Various medication therapies have been attempted to assist in detoxification and abstinence maintenance among cocaine users. The safety of these medications in this unique population has not been documented. Carbamazepine, an anticonvulsant being used with this population, is known to cause leukopenia and agranulocytosis in seizure patients. Analysis of data involving two different populations of cocaine users treated with carbamazepine revealed no statistically or clinically significant changes in total white blood cell count, or in any component white cell, using endpoint analysis, lowpoint

STUDY OBJECTIVES: There is a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and innate immunity is a potential pathophysiologic pathway. The objective of this study was to determine whether nocturnal hypoxemia is associated with circulating markers of innate immunity in OSA.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of an observational cohort from the multicentre, clinic-based, Canadian Sleep and Circadian Network. Oxygen desaturation index 4% (ODI4%) was used to diagnose and determine the severity of OSA. The percentage of time spent below SpO2 <90

BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that corticosteroids cause leukocytosis. Clinicians must decide whether a rise in white blood cell (WBC) count is due to steroids versus other processes like developing infection.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to measure the increase in white blood cell count after corticosteroid administration in hospitalized patients without malignancy, infection, or immune dysfunction.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study from 2017 to 2018 in a single large healthcare system. We analyzed the trajectory of WBC count stratified by steroid dose. The stud

Blood leukocyte counts (e.g., eosinophil count) are important biomarkers for the onset, classification, and exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The causal relationships between them are necessary for the development of COPD treatment strategy, but remain unclear. Here, we implement two-sample bi-directional univariable Mendelian Randomization (MR) and multivariable MR to investigate the causal relationships. Univariable MR find that elevated blood eosinophil count significantly increases the risk of COPD (odds ratio (OR) = 1.22, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.14-1.30

Point-of-care testing (POCT) of blood cell count (BCC) is an emerging approach that allows laypersons to identify and count whole blood cells through simple manipulation. To date, POCTs for BCC were mainly achieved by "stationary" images through blood smears or single-laity arranged cells in the microwell, making it difficult to obtain statistically sufficient numbers of cells. In this work, we present a fully integrated POCT device solely using "in-flow" imaging of 3 μL fingertip whole blood for improved identification and counting accuracy of BCC analysis. Cold agglutinin are erythrocyte antibodies which possess the property of agglutinating red blood cells at temperatures of below 37°C, this phenomenon is reversible after heating. This is usually immunoglobulin M (IgM) class. Their pathogenicity is much more related to their temperature range of activity than their title. As we report in this observation, cold hemagglutination makes it difficult to interpret certain immunological tests such as ABO Rh blood grouping or searching for irregular antibodies (SAI). The discovery of cold agglutinins can be fortuitous revealing itself by disturbances a

Background Fetal red blood cells (FRBC) in maternal blood are counted in rhesus-negative women to determine the amount of anti-D immunoglobulin to be administered in the case of a rhesus-positive fetus. In rhesus-positive pregnant women this is done in not always very well-defined indications including trauma, miscarriage, fetal death and diminished fetal movements. The aim of this study is to determine if the detection of FRBC is useful in rhesus-positive pregnant woman. This was done by assessing maternal and fetal characteristics that are more likely to give a positive test. Materials and m

This study was aimed at establishing the importance of routine monitoring of white blood cell counts in patients with Graves' disease receiving antithyroid drug treatment. In the 12-year period from 1975 to 1987, 15,398 patients with Graves' disease receiving treatment with antithyroid drugs were seen at our clinic. Of these, 55 (0.4%) were found to have agranulocytosis. Agranulocytosis was defined as a granulocyte count of 0.5 x 10(9)/L or less. In only 12 of the 55 patients was agranulocytosis detected after the occurrence of infection (symptomatic; classic agranulocytosis). The remaining 43

BACKGROUND: Red blood cell (RBC) transfusions are life-saving options for those who are unable to carry oxygen. Although administering a single RBC unit usually elicits a sufficient response, identifying the optimal transfusion trigger can be challenging because this variable remains unknown.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop a one-unit RBC Transfusion Requirement Scoring Model (1RTRSM), a predictive scoring system through studying the value of each CBC parameter and basic demographics of the patients.
METHODS: A five-year, retrospective study of patients requesting a single unit of RB

