastropod (Chorus giganteus): effects on their elemental composition and reproductive traits.

The producer of paralytic shellfish toxin (PST), Alexandrium catenella, is one of the main generators of HABs in the coasts of Chile. Its presence produces ecological and economic damage, directly affecting filter-feeding organisms, and indirectly to other organism through the trophic chain. The objective of this research was to identify the effect of a toxic diet on the energetic and reproductive parameters of the carnivorous snail Chorus giganteus. Two groups of snails were used, one fed with toxic prey (bivalves fed with A. catenella), and the other fed with non-toxic prey. Both treatments

Parasites and their impact on thick-shelled river mussels Unio crassus from two populations in Luxembourg.

The thick-shelled river mussel Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788 is a species native to many European habitats, with declining populations. The impact of parasite communities on health status of this species is poorly understood. In this study, parasites of 30 U. crassus specimens from the Our and Sauer Rivers in Luxembourg were identified morphologically and, in some cases, using molecular genetic methods. The findings were correlated to selected parameters (total length, visceral weight, shell lesions, gonadal stage). The 2 populations did not differ in shell length, visceral weight, number of m