BACKGROUND: Sleep irregularity is predictive of poor health outcomes, and particularly those of cardiometabolic origins. The immune system is implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic diseases, however the relation between sleep regularity and immune cell profile is unclear.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-two healthy young adults (20 ± 2 years) completed 14 days of 24-h wrist actigraphy followed by a morning blood sample to evaluate circulating white blood cells (WBC) and subtypes (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes). Sleep regularity was operationalized as the standard deviation (SD)

Chronic kidney disease has a major impact on the quality of life and mortality, and affects nearly 10% of the global population, with 4.8% prevalence in Saudi Arabia, and the rates increase sharply with age. Despite advances in hemodialysis (HD) technology, several studies have demonstrated that it exposes patients to immune dysregulation, increasing vulnerability to infections and inflammation-related problems. This study aims to examine Complete Blood Count (CBC) alterations associated with HD, offering insight into hematological stability and immune cell dynamics that could refine patient m

INTRODUCTION: Post-resuscitation care of cardiac arrest patients may be complicated by systemic inflammation elicited in response to whole-body ischaemia-reperfusion injury. We assessed the association between early WBC with one-year mortality in a large, unselected population of cardiac arrest patients.
METHODS: We collected a retrospective multicentre cohort of ICU-treated CA patients from the Finnish national ICU registry. We used locally estimated scatterplot smoothing (LOESS) curve to assess the association between the most abnormal WBC of the first 24 h in the ICU with the likelihood of

The association between white blood cell (WBC) count and arterial stiffness in patients with hypertension is not well-documented. We aimed to examine the relationships of total WBC count with arterial stiffness and risk of macrovascular damage in hypertensive patients. A total of 631 hypertensive adults (mean age: 65.6 years) were included in the present study. Arterial stiffness was determined by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI). Macrovascular damage was defined as baPWV >1.8 m/s or ABI <.9. The dose-response associations were assessed by multivariate

OBJECTIVE: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming a global public health challenge. A convenient NAFLD indicator will greatly facilitate risk appraisal and prevention. As a readily available and inexpensive hematological index in routine clinical examinations, red blood cells (RBCs) are gaining increasing attention in many diseases, such as metabolic syndrome, but their association with NAFLD is unknown.
METHODS: This health management cohort study included 27,112 subjects (17,383 non-NAFLD and 9,729 NAFLD) with up to 5 years of follow-up (median 2.8 years). NAFLD was diagnosed

OBJECTIVES: Down syndrome (DS) is associated with multiple complications, including a high risk of leukemia and thyroid dysfunction. This clinical study aimed to examine the complete blood cell count in patients with DS without leukemia or transient abnormal myelopoiesis. We also aimed to evaluate the effect of thyroid dysfunction on hematological anomalies in DS.
METHODS: We analyzed the peripheral blood cell count in 23 pediatric patients with DS with and without thyroid dysfunction and in 17 pediatric patients without DS with thyroid dysfunction.
RESULTS: Patients with DS showed greater n

BACKGROUND: Elevated serum inflammatory marker levels are associated with a greater long-term risk of cardiovascular events. Because 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme-A reductase inhibitors (statins) may have an antiinflammatory action, it has been suggested that patients with elevated inflammatory marker levels may have a greater reduction in cardiovascular risk with statin treatment.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We evaluated the association between the white blood cell count (WBC) and coronary heart disease mortality during a mean follow-up of 6.0 years in the Long-Term Intervention With Pravasta

This retrospective study was aimed at revealing the incidence of normal white blood cell (WBC) count agranulocytosis in patients treated with antithyroid drugs (ATDs). From January 1975 to December 2001, 109 patients (0.35%) presented with ATD-induced agranulocytosis at our clinic. In 18 patients (16.5%), the WBC count exceeded 3.0 x 10(9)/L at the onset of agranulocytosis. Ten showed a downward trend in WBC count (3.0-3.9 x 10(9)/L) after the initiation of ATDs. Four had symptoms of infection. In the remaining 4 patients, routine WBC and granulocyte count monitoring detected an agranulocytosi

AIMS: To study relationships between nucleated red blood cell count (NRBC), persistence of NRBC count elevation and neonatal complications in growth restricted fetuses (IUGR).
METHODS: Observational study of IUGR neonates (birthweight < 10th percentile). NRBC's/100 WBC were ascertained in a peripheral blood sample. Subsequent daily samples were analyzed until NRBC's fell < 10/100 WBC. NRBC count and days of NRBC elevation were related to complications (respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), cir
